I’ll just refer to the characters by the names of the actors portraying them because they go through a series of using different names with Patterson’s character having at least four different names and Dafoe having two.
- Patterson’s character is starting a 4 week contract as a lighthouse caretaker under the command of Dafoe’s character (Tom)
- Immediately upon his arrival to the island, Patterson’s character begins making himself comfortable in his sleeping quarters which he shares with Dafoe. He finds a mermaid figurine in the mattress presumably left by the old caretaker
- Within a few scenes, we begin seeing Patterson performing duties like basic upkeep of the home he’s staying in and changing the crapping pans he and Dafoe share—gross I know
- One night, after he’s done masterbating in a nearby shed, Patterson notices floating logs in the water and a body in the middle of it all. When he approaches it, he’s pulled under which is when we get a glimpse of a mermaid approaching him and quickly, he awakes from a dream
- As the film continues, there’s a seagull with one missing eye, that keeps bothering Patterson but Dafoe warns him not to mess with seagulls because they old the souls of dead sailors
- Periodically, during the night, Patterson notices Dafoe at the top of the lighthouse, naked, looking directly into the light he also notices him writing in a journal that he keeps locked inside a cabinet.
- Patterson asks Dafoe about what’s so special about the light, which Dafoe plays off. Patterson asks Dafoe about the previous lighthouse keeper which Dafoe states went insane and was convinced there was an enchantment in the light—something mystical if you will
- Dafoe drinks like a fish at night which he tries encouraging Patterson to engage in which he’s initially resistant to do but gives in
- Patterson continues to have hallucinations both at night and during the day—seems like it’s based more on sexual frustration and guilt than anything else but that’s left up to interpretation
- One day Patterson tries drinking water from the kitchen faucet which has mud that comes out, he goes to check the waterhole and notices a dead seagull inside. The same seagull with the missing eye, approaches him, and in a fit of rage, he grabs it by its neck and continues to smash it against the rock it was standing on top of (the scene is pretty graphic). After he kills it, there’s an immediate change in the wind.
- Dafoe notices the change in the wind and warns of an approaching storm
- Dafoe congratulates Patterson on making it through the four weeks and tells him the boat should be arriving tomorrow to pick him up, so for their final night, they should celebrate. They proceed to drink bottles of liquor and pass out.
- The next morning, as they wait for the boat, the rain is heavy and they realize the boat isn’t coming. Dafoe is calm telling Patterson it’ll come tomorrow but Patterson isn’t convinced.
- Dafoe figures out Patterson killed the seagull he warned him not to which is what brought down the storm and cursed them both to be stuck on the island
- Dafoe and Patterson run out of liquor so they proceed to start drinking the lighthouse fluid used to keep the light on—they add honey to make the taste easier to handle
- Patterson, trying to catch lobsters with a catcher cage/box, finds a head with a missing eye like the seagull in it. It’s left up to interpretation whether this is the old caretaker that Dafoe claims went mad or if this is simply a hallucination.
- As they continue drinking, Patterson tells Dafoe he wants to confess something but Dafoe tells him not to “spill his beans” but Patterson still does. Dafoe keeps asking Patterson why he spilt his beans in a fit of rage. The storm gets worst which results in the kitchen being destroyed.
- The next morning, Patterson finds the journal Dafoe has been writing in which we don’t get to see the contents of but he confronts Dafoe of being a fake parody who’s entire life has been a lie.
- Patterson tries to use a lifeboat to get off the island but Dafoe takes an axe to it and begins chasing him through the rain. Dafoe tries to flip the script and tell Patterson it was he who destroyed the boat and chased him with an axe. The two start fighting with Patterson getting the upper hand and telling Dafoe he’s his dog now. Dafoe, on all fours, follows Patterson on a leash where he takes him to a hole right outside the lighthouse. Dafoe jumps in and Patterson begins to bury him right before removing the lighthouse keys.
- Patterson gets back to the house and is attacked by Dafoe with an axe. Patterson manages to get the axe and kills Dafoe.
- Patterson goes to the top of the lighthouse and uses the keys to get to the very top where he can look directly into the light. Once he does, he begins laughing uncontrollably. He then falls down the stairs of the lighthouse, rolling on top of himself.
- The final shot is of Patterson on the beach, on top of some rocks, getting his intestines eating by seagulls
