The Last Defenders

Well, yeah, but they could just keep those and redesign the rest. Let's not be hasty.

I wanna see a redesign of Dragon Fang. It sorta always just looked plain.

Dragonfang wasn't Nordic in origin.

If I 'member correctly. It was forged by some odd wizard long ago, and given to the Ancient One, who gave it to Strange, who gave it to her so she'd give back the Ebony Blade.

Never mind, then. I didn't know it had an origin in the comics, I just figured she always had it, like Odin's always had Gungnir.

I hope someone redesigns her costume so she doesn't look so much like a female Thor.

Tarene's costume is the female version of Thor's, in my opinion. I've always seen Valkyrie as having her own identity.

Eh. I never had a problem with it. Maybe it's the sword she uses.

I'm not talking about her as a character. But visually, it's pretty obvious that her design was inspired by Thor's. All they really did was replace a couple balls with a bigger belt, change her cape color, and steal her pants.

I know that. I'm just saying that I never thought of her as the female Thor. I've always seen as being definitively Valkyrie. Tarene is clearly the female counterpart to Thor. It's in her goddamn, ******ed ****ing name.

Yeah, I was just talking visually. Her costume screams "female Thor" to me more than Tarene's, even in spite of the hammer. Tarene's costume has a bit of its own identity, what with the big white stripe down the center. Thor's costume doesn't have much white.

I don't know, I guess we just see the costumes differently.

Yeah but Val's been around a lot longer than Thor Girl. And she talks (or used to) in the same stupid way Thor used to.

I still remember, "For Odin! For Asgard! Xavier shall be free!" from whatever issue of UXM that was when Thor punched a hole through Onslaught and freed Xavier.

So if they'd called this mini-series "New Defenders," you would've bought it?

Perhaps.

The point im making is; how do you do The Last Defenders story without the people who started The Defenders?

That's like doing the last Fantastic Four with Franklin, Crystal, Luke Cage, and She-Hulk instead of Reed and company.

It's not the "last" Defenders story. The name of the book could apply to the team's actual name, or it could apply to them being the last line of defense.

True, true. Im definitely looking forward to the soliscit.

Meh. If it doesnt have the founding members, then it's not really the Defenders, imo. :down

Pass.

You buy New Avengers right?

Haha, that made me chuckle.

I don't mind the fact that the founders don't seem to be included in this story. Nighthawk and Valkyrie aren't founders, but they've become important enough Defenders characters that I'd read a Defenders story if it just had them, just like I'd read an Avengers story even if it only had the likes of the Vision, Hercules, Wonder Man, and the Scarlet Witch (not crazified, natch).

Hopefully it'll have Valkyrie. It'll be interesting to see what she's like now.

Yeah. Accent on the "New".

Someone Tivo this.

Not really. The FF are a family; the Defenders are a bunch of people who usually have nothing to do with each other and often only come together because Dr. Strange coerces them somehow. Nighthawk, Valkyrie, and the "secondary" Defenders are more of a team, given that they're the ones who actually want to be there.

I'm not taking issue with your not reading it, mind. I just think you're drawing phantom distinctions here. Marvel's got a very long track record of separating new series from the classic series that previously bore their titles. This doesn't even look like it's doing that too much, given that Nighthawk's definitely there and he's a Defenders stalwart.
