Batman Returns The Official Batman Returns Thread - Part 4

Well, it was much bigger than the cape and pops out of nowhere. Plus, you can see the real cape falling behind him. But this movie is really a kind of fairy tale so details like that have to fall by the wayside. But yeah, the memory cloth was definitely a revolutionary idea. It is now pretty much standard that the cape serves as a glider.

I mean that was my reaction as a kid, who was watching on video and never noticed the actual cape dropping behind him. Even so, I still think it's supposed to be the cape transformed rather than a separate glider, given how they tried to hide it falling away, and the way it magics back into a cape when he lands. I love that rolling landing, by the way.

Is Batman Returns sort of the Heaven's Gate of superhero movies? Please hear me out! Michael Cimino's Heaven's Gate (which coincidentally, also featured Christopher Walken) is often considered to be the movie (or the straw that broke the camel's back) that pretty much ended the "New Hollywood" period of filmmaking. This was the period in which during the 1960s and 1970s, auteurs enjoyed unprecedented creative freedom and control of their work.

Tim Burton as many of you may know by now, also enjoyed unprecedented creative freedom and control over Batman Returns in sharp contrast to the 1989 movie. The end result was a very polarizing movie that didn't become the mega blockbuster that Warner Bros. hoped for (it still made money, but it wasn't as much as the '89 movie, which was produced on a lower budget to boot). Afterwards, Warner Bros. decided to get more controlling of the Batman movie franchise in hopes of making it more "commercial, safe, and marketable" to young children and their parents. Thus, they hired Joel Schumacher and we got Batman Forever.

Batman Returns to me would have been a great movie, had they took the treatment of Bruce Wayne/Batman from Forever, and put it in Returns. Here you have the Penguin asking why his parents did what they did to him, and you have Batman asking himself why he did what he did in terms of the (Red Book) plot to his parents. It would have been a great excuse to explain why he was so dark and vengeful in Returns, only to finally turn the page in the Red Book and see that it wasn't his fault, and finally Return to who Batman was suppose to be.

ooooh.

The thing I noticed the other day is we complain on and on about too much studio interference. Rather it be Spider-Man 3, Amazing Spider-Man 2 or WB basically saying apply the Nolan Batman formula to Superman. There was interference on Batman (1989) but you know why Returns sucked... more or less? Cause they give all the creative control to Burton. He brought in a writer he worked with (of course nothing new or strange about that for many directors) and all the pre-existing producers got demoted to Executive Producer.

Now if you like Batman Returns in general or even more than 1989, fine, whatever. Just some food for thought.

At 16 when Insaw this I did notice it was rather a weird and somber Batman but to me all the weird sexual Catwoman innuendoes and Penguin's dirty remarks made this a more "adult" Batman moreso than B'89 that audiences can say "hey comics are no longer the silly BIFF! POW! SMASH!"

Batman Returns is one of my favourite movies ever. I prefer it over Batman 89 (which I love too).

I feel the same. BR is a film we are likely never going to see the likes of again, especially in the superhero genre. It's absolutely unique and brilliant in its own way. I like the layers of meaning it has under the gorgeous visuals.

exactly. It's way smarter than people give it credit for.

i still prefer Batman '89 but Batman Returns is great and terribly underrated

i actually have much more nostalgia for Batman Returns due in large part to all the awesome toys & merchandise that came out for it. i was 7 years old at the time that movie came and i felt as if i hit the jackpot with so much awesome toys that went along with that movie. and lets not forget the awesome Batman Returns game for the SNES :word:

His cape actually takes the shape of Nolan's Bat logo there. Subliminal message!

I don't think they quite captured her face, making it a little too cartoony...

Ahh, I see what you mean. Oh well, at least it looks good from a far...with the right lighting. :oldrazz:

I would have preferred the face had a smirk as opposed to an open mouth , but I think I'll still get this. :O :D

Totally agree with everything you said. That is why it's my favorite CBM.
