I might be interested in getting Planetary. Are the stories a lot bleaker than regular superhero comics? Like do people die left and right and its sort of dark and a mature comic. Whats the overall feel of it?

It's Warren Ellis...

It's not Avatar comics style gore and dread. But it's certainly not a typical hero book. Characters don't really die left and right but when they do it's pretty harsh. Especially once Snow gains his memories back.

I had the first two trades of Planetary and didn't really like them. The story didn't really flow and I wasn't connecting to the characters so I sold them on eBay.

I loved Planetary. It's like if several classic comic book characters and movies all happened in the Wildstorm Universe, but were covered up. The team of scientists that vaguely resembles the Fantastic Four? The island off the coast of Japan that was home to giant monsters? The armory full of stolen weapons that look like they came off of superheroes?

And here are our main characters, archeologists of the impossible.

I did like all that, but the story just didn't meld together for me.

Well then you fail at reading. :o

Planetary is, like, stepping aside and taking a look at the absolute awesomeness of living in such a world. What sums it up best is when they're on the Dinosaur Island, and a giant Rodan looking monster goes flying past and Elijah's like "I thought you said they'd died off?" And Jakita says, "I did. Isn't that great?"

It really is the kind of series that, takes a look at comics, Sci Fi, all that stuff as a whole and really gives you a sense of wonder about it. These amazing things that happened, and are happening, and the people who stumble upon them. It's got everything. A secret society of all the pulp action heroes. An evil Fantastic Four. John Woo Ghost Detectives in Hong Kong. It's just, awesome.

So the overall feel of the story is awesome, but is it upbeat? I know, not like Barney the Dinosaur, but what I mean is its not like Watchmen where its all doom and gloom and there is no light behind the clouds peaking through.
Is it like X-Statix where [BLACKOUT]they introduce the team, including a mutant hating mutant who kills two girls in his hot tub, and then that whole team dies in a gruesome massacre then a new team of X-Statix is introduced?[/BLACKOUT]
Do the bad guys win, the good guys win, bad guys get whats coming to them?
Or is it more like, um, Starman by James Robinson? maybe if someone compared it to something else I might get a feel.

Well, it seems like the story kinda picks up in the middle. If anything, the bad guys winning already happened, but then things start to go the good guys way with the very first issue. So, yeah, I suppose it's kinda up beat.

I can't compare it to any other story though. I tend to compare other stories to Planetary. It's a mystery at first. That's the best I can describe it.

Last Spring, along with Donna Troy, Dick and a couple other chumps no one cares about.

so, it was more of a merging of teen titans, and JL, not just Cyborg himself joining...?

I've just noticed that he's in that new picture that keeps getting post arounded

Dick and Donna were in the JLA because Bruce and Diana weren't available. Superman was also replaced by his adopted brother Mon-El for a while. It wasn't really a Titans/JLA merge, so much as certain Titans also function as substitutes for JLA members. And Cyborg also happened to be there.

That image comes from an upcoming reboot. They'll likely come up with a different reason for Cyborg to be there, but it'll likely boil down to "Cyborg is there because someone in charge really likes Cyborg."

Or they needed a black dude to round the team out.

Also, as this now stands, he is a founder. Taking J'onn's place.

J'onn is a Stormwatch character now.

*projectile vomits*

I'd be okay with it if he didn't look so stupid.

No I wouldn't

when did, Cyborg, become a member of the JL...?
I keep being deaf and blind to this. There are thousand of reasons for someone ELSE to be in the League instead of Cyborg! Black Canary, or Zatanna, or well .. obviously ... J'on J'onz
Like Corp sumed up perfectly: F***ed. Up.
I'm not one to complain a lot or about everything, but this goes far beyond my understanding. I don't get it. I can not understand how they can keep saying "we thought this really through" and end up with useless-boring-not-a-big-shot Cyborg in the League.

What does that mean for the Titans? Did Cyborg get downgraded at one point? Or did Dick's Titans just never exist?

I'm starting to wonder if the old school Titans ever existed. I mean, there's no word on Tempest, Donna, Changeling, Raven, or Deathstroke's kids in the new DCU. The upcoming Teen Titans book has Cassie, Tim, Bart, and Conner meeting for the first time, so god knows if there's any sort of Teen Titan legacy linking them together.

Even if they did, you couldn't get all their history crammed into 5 years.

Planetary is awesome and isn't bleak. If you read it all you will find it one of the best comics you will ever read.
