The Official Costume Thread - - - - Part 13

It's funny how people can find a way to defend the red panties. Ah well, they're gone and I'll be enjoying the movie that much more. Red panties look dated and silly especially in live action, and I'm glad the people who agree with me are the ones the matter: the movie's artists and Snyder. I'm sure Nolan liked it as well.

Hating the movie costume because it doesn't have red panties is just crazy. If you take the costume on its own context as a piece of fashion, then red panties is bizarre to modern eyes. Only Lady Gaga would rock the look. The cape doesn't look weird because it's used as a cape and acts like a cloak, while red panties aren't normally worn over pants. If Superman existed in the present, do you really think he would choose to wear red panties? As if he didn't feel weird enough?

Saying "panties" repeatedly to upset the people who like the "trunks" is trolling. Do it again and you take some time off.

Calling trunks "panties" would get someone banned?

Talk about overzealous mod behavior. Sounds like it's more based on someone disagreeing with the position than "trolling".

uh no, it wasn't over reacting by C.LEE..If the guy had of only said it once, maybe twice, to get his point across, then fine, but he didnt. Anyone over 10 can tell what the poster was trying to do.

What bizarro (no pun intended) world is this where someone would get banned for using the word "panties" to refer to what clearly appears to be underwear?

Oh, right... an online forum for comic book fans.

Step back from the computer screen, take a dose of reality, and realize what a hyper-overreaction it would be to ban someone for the use of the term "panties".

He was calling the trunks red panties so it'd be pointless to change up mid paragraph.
Just playing Devils advocate.

As far as I can tell he only used the term because someone just before him had.

I don't like to use the term trunks, because trunks don't look like what Superman wears on the outside of his pants. Trunks are shorts, to me. What Superman traditionally wears are either speedos or underwear ("briefs").

it's not because of the word "panties"...it's because of using it in a derogatory/insulting way.

the word ******ed is not a derogatory word, it is a medical term. but if you keep calling someone that in an insulting way, then it's the usage, not the word itself.

a guy doesn't wear panties. it was obviously meant as an insult.

"It's not because of the word 'panties'." "A guy doesn't wear panties [and thus it's improper to use the word 'panties' in the context of Superman]."

So, yeah.... it's because of the word "panties."

Maybe he thinks they're panties and he doesn't want Superman, being a guy, wearing them because of that. Perfectly logical to me.

And who is it insulting? Superman? Are Superman's feelings hurt?

The person repeatedly saying 'red panties' was obviously doing it to try & get a reaction from the person who was supportive or likes the trunks, therefore it was trolling.

It was partially because of the word panties & partially because the person had said it about 6 times in 1 post.

People who want them to stay call them trunks or shorts. People who want them to go call them "panties", "underwear", "speedos", etc. It's not a coincidence. and if you call them panties, then you are insulting people who like Superman's traditional costume, as designed by his creator, Joe Shuster. Conversely, people who call the trunks what they are-trunks-are insulting no one. That's the difference. People who call them panties are insulting the people who like the trunks and they are insulting Shuster as well by ridiculing his design with a juvenile term.

I think calling the trunks "panties" is sort of an open sneer at Superman himself refering to his clothes using a term used for female undergarments. I love Superman and there is not a thing I would change about him. Speaking in a derogatory way about apart of his uniform is not something I would do but people are welcome to if that is what they feel.

It is not underwear since its not under anything, its not panties because he is male and its not worn as an undergarment. They are trunks, athletic clothing covering the "trunk" area of the body.

If someone is insulted because they prefer a comic book costume that others' consider to include "panties", then the problem is their own, not the person who calls them "panties."

Uh....saying that he loves the new costume and is bewildered by the people that hate the new costume in the upcoming Superman movie is not a sneer at Superman himself. Superman is Superman with or without the briefs on the outside. In fact, now it's the case that Superman does NOT have colored briefs on the outside of his clothing in the comics or the movie.

Is it sneering at Superman for someone to say they prefer the current version of Superman over previous versions? Of course not.

Stop acting the dumbass, you know full well what was going on & why people were irritated by the comment.

It's a term that is used for one reason and one reason only: to get a rise out of people. One can discuss losing the trunks without being insulting. It's a provocation, pure and simple.

I think it's a real shame that comics fans have so little respect for the characters creators. LOTR fans treat Tolkien with reverence. Siegel and Shuster deserve the same from Superman fans, but don't get it. But heck, I've even seen supposed Fantastic Four fans call Jack Kirby a "hack" when they were defending the failed FOX movies and the CEO version of Dr. Doom, so that's comics fans for you I guess.

Superman has lost his trunks for one reason only IMO.

Realism.

People are obsessed with it. Our superhero films and stories are now full of it.

And because of this obsession with having every single thing about a superhero story be logical, realistic, and representing the time period they are set in recognisably, the people making this film have decided that Superman wearing trunks won't work.

They've mulled it over and come to the conclusion that if Superman were to actually exist in our world, if a boy with powers grew up and decided to put on a costume and save people, he'd wear something that no one could consider uncool.

They've decided that because they can see no specific logical reason for him to wear trunks, especially with this new material which i'm sure doesn't cling to his package like a ballet dancer, that they can't justify using them. Because they would have no way of 'explaining' them.

Captain America went from this:

To this:

Look at everything they've changed on that suit, all for the sake of realism. The helmet, the complete lack of the red and white stripes (other than two red buckles).

I really don't see how we can complain too much about finally loosing the battle for Superman's trunks (for which I very much was on the side of the trunks).

When this 'realism' fad is over, i'm sure they will come back.

Right now i'm just glad the new suit is none of the following:

1. Armour
2. CGI
3. T-shirt and Jeans with a cape
4. Black

I've always been on the fence about the trunks. I'm not really bothered either way. I do think that anyone getting upset about them being called panties should maybe have a time out and a word with themselves.

Then why is he still wearing a freakin belt? And if you look close the belt is black.
