As much as we'd love to see McQueen direct a Black Panther movie, I think he's a little too high brow for that, even if Chiwetel Ejiofor stars. Plus, I don't think he will dig Feige's micromanaging. Alan Taylor didn't.

Yeah, well working with a massive studio does have that come with the territory. Nolan got lucky and managed to get a massive amount of pull and tenure.

Fun fact about McQueen, he is real good friends with Malcolm D. Lee of Undercover Brother/Best Man fame.

And McQueen knows he would never get half the pull that Nolan has. But hey, in some parallel universe, there's a McQueen directed Black Panther movie and it's probably awesome.

That's no surprise...John Ridley...who wrote the screenplay for 12 years a slave also wrote the screen play for Undercover Brother.

That's pretty sweet. I'm sure there is a fraternity of black directors that meet up once in a while. McQueen, Malcolm D. Lee, Spike Lee, Fuqua, Singleton, etc. They probably get together and watch the game.

:o

Fanboys always come back to Tim Story when it comes to superhero flicks. Always. I think right now the only thing they'd be down wiht is McQueen directing Black Panther.

I don't care what color a director is as long as he does a good job. I agree that the FF movie's problems stem far from the director but he still has to take some of the responsibility.

Except only one guy in the group calls it American Football. :oldrazz:

Oh yeah, Story gets his fair share of blame. Studio intervention can only be so much of an excuse if you get two shots at directing.

I would like to see old boy that directed Rise of the Guardians get a shot at something else. I had no idea he was black until I saw a picture of him.

Forest Whitaker directed Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jr 90's Romantic Comedy Hope Floats.
Steve McQueen - Shame.

It will break your heart and f*** your mind
Steve McQueen's Hunger as well.

Black film makers have long strove to produce a wider range of content. Unfortunately, Hollywood elite frequently turn down "risky" projects based on two assumptions

1) Films with primarily Black casts or Black leads are seen as being for Black people only (even though films with White leads are seen as having universal appeal). Consider the movie, Spawn, in which several Black characters were recast as White people (read up on race bending in cinema).

2) Black audiences are only interested in sex, hip hop, basketball and Christian dogma. According to industry executives, Black audiences aren't interested in other content.

When Black film makers propose other ideas, they frequently get a door closed in their face. Go read up on Dwayne McDuffie. His struggle with comics mirrors the struggle of Black filmmakers.

This basically sums it up.

I like Joe Cornish Attack The Block even though it wasn't financially successful

Kill Tyler Perry. If you do that I would use my powers to make you an honorary brotha for life complete with your own theme song, afro, and athletic skills of your choice.

You can use your time and money to hep improve shady/rundown neighborhoods or volunteer to help educate the youth.

You could give me athletic skills? Dude, no offense or anything, but don't make promises that you cant keep. Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme that he is, still couldn't make me athletic. :o

Learn to dance and not just from the waist down like the Irish.

and when it comes down to directing a superhero movie or a science fiction/fantasy movie how far down the list are black directors?
When we talk about who is directing Dr Strange or WW solo film or any other genre film...how far down the list do most people go before they name a black director.

They keep talking about making Johnny Storm black in a new FF4 movie. I think they should just go all the way and make them Marvel's First(black) Family...if Marvel ever gets them back.

Reed?

i'd watch it, twice.

start buying pink hair lotion and bean pies in bulk.

Okay, I love soul food, but never been able to find bean pie in my too-infrequent excursions to major US cities (no soul food in Toronto, just Jamaican/Caribbean and Caribbean-Chinese). Tell me what that's like, I'm genuinely curious.

Question:

How can a white guy from the suburbs help the black community?

There are tons of "hands-on" ways for white men to help. I've known a number of white men from the suburbs who decided to teach in predominately black neighborhoods. Not only that, I also have a buddy who has a medical practice in a predominately black neighborhood. Of course there's also volunteering, supporting neighborhood initiatives, and supporting black businesses.

I think one critical way white men can help the black community is to develop multicultural competencies and become allies. Yes, it's important to have an appreciation for different cultures, but it is even more important to understand the intersections of race, class, and privilege, as well as systems that perpetuate prejudice and exclusion, the impact of learned helplessness, etc. Being "in tune" really helps, and allows one to advocate on issues of social justice...which in the end both includes and extends beyond the black community.

I'll look into that. I will have to move closer to the city to make those things happen, which wont be soon.
