People make all kinds of weird comments to hype their fights. I'm not excusing some of the comments people make, but some of them are way over the top. Remember Tyson's "I'm gonna make you my girlfriend" comment? Ali used to infuriate a huge chunk of white America intentionally. How did they react? By showing up at his fights and padding his wallet. LOL.

I am the king of the world!! I'm so pretty. etc.

Using racism to hype a fight does not make one's comments any less racist.

You seem to conveniently forget that the controversy erupted not an hour or so before the fight, but, at the latest, the day before the fight and only after Mayweather saw, and tried on the gloves, Maidana was going to use FOR THE FIRST TIME. Maidana wanted to use gloves that gave him the best chance and that meant less padding. I don't blame him for that; nor do I blame Floyd for saying "no".

The allegation (the day BEFORE the fight) was that Maidana wanted to use gloves with less padding than those Floyd was using. That's when the complaint surfaced and repeating the same "hour or so before" BS doesn't change reality. Floyd could have used the gloves with less padding, but with his history of hand problems, that would have been stupid and put him in a potentially dangerous situation.

People are entitled to the biases, but it doesn't change reality.

FACT: Those gloves weren't some new brand of gloves never before seen, one of Mayweather's guys had used those same brand and type of gloves on one of his cards
FACT: those gloves and brands have been used for decades.

I don't get why you're not understanding this. You're the one being biased as hell. Mayweather at the 10th hour threw a hissy fit and wanted Maidana to use sparring gloves, simple as that.

A "potentially dangerous situation" gtfo. Stop trying to act like that was a Panama Lewis/Luis Resto situation, there wasn't less padding, those gloves were made from horse hair, that's why they're called the "puncher's glove". They've been using them for decades. Look it up, educate yourself.

1. What gloves did Maidana use?

2. If he changed, did he agree for any particular reason to change?

3. If they were changed, and Maidana wasn't comfortable, why did he fight?

But I am curious. Considering context, how is it not racist? This isn't "hidden" malice. This is rather straightforward. It is interesting to argue he didn't know what he was saying, because then why would he say it, and then try and change what he was saying once he said?

By the way, the one throwing the racist terms out does not get to decide if it is racist or not, especially when all context is provided. That is ridiculous.

Potentially Dangerous is a poor choice of words on my part. Anytime you step into a ring, you are in a dangerous situation. Using gloves with less padding would have been dumb because of his hands. Not so for Maidana. Maidana decided to not push the matter. That's on him (I'm not sure what would have happened if he had insisted on those gloves).

Floyd did what he thought would give him the best chance to win and Maidana was trying to do the same. It worked out how it worked out and it seems silly to complain about it. I know I wasn't making negative comments about either fighter....so much for my bias. I don't particularly like or dislike either fighter. My guy is Lomachenko.

This is "exactly" right IMO. Ali always got his way. You know why? He was putting butts in the seats.

If you aren't looking for every advantage you can get, you're an idiot. If you think Maidana wasn't looking for an advantage in the choice of gloves, you're being naive.

Complaining about this sort of water under the bridge is silly. Do what you can to get a competitive advantage, fight and collect your paycheck. If you decide you don't want to fight because you think the deck is stacked, don't fight and go home. I've got no problem with either approach....but I'm biased.

Titles have weight limits and the governing bodies shouldn't let fighters change that. Saying a guy has to come in at 156 for a 160 title fight is just utter BS imo.

Yeah.....the weight thing is BS. A weight class is a weight class. When my father boxed, you had the weigh in the day of the fight. He spent time in the sauna, spit and did whatever to come in at 135 (they didn't have Jr and Super classifications back then and it was way harder to move up in weight).

Now these guys have more time to build back up and come in WAY over the weight limit. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but if a guy can make the weight, he makes the weight.

So, the rules have changed, but a middle is a middle is a middle and a welter is a welter is a welter.

I'm not seeing what you're seeing on the site, but sometimes my page jumps down and I end up clicking on the wrong thing if I'm not patient and wait for it to make its little jump.

It's really weird, it's taken me 5 attempts just to reply to you.

No, I get that. But this is a question of racism being shown by a fighter. If you don't want to talk about such things, why comment on this then? Its what you said you don't want to talk about.

The man has a history of saying racist things, ones that are very much based on the local context of his opponent. Like what he said about Aldo and Diaz. Both different races, from two different countries. So it is hard to say he didn't know what he meant here, when he has done such things in the past, using context not from Ireland, but from where each fighter is from.

Fandom, race and political leanings it seems. I say that last one because "SJW" is seemingly a favorite claim on this one.

I don't think Connor's racist but here IN THE NYC area on ESPN radio they are all talking about them being on a very thin line of it being about race, even though neither boxer may realize it. With the Irish flags that Connor brought to the press conferences, it was even said that this is the first time in decades that you have the top 2 black and white athletes in any respected sport since Bird and Magic go head to head. With the way this country is now with race relations being so big, I can definitely see it being pushed by the media.

I listen to Bomani Jones on ESPN. My favorite radio show/podcast they have. He has been saying this for months. He doesn't think the USA is ready for this fight. Not in the state we are in at the moment. And this is exactly why.

I didn't realize that until today! That's all they are talking about in this area. They were saying that they are both basically the same person except Floyd is black and Connor is white and also a foreigner but you have the crowd chanting for Connor when most people would chant USA, especially against a guy like Connor who loves playing the heel. Connor said something about a Rocky commercial where the guy had a monkey on his shoulder and didn't say anything racist at all but people were definitely reaching for it. It's on TMZ right now. It seems like it's getting pushed hard now. But I guess any kind of publicity is good publicity.

These press conferences have looked staged, WWE type staged. Entertaining nonetheless. This is as exciting as the event will be though. The fight is going to be a waste for anyone dumb enough to pay for it.

Dude, I get it, I get that the A-side gets to dictate the terms on everything. Even if they're not the champ, A-side, lead promoter, dictate EVERYTHING. I. Get. It.

Still doesn't change the fact that it was a b*tch made move to want to change the gloves a day before the fight, after everything was already signed and inspected by the NSAC.
