I love Marvel's casting. Outstanding for thinking outside the box. Even if it doesn't completely work (which I doubt) kudos for bringing something different to the superhero cinematic table.

Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas in one film...just thinking about it makes me feel more excited about it than ever.

I'm pretty mixed on this casting but like you said Douglas and Paul Rudd is a great combo and has good potential. But I feel a tad bit disappointed with the direction they are taking with Pym.

Now just thinking about Rudd/RDJ/Ruffalo/DOUGLAS riffing off each other and going completely freakballs over it!

I'm completely down for this idea of Hank being the original, older Antman and Lang being the young, modern version. The big ? now is what about Janet?

This is how I feel also - while Douglas is a fantastic actor and I'm looking forward to seeing Wright's vision for Ant-Man, I can't help but be a little disappointed that we won't see Pym's journey through his different superhero personalities.

And also, I think this is ultimately one of the few negatives of the MCU shared universe. Fans were hoping that we'd see these characters grow over multiple films and across properties, but the Pym character seems more and more to be a one-off for Marvel at this point.

I'll still be seeing the movie though, since I'm a sucker for Marvel's films and I've been entertained by everything they've produced since Iron Man so I'm on board with this one too.

I've read some conflicting reports.

Is it that he's not and never was Ant-Man, is older than Pym from the comics, doesn't look like him from the comics and is a villain????

Others get copious amounts of **** for bringing something different

The problem is that this film was clearly never intended to be a part of the MCU, but since it became so successful Marvel wouldn't want to make something outside of that, and of course Edgar wouldn't want to change his script to accommodate this considering how big a Lang fan he is.

Were this a standalone film I'd be completely fine with the casting of an older actor as Hank - but for the MCU as a whole, considering Hank is now permanently older than the main heroes by 20+ years? Not a fan.

From 2006:

Remember reading this a looong time ago. I was afraid at one point that Marvel would make him change everything once the MCU launched successfully, but I'm really glad they didn't stifle his creative vision. Frankly, we're lucky a talented director like Wright has any interest in doing a movie for the character, let alone actively want to make it. Some fans have said if he didn't want to do a traditional Pym story Marvel should fire him and get another director. What a horrendous mistake that've been.

I really like that they're not thinking inside the box in terms of a tentpole movie here and doing something different with the traditional origin story. Color me stoked as usual. Between all the things I've seen for CA:TWS, GOTG, A:AOU, and this I have high hopes that Marvel will be batting a thousand these next two years.

so douglas and bill paxton become part of the MCU on the same day.. awesome news

Which others? What do you mean?

I'm down for this. The rumor is

Michael Douglas is really the villain so maybe Hank Pym starts out a good guy and gets corrupted? We haven't heard rumours about who the villain is yet after all.

I'm excited for this take since I've accepted that Marvel is embracing the idea of doing things differently than the comics.

This is how i am with the runoured cast and ages of the characters for F4 Reborn but am in the minority. Did doing things differently than the comics become okay overnight?

Which others? What do you mean?

Other studios. They do things different than the comics and people react with furious anger and hate.

Let's hope Nova Prime and Hank Pym never cross paths. Blood will be spilt.

That's the thing, for me. Other studios don't do bold things with the superhero genre. Ben Affleck as Batman? Ok, may be surprising giving the current status of him (becoming a very good director) but he was already a superhero, so no big news there.
But Robert Redford joining a spy-thriller superhero? That's different. We are over-saturated with superhero movies, so I think is a very good thing that we are getting outside-the-box casting.

First Class was bold, they took the character back to the 60's for a story set amongst the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Days of Future Past is the first superhero movie (other than Superman swirling the planet backwards ) to use time travel.

The Wolverine is the only superhero movie to be set almost entirely (90%) abroad with a non-caucasian cast.

Sony is planning to bring together a team of villains to battle the hero, kindof a reverse Avengers.

I was very very iffy on the Russos being hired to direct CA:TWS, my most anticipated CBM this year, until the pics and footage rolled out. Now excitement's in full on FANGIRLGASM mode.

But I base my excitement on Marvel projects on certain specific factors: how much work of the creative team do I like? What about the actors? What are they saying about the project in interviews?

While I would've rathered a female-superhero or a Black Panther movie first instead of Ant-Man, Edgar Wright being attached to the project with Joe Cornish caught my interest. Then the casting started and my excitement for this has been building in rapid, crazy pace. It is all so very intriguing how Marvel's going on about their movies - it is bold and out-of-the-box. Say what you will about Fox, but they gave us McKellan and Stewart as legit CBM characters. And now Michael Douglas is going to be freakin' Hank Pym! That's huge for a character most held in derision before, and a character who's not so well known outside the genre.

Michael. Douglas.

Yeah, mind blown.

So are we gonna get an Ant-Man vs Ant-Man battle in the film? The concept of that is just mouth-watering, growing big and shrinking admist battle. This could be glorious.:D

Can't have that. Michael might break his hip.
He might fall, and wont be able to get up.

Yes, I was going to mention First Class too. They took an unlikely approach to casting, and it really paid off.

The Sinister Six too, I mean, I have praised that in the Spidey's boards, but in here I was basically talking about casting. Marvel -under Feige- made some very interesting choices even from the very start of the MCU. I've been pleaseantly surprised so far.

I would say based on the Marvel Studios track record (Iron Man vs Iron Monger, Hulk vs Abomination, Cap vs Red Skull) where the hero and villain have similar powers, the answer is YES.

But this could be really something special though. It could be the most visually and creative fight scenes and even top Thor's teleportation battle with Malekith.:D
