Seems like he can change them from true Omega to lazers at his will. In Superman TAS we see Superman blasted by them repeatedly and was only slightly crispy, whereas Dan Turpin was hit by one Omega beam and disappeared altogether.

Still, you got the feeling in the show that Superman would be dead if he was hit too many times. The audience is meant to believe that Darkseid is about to blast him dead right before Supes grabbed his eyes and made the beams backfire into Darkseid's face.
