When the newly white faced Joker is sitting in the chair at the surgeon's office, they didn't even put the makeup on that *******. I bet ya that ain't Jack. The only other stuff I can think of is the hand coming out of the water and the fall into the chemicals. I'm sure there were some deleted shots that the guy was in as well.

You're right about the make-up, but that was Jack. There is a behind the scenes picture of him in the chair. Obviously the guy falling into the chemicals was a stunt guy, and there's no need for the hand to be Jack's.

You remind me how much I love the first act of this movie. The Axis Chemicals sequence is still my favourite in any Batman film to date.

You might be right about the surgeon scene.

If you watch when he's hanging there and he falls it's clearly. But that was a stuntman for obvioys reasons.

What about when he's on the float, are there distance shots where it could be a stand in?

There was also the CG Joker at the end.

there was no CG in 1989.

Edit: inevitable correction - "of that type".

I don't remember seeing this van in the movie

It must have been in the production- I had a little Micro Machines toy of it. We do know that there was an unused car chase featuring The Joker in a van, so I guess that was it.

Well it was a computer image of some sorts cause it looked like crap.

I think it was probably an old-school effect achieved by overlapping negatives or something.

It was straight-up traditional hand animation (same with Batman's first moment in the film shown from above). Something isn't instantly 'crap' because it's done by a computer. What sense does that make?

Maybe so given when it was done but computer generated effects had been used prior to this I'm the Last Starfighter for instance.

I didn't actually say that. No need to get so bent out of shape about it jeez.

What I was saying was that it was well done whatever it was but as with the animation Batman at the start I know they got to a point where they practically ran out of money. I love this film and a few dodgy fx shirts don't change that but I'm not gonna pretend they're good cause I love the film.

Burton himself has openly admitted certain effects shots in the film he ended up unhappy with because by that point they just didn't have the budget to make them look better. If I recall the one shot he mentioned is that animated shot of Batman on the roof in the beginning of the film.

For years I thought that shadow was an umbrella.

I really love this one. :hrt:

I could look at pictures of Jack's Joker all day. The make-up job is just perfect and there's no way they could ever improve on that perma-smile.

I'm doing the Batman 89 movie party tonight at my local Alamo Drafthouse. I'll try to post some pictures, I'm pretty excited about it.

^ Hey matey, would you mind asking someone at the theatre where they are getting the reels for the film? I've been asking the local Embassy theatre here in Wellington to get the movie for years now, and they say they'd love to, but they can't find any reels.

My Alamo Drafthouse is an all 4K digital theater :csad:

Hmm. Figures. So I guess they are projecting the blu-ray disc or something maybe? Didn't realize Batman was in 4k yet.

Jack's Joker does really look terrifying in some shots.

I still think the '89 Joker is the best live-action adaptation in terms of aesthetics. The garish color, the stylized weapons, and Jack's crazed eyes made the character deliciously terrifying.

I'll be posting a link later today to my full-length, scene-by-scene analysis of Batman 1989. I've been working on it for well over a year, and its required quite a bit of thought and research.
