The Official Casting The Superman Reboot Thread

problem is Hamm has even said he feels he is too old

Hamm echoed a sentiment held by some members of the comic book community: that he's simply too old to play the Man of Steel. "I maybe aged out of that competition," Hamm said of playing Superman. "I don't know, I think unless Superman's power was the power of being really old."
It's not the first time that Hamm has downplayed his odds of playing Superman. Earlier this year, we spoke with the actor and he expressed a different concern in donning the red and blue tights: "It's a tricky road to go down with some of those heroes, because they're not flawed. Superman is Superman — he's invincible, so where's the drama?"

Why does Superman need to be in his mid/late twenties? With the exception of Superman Birthright, the Superman of the comics has never struck me as a young man. He always seems like he is in his mid-thirties... which Jon Hamm can easily pull off. He may be nearly breaching 40, but he doesn't really look that old. Many, many actors play ages that are not their own and if this film isn't another origin story, I think Hamm has a serious shot at it. If they are building this thing from the ground up, than that's a different story.

I think he does look like he is breaching 40, and he has a contract at the moment for Mad Men where he is being asked NOT to work out or get into shape, as to look more like normal men of the era. - that combined with him looking, and according to him, feeling his age should be enough to take him off the list.

Now if he did not have his contract asking him not to work out, I would say that he could make a very good Kingdom Come Superman.

The thing about an "established" superman is just that he has been around as superman for a few years. Not that he would look older.

Superman does not age normal in the DCU. He ages very slowly, and depending on the writer, in some cases he ages very slowly, and then stops when he is looking about 45, where he would still look strong, but also mature and wise. I think in Generations he was said to hav inverse aging. The older he is the slower he ages, until it effectively stops.

No matter what writer is involved, he ages very slow.

So even a Superman who has been around 10 years would still look no older than the day he showed up in Metropolis for the first time.

How old should that look? I'd say 25-35 range. He should not look like he is feeling his years yet.

At the same time he should Not look boyish, and needs to look strong and masculine. - It is possible to look masculine without looking old.

Zack Synder also said something about not wanting to do Superman for many reasons and he is the director. Now I'm not saying that Hamm is going to get the role or that he even wants it but actors say untrue s**t all of the time to throw people off of the casting trail.

I don't think that he's going to get it but he's not out until they cast the role in my opinion. I learned my lesson after the hiring of Zack Synder.

Okay here's the updated cast list:

I liked the cast better before you changed it.:woot:

Besides his really solid acting ability...

If Brandon Routh doesn't get the role, I hope he does.:woot:

Ok, so Nolan surrounded Christian Bale with heavyweights like Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Liam Neeson, Tom wilkinson, Ken Watannabe and Rutger Hauer.
I think it's safe to assume that this ensemble alone added a HELLuva lotta class to the production as well as drawing in the critics.

I'd like this reboot to go the same way, but there aren't that many roles for aged heavyweight, I believe.

I had an epiphany about Perry White and see HUGE potential in letting him be played by:

I could see Nolan going this way.

Which heavyweights could be cast as Jonathan and Martha Kent, and what other characters are there to associate with great names like Hoffman?

Think big now...

Superman/Clark Kent: Jon Hamm

Lois Lane: Rachel Weisz

General Zod: Clive Owen

Lex Luthor: Jason Isaaxs

Martha Kent: Helen Mirren

Jonathan Kent: Clint Eastwood

Perry White: Anthony John Denison

Jimmy Olsen: Jamie Bell

Young Clark Kent: Logan Lerman

Jor-El: Josh Brolin

Zara: Lena Headey

Superman/Clark Kent: Henry Cavill

Lois Lane: Anne Hathaway

Lex Luthor: Joaquin Phoenix

Zod: Edward Norton

Ursa: Olga Kurylenko

Perry White: Harvey Keitel

Jimmy Olsen: Michael Angarano

Jor-El: Daniel Day Lewis

Lara: Robin Wright

Robert Maillet reminds me a bit of O'Halloran for Non, but I wouldn't mind seeing him for this part. He looks more interesting than Jones, who's already gonna be Darkseid's physical frame anyways. :yay:

My choices (and I don't like Superman's classic model-ish face for the movie):

Clark Kent / Superman - John Krasinski (or Ryan Gosling)

Lois Lane - Emily Blunt

Zod - Tom Hardy (or Daniel Craig/Joaquin Phoenix)

Perry White - David Strathairn

Jimmy Olsen - Evan Peters

Superman/Clark Kent - (if they go younger) Unknown, (if they go older) Gerard Butler

Lois Lane - Jessica Stroup OR (if they go famous) Rachael McAdams

Lex Luthor - Tom Hardy, Jason Issacs or Leonardo DiCaprio

Bruno Manheim - Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Jonathon Kent - John Hamm

Don't have a lot of specific people in mind for anyone else.

And people complain about Bale's Batlisp, if they cast Butler WB will never hear the end of that!

There are alot of casting possibilities for this film. Although we should all accept the fact that Zane won't get cast as Luthor. That could have happened in the 90's but not anymore.

Leo or Hardy are my choices for Luthor.

Hoffman would make a fantastic Perry White. Great call there.

Carla Gugino is an interesting choice for Lois. Not the best, but I wouldn't mind it. Rachel McAdams would make a great Lois. Evangeline Lilly maybe...? Maybe or maybe not, could be just my lower half talking.

Leo looks terrible bald. I wouldn't want him, he seems very wrong.

I think a lot of the casting choices are a bit too....I don't know unreasonable. Maybe that's not the word. I guess I just can't see Rachel Weisz or Anne Hathaway taking on the role of Lois or Ed Norton as Zod. I think some of the side characters being cast here are a bit too much or well known for the roles. I do get that in the old Supes films there were well known actors/actresses in some of the roles (Pa Kent, Otis, Jor-el, Lex, Perry) but it seems here we want all the roles filled by people we know.
No one knew Margot Kidder or Chris Reeve before S:TM- so I guess what I'm saying is keep the well knowns to the smaller role and maybe the villain but that's it and lesser known actors for Clark, Lois etc.

So her it goes:
Superman: I’m down with Armie Hammer
Lois: Malin Ackerman (maybe) worked with Snyder; can do humor (Heartbreak Kid) which Lois has always had. Otherwise Rachel McAdams.
Lex: Tom Hardy
Zod: Gerard Butler - everytime I see 300 and he yells "THIS IS SPARTA" I'm thinking "KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!"
Ursa: Is she even in it? Sorry I haven't read every thread.
Jimmy Olsen: Some unknown- I just don't see someone like Anton Yelchin taking a minor role like this with Star Trek 2 coming and making him even more of a star. Rupert Grint maybe?
Jor-El: Jon Hamm
Lara : Unknown; but I do like the Lena Headley idea.
Perry White: I've liked the Alec Baldwin idea but when someone brought up Hoffman I changed my mind.
Pa Kent/Ma Kent: Needs to be someone age appropriate depending on who they cast as Clark. I am digging Kurt Russell as Pa Kent / and Sally Field as Ma
Brainiac: Jason Isaacs- Hugo Weaving is being overused for roles like this.

My Bet is that none of these people will be cast in any of the roles; but it’s fun just to think about it.

Throw in Doomsday. Then Superman is not so invincible anymore.

Doomsday is way too large scaled to start a first film off.

My choices (and I don't like Superman's classic model-ish face for the movie):

Clark Kent / Superman - John Krasinski

Finally, someone else sees how good he could be as Superman! My top 4 choices for Clark/ Superman right now are Krasinski, Armie Hammer, Jon Hamm, and Zachary Levi (who has interestingly enough been on a show with 3 actors who have portrayed Superman in some capacity. Of course, I'm speaking of Brandon Routh, Matt Bomer, and Adam Baldwin.)
