I honestly don't attribute XIII-2 and Lightening Returns can be attributed to XIII so much. For instance, X-2, if I recall, was not as big a seller as X. There's just not as much anticipation for spin-offs than main titles. If XIII had truly killed the franchise, no would give a **** about FFXV, but they do, and they did even when it was Versus XIII. Plus, while not selling as well as the main XIII, did either of those entires really sell poorly?
.
IDA as X-2 did sell incredibly well. FFX sold 8 million and FF X-2 did 5.3. Remember this is only on one console. FF XIII did about 7.2M, XIII-2 did 3.2M and LR less than a million. That's a pretty significant drop off and those spinoffs had the benefit of being on two consoles. We'll have to wait and see the NA numbers this month but X/X-2 HD Remaster sold better than LR did in Japan.

Well, I don't know if using Star Wars is very applicable. It's become more than just a franchise and this point and evolved into it's own little subculture. But really, it's impossible to say that for sure. It also assumes that there was a more universal reaction to the installment in question, and I'm somewhat skeptic of being the case here.

It did better than I remember then, but still, decent drop off (almost 3 mil). Not too far off from the 4 mil drop from XIII to XIII-2, which I think shows my point more than anything.

The FFX/2 HD is one of the reasons I'm looking to get a PS3. I also want to get MGS4 just to finish off the series I spent so much time watching and the Deadly Premonition HD just because I love that game so freaking much.

Oh maybe. It holds across many film franchises anyway though where the 1st crap film in a successful franchise only really has a box office impact on the subsequent instalment. The crap one itself normally does fine on the back of its predecessors. Avengers 2 is going to make over $1B even if I make it. But Avengers 3 will then feel the results of my input. :woot:

I believe once you have a great film followed by a great sequel you have a potentially long term fanbase and they will often be willing to return and forgive (crap 3rd or 4th films) en masse as soon as it looks like the product has the quality back (eg Batman). And probably more so for games. I consider myself now a long term fan of Gears of War and Mass Effect and even though Gears: Judgment was a crap entry I will be just as excited for the next Gears game and that process will repeat every time I get a new crap game until I get a ....non-crap game. :D

Well, I guess the same can apply to FF, too, but the situation is a different one with the nature of the series. Every installment (as in main numbered installment) is different. Which makes the "lackluster" response to XIII even less damaging, since it's guaranteed that the next one will be different (and in this case, radically different, since XV started off as a spin-off).

so to clarify, if I buy the retail version of FFXIV, that comes with a free 30 day subscription?

The US sales numbers have been released and FF X/X-2 HD did 260k across PS3 and Vita in its first month. Thats up from Lightning Returns which did 164K on the PS3/360 in its first month

Square Enix Is Bringing Final Fantasy III To PC. April 18, 2014 . 1:01am

While Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII already had PC ports, Final Fantasy III for PC is a new version of the game.

Before the Nintendo DS remake, Final Fantasy III was the least accessible game in the series since it was only available for Famicom in Japan. Now Luneth, the silvered haired Final Fantasy III protagonist is everywhere. Square Enix brought Final Fantasy III to DS, iOS (pictured), Android, PSP, and Ouya.

Next, Final Fantasy III is coming to PC. A rating by Germany’s USK board leaked the news.

While Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII already had PC ports, Final Fantasy III for PC is a new version of the game. That’s interesting to see and perhaps Square Enix is considering to bring even more Final Fantasy games to PC.

If anyone here could confirm something for me, I'd greatly appreciate it:

Can someone playing FF14 on a PS3 play along with someone playing it on a PS4?

I have both systems and I'd like to co-op this game with my wife (I'd let her use the PS4, of course, because chivalry is not dead!) without having to buy another PS4.

Final Fantasy III is probably one of my least favorites.

so are there any good online beginner's tutorials for playing FFXIV?

I've never played an MMORPG before or whatever it's called, but I'm strongly considering giving this a try.

Yes, it's cross platform across all platforms.

I always felt like some people are underplaying Square's struggles in recent time. Not just their debacle with their Final Fantasy MMO, which was the catalyst that kinda stalled FF 15 and perhaps Kingdom Hearts, but their lack of new IPs, or even making console sequels to some of their classic games. They seem stagnant..just like the rest of the Japanese market, with Nintendo being on the forefront.

There's a tutorial in the beginning of the game. The game feels very streamlined compared to other MMOs I've played. You shouldn't have too much trouble with it.

are they? SE seems to be universally looked down upon in recent years for the reasons you stated. I dont think people are underplaying it as it seems SE rightfully gets ragged on

ah, thanks!

It just seems like the entire Japanese industry is struggling, besides the portable market.

Even Konami has..what..Metal Gear..and what else? Castlevania? How often do they have new IPs or titles anymore? Thank God Square owns Eidos so they can generate $$$$

I'll have to agree with Havok here. I'm not sure why you feel anyone is underplaying that, it's been a very discussed topic. There's nothing controversial about saying Square or any of the Japanese companies had a big decline this generation, it's pretty much a universal consensus.

And they did launch a lot of new IPs, they're just mostly ****** mobile games.
