The Official Batman (1989) Thread - Part 5

Me too. It's really the dark and romantic figure of the night moment.

I couldn't tell you my favorite scene. This is one of those movies where great moments happen quickly after each other.

Agreed. Am I the only one who like the Batcave scene when Alfred brings Vicki down?

Nope. I don't care what the purists moaned about back in the day (or still do today), the way Alfred brought her down to the cave was brilliantly set up. Wanting his master to be happy, and perhaps even hoping Vicki would become an end to Bruce's crusade, which Alfred stated with the simple line of not wanting to grieve for his friend forever and potentially his son.
I loved it. Both Vicki and Alfred wanted Bruce to live a normal life. It wasn't OTT in cramming it down our throats like in TDK or TDKR. It was very subtly handled and ended just as subtly when at the end, both Vicki and Alfred knew this who Bruce was always going to be, and they would have to try to accept it.
And that sort of makes wish Vicki had of returned for the sequel.

"Look, sometimes I don't know what to think about this. It's just something I have to do."

"Why??"

"Because nobody else can."

Then, this exchange:

"I just gotta know, are we gonna try to love each other?"

"I'd like to. But he's out there right now, and I've gotta go to work."

Vicki in the Cave scene sucked so bad. Someone should tell Alfred that just because you sleep with a chick once after a few bottles of plonk doesn't mean you spill your guts to her about being Batman. Worst Alfred ever.

Ha they even slagged it off in Returns didn't they. Nice way of saying to the fans they were right to hate it.

See? No overdrawn backstory, motives, or exposition. Just a subtle piece of dialogue and it worked so well.

And that line with Vicki at the end was quite sad IMO.

And Alfred of the comics is ALWAYS cautioning Bruce about who to reveal his secret identity to, especially with women he's barely knows. As Sam Hamm rightfully said this would have been Alfred's last day at Wayne Manor.

Nah, I do agree with you. It was pretty rushed. She was just a fling, and Alfred was like, "My God, she is the one for him." :o

You're like the Joker. Sometimes I don't know whether you're telling the truth or not :oldrazz:

No offense Rodrigo, buddy ol pal, but it seems like you're trying a little too hard to love this movie and diss all the others now that we're done with Nolan. You say it was "brilliantly setup" and then you agree that it was pretty rushed. Which one is it?

For me, there's many scenes that i enjoy between Alfred and Bruce. But that scene is just terrible writing. There's nothing brilliant there. It's poorly setup. Bruce had ONE date with her, and suddenly Alfred thinks she's the one to tell everything to?? Not only that but Bruce is about to spill the beans to her after one date, sleeping with her once? Which feels like a contradiction because after that it seems like he can't even be bothered with her, treating her almost like a stalker. It doesn't make sense at all.

I confuse myself sometimes....It's something I've had to live for years and I can takes no mores :woot:

I was watching it on Netflix the other day, and I was analysing it and it still baffles me, to this day, even though I did love the scenes Keaton and Basinger shared, especially on the first (and only) date at the manor. I loved how quickly the character's bonded and you could feel the connection.
But how in the hell could she possibly say -
"I've loved you since I met you"?
What was there to love on that first meeting? He lied on that first ****ing night about not being whom she was looking for, and then lied to her after going to bed with her. Any real woman would be like -
"What the hell? If he wasn't rich, I wouldn't bother with the bastard again!" :p

I was watching the Nolan movies as well on Movietube :p

I think what is, is that the audience are meant to feel that connection in that one night, and then suddenly presume that both Bruce and Vicki are in love with another, but can't get to eachother because of Bruce's circumstances. It's a whole "love at first sight" sort of thing. But it wasn't all that well executed in the end.

But you said you loved the scene and then 20 minutes later you're dissing the scene :funny:

I do love it! But I'm aware I also have to take it for what it really is :funny:

It's a sweet love scene, between two people who apparently fell in love after a chat about a manor, their past, and a ONS :p

You know, it is possible to NOT hate something, or even like something but also admit that you feel it has shortcomings or could have been executed better, just like it's possible to like something and not love something for the same reasons.

It's just a little something i've noticed. When Nolans movies were fresh, Rodrigo was all about that, then when the Affleck announcement happened, it's been all about dissing Nolan and praising Burton + the shiny new toy. I still love yuh dude hahaha but i can't help but notice it. Anytime i see you in the Bat threads, it feels like im reading a huge beatdown on the Bale movies and constant praise of the other films when i remember it being the opposite at one point. I guess tastes change and that's fine but i notice the trend when a new thing has run its course, people tend to flock towards the much older thing and go all nuts about the upcoming project. And then it happens again when the BRAND NEW thing (like Affleck) starts getting older, suddenly ppl will start appreciating Nolans work. It's happening with Spidey now as well.

Who cares? Go complain in a different thread about how people have changed their opinions toward the Nolan films.

Opinions change. It happens. They don't have to be set in stone.

Yeah, I don't see why this thread has to be filled with this crap.

Anyways im out.

See you soon.

My favourite part of B89 is the Museum and the escape by Batman and Vicki including the Batmobile sequence.

If it had been set up that Bruce was the billionaire "playboy" sleeping with every super model in the country....then yeah, Alfred seems to have rushed it with her....but to me, they made it appear that Bruce was a shut in that had trouble having regular conversations with anyone, and then out of the blue he takes her to bed....Alfred was most likely saying "Thank God, he finally noticed a woman and figured out they can be nice to have around."
