Batman '89 The Official Batman (1989) Thread - Part 6

I do think cancelling Keaton's Batman Beyond film is gonna prove to be a major mistake

The honest truth is that the Batman Beyond script (which was written by Cristina Hodson) evolved into the Batgirl movie very quickly (also written by Hodson). Beyond wasn't cancelled so much as it evolved into another project... and then was cancelled.

Well, I finally pre-ordered my first Hot Toys with this Keaton ('89) Batman.

Looks like this new addiction will have to add the Bale (Batman Begins) Batman and Pattinson (The Batman) Batman in the future.

I've only got one Hot Toys - Dark Knight Rises Batman that came out last year. Worth it. He's amazing.

I'd like to have Returns Batman, and Battinson. Keeping it at 3.

I’ll need a Heath, of course. But, will have to wait after getting all 3 of tk favorite batsuits.

Make sure to check out the reviews on the new Begins Hot Toys. I heard from someone that prior versions were superior.

For Hot Toys reviews, this guy is the best and I'd recommend his channel if you're curious about buying more figures.

For anyone thinking that my fanboy goggles are on too tight when I say WB are leaving money on the table not committing to final Batman film with Keaton simply because kids now may not know who he is, let's not forget the biggest hit of last year was Top Gun: Maverick.

A sequel from a 1986 film, with no popular brand IP attached to it. Was anyone even asking for a sequel to that? It's a cheesy 80s flick that Gen Z and Millennials aren't hot for.

And the sequel cleaned up, stomping all competition. Critically and financially.

There are people asking for this.
Batman is a universal selling point.
Keaton IS the star of the new Flash. Maybe not in total screen-time. But.
He is their marketing.

I've little doubt that more projects with Keaton could clean up.

Give us one more.
Batman Beyond, or something.

WB don't have to use Keaton again. But in a time where DC is embracing a shared universe and off the cuff elseworld films, why not?

Affleck is out of the picture fully soon, anyway. So Keaton doing a project just means the same amount of Batmen that we have now.

If DC is doing things differently than the MCU - let's go hard.

I have a feeling that with all the hype surrounding Michael Keaton’s return with how well the Super Bowl trailer was received, WB & James Gunn will definitely consider keeping Michael Keaton around if The Flash does well

Gunn himself even said that while DCU is the priority, multiverse/else-worlds films will also be considered. And with Batman being such a huge money maker for WB it would not surprise me that this won’t be the last we see of Michael Keaton as Batman

Man, I'm torn...a third Keaton film is something I've always been fascinated with as sort of a "holy grail" for the franchise.

But if we're gonna do it, I wish they would just commit to making Keaton the main DCU Batman for now before we introduce yet another Batman. To have the Reeves/Pattinson Batman, a new DCU Batman AND Keaton all concurrent...I don't know, I really do think it could be excessive to the point that it dilutes everything.

Don't get me wrong, I really would love see more Keaton, and after seeing The Flash trailer it does make me feel like something that is so tonally and visually off-base from what I love about his Batman (IMO) shouldn't be the last time we seen him.

Just wish there was a way to do this without having 3 concurrent, big-time Batman movie projects going. I always felt it would've been cool if they tried to get back Keaton for a Batman Beyond movie as the way forward post-Dark Knight Rises. It would've been cool to round off the story of another beloved Batman as a buffer between Nolan's trilogy and introducing a new rebooted Batman. Just wonder if we were a hair too late on pulling the trigger on something like this and now there's just too much in the way.

Of course, money talks and if Flash is a giant hit then I think Gunn would be crazy not to explore his options. Just am hoping this doesn't turn into a "careful what you wish for" situation.

To be honest, I want Keaton's Batman kept in his own universe. While its great fun seeing him interact with The Flash and Supergirl from the DCEU in a multiverse breaking storyline, in general I want him kept in the Burton Batman universe moving forward. Keep him Elseworlds.

This is exactly why I didn't understand them pulling the plug on a standalone Keaton Batman Beyond type movie that reunited him with Pfeiffer.

It just seems like the job Gunn was tasked with by Zaslav was to decrease the number of Batmen and tangent universes with DC and create a more streamlined thing...not add to the craziness. The original point of Flash was to consolidate timelines and tidy up continuity for moving forward, but this would be multiplying and creating more clutter.

I'm not even saying I want to see Keaton interact with the other DCU characters moving forward. My preference would be to have him in a movie directed by Tim Burton and scored by Danny Elfman that stayed in their Gotham.

I'm just saying I wish they could let that have its 'moment' vs. existing in a context where we have Brave & the Bold and The Batman universes already going. There's plenty to develop in the DCU without even needing to bring Batman into it just yet.

Announcing that a new Batman is coming before the world has even had a chance to reunite with Keaton's Batman isn't helping anything. I think it's well-intentioned-- they are trying to show confidence in Gunn's vision, but the timing of it all is very weird and only makes DC's continuity mess look even worse. The fact that they're changing this movie to REMOVE Keaton from the ending is honestly mindblowing when you think about it.

No wonder Snyder/Batfleck fanboys hold out such hope.

Keaton is in one project and suddenly I've got massive hope for something more.

WB keeps dangling carrots they don't want to give.

It would be pretty wild if after The Flash comes out, Keaton and Burton finally do Beetlejuice 2. And then if they're able to rekindle any magic there, it makes them both want to push for one more Batman film together.

"Time is a pattern...that it can't help reliving."

I have one gripe with the re-editing of some sound effects in the 4K '89.

The revving of the Batmobile.

At 0:39 - that sound as the Batmobile's engine revs is iconic, to me.

In the 4K - it's nearly inaudible. Also, I feel the sound effect of the canopy closing should've remained unchanged, as it's kind of an iconic Batman sound.

After watching The Mandalorian season 3 episode, I would be very interested to see Burton and Keaton return to this world with the updated technology of The Volume to create that version of Gotham.

I never noticed Batman must have thrown a smoke grenade into the library after he and Vicki exit. The film doesn't really let you know it.
You see him throw it in the museum as soon as he and Vicki burst through the door.

I love that moment because it has an in universe explanation as well as a behind the scenes explanation. In the the film I think it’s used to disorient Joker’s goons. However, in reality it’s also used to hide the fact that there was no set inside the Museum. The actual interior of the Flugelheim was shot on a stage.
