Batman Returns The Official Batman Returns Thread - Part 4

If they do Catwoman on screen again (lol... "if") they damn well better give her a better costume than Hathaway got. That look was basic as ****.

Pft, she wasn't Catwoman.

She was a specific version of Catwoman that worked in the world it was presented. I get why one wouldn't be satisfied with it as an adaptation but you can't deny how incredible of a performance it is. Same with DeVito's Penguin.

Agreed. Hathaway herself was good in the role, but her look was so bland.

I think she was badly miscast, to be honest, and I don't think Selina Kyle is a role that can really be cast against type.

To Olsen she's the only Catwoman in the sense that Reeve is the only Superman to millions of fans. Doesn't mean they can't enjoy other portrayals of the character, just means this particular portrayal is in a league of its own. There's nothing wrong with that, and its a subjective opinion that doesn't really deserve to mocked.

It's very possible that some people (such as Olsen) are not that into comic book movies or Batman as a whole. For them, they become attached to what they know from their childhood and have no desire to appreciate/follow what has come after.

For people of a certain age, it's all about Julie Newmar and that's fantastic. I thought she was wonderful and certainly set the precedent. While she's not my Catwoman, I can appreciate what she brought to the character and the nuances of her performance.

For others, it may be Hathaway. I personally don't think Nolan did her any favours, but she worked for some people.

Each interpretation is valid but anyone the right to choose a favorite and discard the rest based on taste/nostalgia.

Additionally, Olsen isn't ignorant or an idiot... she knows characters get recast, and the reason why it occurs. She was very obviously using hyperbole to express her affection for Pfieffer's portrayal.

Anywho... moving on...

Dissecting one little throwaway comment. Ah, the Hype.

How the hell could Shriek not figure out Bruce Wayne was Batman after that scene? Or at least suspect him after Bruce told him he knew Oswald was running the Red Triangle Circus gang? **** he couldn't even figure it out after he saw Bruce unmasked in the Bat costume!

Max Shriek. Stupidest evil businessman villain ever.

They shoot out when she squeezes a little pressure pad between her buttocks.

I enjoyed all of Keaton's interactions with Walken in Returns. Bruce just just can't conceal his utter disdain for Shreck. :woot:

As for the Catwomen...I honestly think both were great. Olsen's comment didn't really bug me. Anne herself has the same adoration for Pfieffer's performance and when she originally auditioned she was taken aback because she didn't think they could possibly do Catwoman again. So yeah, Michelle is definitely an icon for a certain generation of women. But Anne was fantastic in her own right despite the role not being nearly as meaty. I don't even think of it as against-type casting, it was pretty on the mark for me, and I know she had some supporters well before they even announced her in the role. Although obviously she has her haters too.

I was thinking about something the other day. Instead of the Red Triangle gang, I would've made them the Royal Flush Gang. Have the five core members, Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten. Do the gang similar to how they appeared in the movie and sort of how Arrow did the gang. Then have the henchmen be extensions of the group.
