So honestly though, should I be offended, as a white man, that he's doing this? I'm not at all....but isn't him mocking "black face" just as stupid and insensitive?

you're asking black people if you, as a white person, should be offended by white face?

as to the second part of it, yes it's just as stupid. i find it incredibly unfunny. even Chappelle's white newscaster was his weakest stuff.

Nick Cannon Wears Whiteface: Cue the Backlash?

In this case, Cannon is being offensive. His goal is clearly to mock "White culture." The evidence is in the hastags he left in his tweets. Things like farmer's markets and cream cheese. I'm Black, my fiancee is Black and we go to the Thursday night farmer's market where we live. Then again, we are also English teachers and fairly nerdy, so perhaps we skew things. Perhaps what is described as stereotypical White culture are in reality things enjoyed by any upwardly mobile person, regardless of ethnic affiliation.

As it stands, it is just dumb. White chicks was more of a parody about socialites, whilst RDJ in Tropic Thunder was a parody of the nature of Blackface in general. Those people were being clever and self-aware to the point of being unequivocally metacognitive. White Chicks couldn't have made it any more apparent that it was lampooning the likes of Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie. Meanwhile, Tropic Thunder as a whole is a parody about film and Hollywood culture. In other words, at least those actors chose to be intelligent about it. There is nothing intelligent about dressing up as a White person to make "White people party music" and mock things like attending a farmer's market. Hopefully this album he has planned will fall flat like the rest of his career.

I understand that white people have a far more robust racist history than blacks, its the fact that to me it seems African American's are so offended by black face, then when they go and do white face it's supposed to be acceptable because white people have done worse? How does that make sense, or solve the core issue. If you truly feel badly about how black face (which lets be honest....really hasn't been used as a racial gesture since before I or many of you here on SHH were born) makes you feel then why do it to someone else of a different race and mock them?

Because suggesting whites are nerdy with white face isn't connected to an extended history of racial injustice.

If black face didn't remind blacks of a long history of white supremacy that not only caused our ancestors pain and humiliation but also our parents and grandparents then it would be just as acceptable as white face.

Also if the tables were turned I'm sure whites would be incredibly defensive about white face and they would be right to feel that way.

I'm not offended by black face I just think it's dumb. I've never watched the 80s movie "Soul Man" because even as a kid I thought the premise was dumb. No one in reality would believe that dude was black. I've never watched "White Chicks" for the same reason. Even after so many of friends said it was pretty funny. In the same vein though I've never watched "Mrs. Doubtfire" or "Big Momma's House" so, I guess I draw the line on men dressing up like women too. lol
