Ant-Man The Official Ant-Man News and Speculation Thread - Part 1

Feige outright said O'Grady isn't in this.

playing devil's advocate, that twitter post didn't necessarily suggest that Eric would be in it. it said that you should read Irredeemable Ant-Man. maybe it's because of Pym, in that story, created an Ant-Man suit specifically for SHIELD to use in their spying. and then it was stolen from that SHIELD lab. so maybe others were right in thinking that movie Pym already works for SHIELD. and Lang or whomever steals that suit from SHIELD. that's a lot of mismashing of ant-man stories, though.

Eh... that seems really roundabout.

Also, Robert Kirkman said this during his panel at Image Expo:
That led to the question, "So the 'Ant-Man' movie isn't going to be based on yours?" "I wish, but I don't think so," Kirkman answers, adding that he's heard the movie Ant-Man will be Scott Lang.

Now the most important question: did he hear this through people in the industry or just on the internet?

all Kirkman said was that he wished that they would have based the Ant-Man movie on his book (translation: using Eric) and that Scott Lang might be ant-man, in it. all that means is that Eric O'Grady, likely, won't be in it. that doesn't mean they couldn't have transplanted Scott Lang into Eric's story; stealing the ant-man suit from a SHIELD facility instead of non-shield-related private lab of Pyms. there's really no easier way to establish this as set in the MCU than to involve SHIELD. only Eric's origin story involves SHIELD. but, like I said, I'm only playing along with the unconfirmed rumor.

I don't really know what the debate is about which of them is in the movie Ant-Man when Edgar said himself Lang and Pym are Ant-Man with Pym passing the mantle onto Lang.

I think Lang is almost certainly the lead with Pym the secondary lead.

Unless the script has gone through a major rewrite which by Feige and Wrights own account it hasn't then Lang and Pym are still the ones we will be seeing wear the Ant-man suit.

the "debate" exists mainly because we've only seen one casting.

Considering Paul Rudd is playing the character, it wouldn't surprise me if parts of Irredeemable Ant-Man inform and inspire this particular version of Scott Lang.

Basically, he will start out as O'Grady did before being inspired to become a better person and using his powers for good.

Maybe he'll use the suit to spy on naked women in the shower.

I would bet that if Rudd is indeed playing Lang, then when (not if, but when) they have finally have Pym in serious action(not just passing a mantle), he will be Giant-man.

i hope so. because, personally, i don't want to see Lang as Giant-Man. just not a fan of that particular identity; although it works great for Hank.

Which name/identity do you guys prefer Giant-Man or Goliath?

Giant-Man is one of those terrible Silver Age names, but if Wright chooses to use Ant-Man as an actual title without being tongue in cheek, odds are he can/will make Giant-Man work, too. Might be easier to just call him Dr. Pym and be done with it.

IF Rudd is playing Lang, then I have doubts Pym will ever be a significant part of the MCU, much less an Avenger.
Unless the guy who ends up playing him is an equally awesome casting...

I see Pym in the MCU, and I also eventually see Wasp. I also don't see Janet/Wasp playing off of Lang alone.

I honestly always liked "Goliath" better as "Giant-man" seems hokey to me, but since he's calling himself Giant-man in the comics now, I figure they might choose Giant-man for any movie.

But seriously, Goliath to me sounds SOOOOO much better.

I've always wonder why Giant-Man and not just "Giant".

I don't think it would ever come to that. but I still think it's a mistake to treat this as if we're talking about comic book characters. of course "Janet" could play off of "Lang" alone. why would they hire an actress who couldn't? the writer would give them chemistry, if it came down to that. and, in the books, Hank and Jan were mismatched. it was part of their story. he was a stuffy scientist. she was a adventurous socialite. there's just as big of a difference between Hank and Jan as Scott and Jan. if we're just talking comics, scott's personality is far more compatible with Jan's; than Hank's. she's a daddy's girl. he's a daddy.

disclaimer: I am no way advocating a Jan/Scott teamup.

Because then everyone would be all "Giant what? Giant Alpaca? I'm so confused."

they could throw 'The' in front of it; The Giant. kind of like how Ben Grimm is The Thing. but I still prefer Giant-Man. if it sounds old fashioned, it's on purpose. Pym is a throwback to Tales to Astonish. Giant-Man is iconic sounding; by comic book standards. and Goliath sounds like a name that a villain would use. David was the hero of the story, afterall.

I hear what you are saying, I know they can and have made deviations, I just personally doubt they are going to deviate that much re:Pym and Jan. I also feel for some strange reason we will one day see a Giant-Man/Goliath and that will not be Lang.

As it is one day we will see, or not.

I would hope so. if Wright wants to play this smart, he'll include all 3 characters; so Whedon can do whatever he likes with Hank and Jan.

I agree exactly. I also think it's smarter to do it that way, less messy and less "clutter".
