Batman Returns The Official Batman Returns Thread - Part 4

I was 7 when I saw it in theater. I loved it. I don't see how a kid couldn't love this movie.

Well, keep in mind, we just had a news story about a college student petitioning to have graphic novels like Sandman taken out of her school because she found the content objectionable, so you know... some people are just kind of *****es.

that's totally crazy. this is what makes me sick.

I was 5 when I saw it in theaters.

It is what made me a Batman fan. Yes, it was scary but that added to the allure. I remember having to close my eyes a couple of times during The Penguin's scenes. And I did have some nightmares starring Devito's Penguin for a while. My room was still full of Returns posters, bedsheets and McDonald's toys.

Wouldn't have had it any other way. :yay:

I didn't see it in theaters but i saw it when i was about 4. Loved it.

To me, it's a movie made for kids. But not every kid is going to like it because of the tone, and not every parent will want their children seeing it. You need some level-headed parents for sure. I dont see the problem with showing old horror movies to your child, and i dont see the problem with showing Returns. I dont see how a kid wouldn't like it if they find Batman to be cool but you need to enjoy Batman.

But i dont think it's for adults because it's not very well written and it's incredibly cheesy. The people who grew up with it, become adults and they are the ones who like/adore the movie. It seems like anyone who was past a certain age back in 1992 when it dropped, shrugged their shoulders at the film. Or if you show it to somebody now who never saw it, they do the same. It's a lot like Star Wars. If you didn't grow up with it, chances are it's going to feel overrated, cheesy and childish. At least that's what i've seen from people.

Woah woah there shauner haha. I know some people didn't grow up with Star Wars and can't get into the movies but I'd have to stop short of saying Batman Returns is similar to Star Wars. You cannot compare the two in terms of cultural impact. And even though Star Wars is cheesy on the surface, beneath it all is very strong, classic mythological storytelling that resonates with people of all ages.

He's not saying BR has the same cultural impact as SW, he's just talking about growing up with a movie.

I get that, but that's true for plenty of cheesy movies that we loved growing up that don't really hold up as adults. The point is Star Wars was loved by many adults when it came out and probably shouldn't be lumped in that category, older people didn't "shrug it off" like a lot of teen/adult Batman fans did with Returns, it set the whole world on fire.

Returns is just its own animal. If you love gothic, atmospheric Tim Burtony kind of stuff, you'll probably love it regardless of your age.

Some kids probably weren't enamored with the movie because it did not have enough Batman versus a colourful villian. Plus, most kids respond to a black and white world. Catwoman was popular, but not as flamboyant or sadistic as The Joker.

It needed more Batman for the little ones.

What's weird with Keaton is how he kept on removing Batman's lines and any hint of development from the script. I appreciate what he was trying to do with the role and his presence certainly compensated, but Batman lacking any significant ''moments'' could be attributed to him.

He wanted a proper origin story for movie No. 3, so perhaps he felt he took it too far?

I was 9 when I saw it at the cinema. Nothing in it really shocked me since I had been watching R-rated action (Ie: Robocop, Commando, Cobra) and horror (Ie: Halloween, Friday and Nightmare franchises which were huge during my childhood) since I was 5.

Because of my more precocious tastes however I did walk out of Batman Forever extremely embarrassed and disappointed the first time I saw it at age 11. That's a conversation for another thread though.

Other than the cape "falling" gag, that bat glider shot is still so epic and cool.

Surprised that the pulled that off (except for the minor error) practically.

I definitely liked Batman Returns more as a kid than I do now (I don't hate the film or anything, but I do acknowledge its shortcomings and flaws).

One opinion of mine has stayed the same throughout the years, though: Catwoman is the star of the movie. :) I remember the year this movie came out, I got a lot of Catwoman stuff for my birthday and Christmas. Heck, I even had a Catwoman-themed birthday party that year AND I dressed up as her for Halloween. So yes, I have much love for Michelle Pfieffer as Catwoman.

I do have a lot of nostalgic feels for this movie, I must admit. There's a lot to enjoy about the movie, and I admit that while not all of Tim Burton's creative decisions work for me (especially when concerning The Penguin), I still prefer the "Batman Returns" Tim Burton who took risks over the Tim Burton we have now any day.

The Tim Burton we got now is the old Tim Burton to me, at least with Big Eyes.

I never understood where that glider came from growing up. It just kind of appears.

I always thought it was his cape that became the glider via in-built mechanics. Which I thought was awesome. So I was surprised and saddened to see him using an actual glider, separate from the cape in the comics... and why I was so damn glad to see the memory cloth in BB.

Those gifs are excellent, especially the last one.

Logic be damned, like the B66 batshield which Batman somehow folds up into his utility belt back pocket. :funny:

That first GIF of Bruce will always (to me at least) be the most iconic shot of the Burton films. Just brilliant.

Well, it was much bigger than the cape and pops out of nowhere. Plus, you can see the real cape falling behind him. But this movie is really a kind of fairy tale so details like that have to fall by the wayside. But yeah, the memory cloth was definitely a revolutionary idea. It is now pretty much standard that the cape serves as a glider.
