I didn't realize that until today! That's all they are talking about in this area. They were saying that they are both basically the same person except Floyd is black and Connor is white and also a foreigner but you have the crowd chanting for Connor when most people would chant USA, especially against a guy like Connor who loves playing the heel. Connor said something about a Rocky commercial where the guy had a monkey on his shoulder and didn't say anything racist at all but people were definitely reaching for it. It's on TMZ right now. It seems like it's getting pushed hard now. But I guess any kind of publicity is good publicity.
Combat sports, Professional Wrestling and Porn are some of the only places left where racism is still readily accepted. Even encouraged.
Boxing is one of the few places I've seen Americans root against other Americans willingly. Outside of Ray Leonard or maybe Roy Jones for a bit, there's hardly ever been black boxers who gained popularity without being the villain. Nobody's made that work for them better than Floyd obviously, when he was "Pretty Boy", he wasn't disrespecting opponents AND he was knocking them out. Nobody cared like they claim to now when they accuse him of not doing those things. Even Lennox Lewis, who's skin color I guess trumped his nationality, certainly wasn't portrayed as a "good" guy.
Every other country supports their fighters, but put any white guy from whatever country up against a black American boxer, and you get this type of stuff. And a lot of these black boxers were Olympians to boot. Conor being white, but more importantly Irish, makes this like the 'Great White Hype' in real life. Had this been Tyron Woodley, nobody in the general public would care. I also think (just my opinion) that the reason they didn't want his mic on during the first event was for fear of him saying something to cross that line. And he almost did...
