If Richard bites it at the end of the second film, he still has to be that great guy all the way through as he was in Returns. He essentially was Superman without the powers in the film and he needs to repeat that in the sequel.
It will be meaningful if they play their cards right. Superman and Lois have to come together at the end. It can't be just as easy as Lois choosing Superman over Richard. It has to be more. A sacrifice would be fine but he can't be seen as a jealous or bad guy in the film. He has to be just as loving and just as caring as he was in the first.
