I definitely fall into the category "If you really think any of the trunkless suits portrayed here are better than the original then you have very different tastes and aesthetic values from me". There's not a single valid argument been proposed here for removing the trunks.

Although... I have (IMO) given a very valid arguement for why the costume needs the trunks and nobody has really come out and disputed that claim.

Re: the trunks break up the blue making the actor look thicker and not skinnier, like a uniform colour all the way down would.

The costume is a symbol (much like Batman's costume) Without the costume.. you have Smallville's "Blur" and I don't know anybody who liked that.

i think that's something that you're missing though. there doesn't have to be a single valid argument to remove the trunks. snyder the director may just like a trunkless version of superman and thats what he wants the audience to see. or it may be an edict from dc/wb and or nolan. the comic book fans are going to see superman either way and if its a good movie the general audience is going to see it. superman trunks or not, it really doesn't matter. it's the portrayal of the character that is important. i've seen plenty of designs without the trunks that i think could work. they're trying to update and modernize superman. superman looks different than when he first started and it's just a natural progression. i remember when they modernized superman in an issue of wizard magazine came out and everyone seemed to love that rendition, not sure why people are so upset and opinionated over this. this could be the last superman movie for awhile, can't we all just get along? lol

this is what i hope the suits belt is

a plane but angled belt

just curious how you could say "not a chance"? i think it's going to look similar to the picture. it looks like an x and it doesn't look like there's going to be trunks to me. just wondering if you knew something that we all didn't.

I can say that, because I have 25+ years of working with art directors and production designers so I know good design when I see it, and that isn't it.

Exactly!
I remember the manips that were paraded around earlier which made the costume look like some Halloween reject that got picked up at a Walmart bargain bin, and have the gall to say it looked cool.
But Snyder and co. got the material down pat. It looks cool. Texture and all, it's convincing and that's what matters.
I can't wait to see the next pic.

Hey, for once you and I can agree on something. I like the texture on the MOS costume and I also like the texture on the new Spider-man costume. It's a nice contemporary touch that will make both costumes really 'pop' on the screen.

Belt2.jpg

I just lightened up the shadows to reveal that there are some seams or tubing or belting and they definitely attach to the belt buckle at a 30-45 degree angle. You can also see more along the waist... but at a lesser angle perhaps (hard to see with his body all scrunched up.) AND... some sort of raised thigh piece on his right thigh

VOICE OF REASON:

Looking at this picture, I can't believe how people are debating what may or may not be there. The only thing around his waist is a thin black belt -- following exactly the path given by the white photoshopped lines above -- and golden buckle. Anyone calling it gold or red is being delusional.

Now you can keep arguing about it, making incorrect photoshopped guesses, you can see what I'm saying, or you can wait until a clearer picture arrives and proves me correct. But this is just ridiculous to me -- how far people are going to invent a design that isn't there in the least.

Yeah, it is pretty gaudy. BTW, this was the first time I've noticed you mention your background actually.

Calm down, we're just having a bit of fun. It amazes me how people are seeing so many different things, and everyone is so sure that what they see is correct. I personally can't see why anyone could think there's any black on this costume at all. But whatever. We'll find out eventually. Until then, WE MANIP!!! :woot:

Anyway, here are a few more versions. I had one more that added some red under the belt without having the full trunks, but Photoshop conked out and I lost it. I'll do it again at some point.

Really amazing manips. I like the one on the right the most, but the additional red above the beltline I could do without. It's very creative how you gave him trunks that aren't actually trunks. Not a bad compromise imo.

I could live with any of these, the third option being my choice of course.

God, I hope he has red trunks/ underwear. It would look so wrong without it. So long as there's some red there to break up the blue that's good to me.

For the record....I don't remember seeing you mentioning this before.

ok two quick things. one it doesn't matter how long you've been working with art directors and production designers. art is subjective and you should know that. what you may think doesn't look good, others may think it looks fantastic. second thing is, you said "not a chance" as if you were a part of the production of the movie. from what it looks like, it looks like there are no trunks and that the belt does have an x as outlined by someone. thats what some people are seeing and for you to say "not a chance" isn't right. there has been no clear cut picture of the suit and it could very well be an x belt. you have said that there hasn't been a valid argument for no trunks and yet in a recent post you said "nice manip" to a few that didn't have any trunks. again, it's all subjective.

"Art" and "design" are very different animals.
Art is open to any interpretation, but design is intended to elicit a certain interpretation.
