I have hated every live action Batman costume that has ever been designed. They all suck.

If everything else about the MOS movie is true to the spirit of Superman, and if he is pure, noble, heroic, optimistic and does not kill, then I will overlook the flawed-but still pretty cool-costume.

Agreed. It's baffling to me that, after all this time, they still can't get Batman's costume right. Don't think they nail the characterization either, although Nolan came close. Problem is, every director (including Nolan) taking on the project views Batman as a regular guy -- "someone that anyone can become with hard work and training". And that's wrong. Bruce Wayne is a prodigy; his mental and physical prowess exceeds that of normal men. They don't get that though and possibly never will.

And yes, Superman should not kill, in my opinion. No "accidental kills" either please. One of the things that bugged me in Batman Begins was near the end when Bats said to Ghul (who shouldn't have been his mentor in the first place), "I won't kill you, but I don't have to save you." In the comics, both Bats and Supes sometimes risk their own lives to ensure that even criminals aren't harmed. It's one of the things that separates them from other heroic characters.

Previous posters have said some interesting things about how even though the trunks look better in print on the comic page, they don't translate as well to the screen. I must admit, I can see what they mean. When watching previous Superman movies, although my conscious mind is largely thinking "That's Superman! That's the classic costume!", there's often a small part of me thinking, "Tee hee hee...he's wearing his underwear on the outside." I mean, that's just Superman's costume, but it seems like I think about it more when you see him in live action.

I'm just curious...when MOS is finally released, how many of you think the costume will look BETTER onscreen without trunks, and how many of you think it'll look WORSE? Because even though with previous Superman movies, you might have thought about him wearing his trunks over his pants, there's a chance that when we're watching Henry Cavill in the new movie, our brains won't be able to comprehend the sight of a trunks-less Superman without thinking that he just looks "off", as in he kinda looks naked. You know, the whole walking-around-nude-while-wearing-socks look.

No chance it will look as good or better than it did with the trunks. It already looks inferior in set photos. Instead of the eyes going to the \S/ first thing like they're supposed to, they go to the crotch because the trunks are missing...then you see a big, ewwwy lump. It's gross. It'd make a decent Superwoman costume, but it's wayyy to effeminate for Superman.

Kurosawa, random question, but what do you think of Superman For All Seasons? Personally it's one of my favorite Superman stories, but then again I'm a sucker for the Byrne era (NOTE: I do love Silver Age stories as well).

Onto the costume: YES, it would look better with the trunks. Right now it's kind of cool, but looks too damn bland in those new set pics. Like a steak without proper seasoning.

I generally like Loeb on Superman but I can't get past Tim Sale's art and his Jethro Bodine/Lil Abner/Lennie Small looking Clark Kent. I hate the "Superman is a Kansas farmboy"trope-it wasn't there Pre-Crisis when Superman was a sophisticated urbanite.

Also, just to clarify, I realize my question above may be construed as just starting anew the same old trunks/no trunks argument, but I was thinking about how the trunkless look would appear ONSCREEN specifically. It's a different aesthetic when you're looking at a live human being walking around, and things that you don't think twice about in a comic book give you greater pause in a movie (why else isn't Hawkeye wearing his classic costume in the Avengers flick?).

I never minded them in live action, ever. Not on Reeves, Reeve, or Cain. And Routh's suit just looked awkward alltogether, trunks or not.

I'd say it's less a case of not being a real fan of Superman as it is a case of being too willing to accept ANYTHING just because they slap the \S/ on it. And I'm as guilty as anyone-I've read and watched plenty of garbage just because they did that. Byrne Superman, Mullet Superman, Electric Superman, Smallville. Pure crap, and I bought every issue/watched every episode. But I'm sick of accepting junk just because it has the \S/ on it.
You mean something like this?

I wouldn't say people are accepting anything, it's just a matter of personal taste. Something like this is subjective. you guys love the original costume and can't stand it, but there are worse interpretations of Superman's suit in the comics than in any movie version.

So it could be worse. I see that defence cropping up again and again. Is that the best we can expect?

I think it's different for each person. For some, it's "a matter of personal taste" -- they actually like or prefer the MOS suit; and for others, they're just going along with it because it's Superman.

If Superman's yellow belt looked more visible, and prominent on the costume, alone with those bluish looking strands around his waist and back being reduced, then I'd think the suit would look better imho.

I honestly can't wait for the trailer because to me nothing is final till I see it in motion , I have a feeling the filter he uses will make the colors look different

Yep, I bought that **** just because the \S/ was on it.

is there a superhero movie suit doesn't work on screen?
if a movie failed, it would never because of the suit design.

having said that, if tim burton / nicolas cage superman managed to be made. the suit would look cool and work well on screen too. and there would be lot of people loving the his suit too. because it looks much more cool and futuristic than MOS's. what's more if his movie a success.

but is it a 'right' suit for superman?

Maybe with you, but that's because you are a nit picky, small minded fanboy of the highest order.

First thing I look at is the S-shield on his chest.

Get over the lack of trunks, stop being a fossil.

The lack of trunks sticks out badly because everyone knows they're SUPPOSED to be there. The costume looks incomplete and therefore distracting. If it was more different overall, then it would be more of a total new costume, but since it's essentially just the old costume without the trunks, it looks off. The electric Superman costume is more respectable to me than the MOS costume as an alternative Superman suit; at least it's a bold change. The MOS suit is cowardice in action. They ditch the trunks because the kewl kidz think then people will quit making fun of Superman for keeping his underwear on the outside (they'll just make fun of something else, like the glasses on Clark Kent), but they keep the rest of the costume hoping the longtime fans will accept 80% of a Superman costume because hey, they've accepted all the other **** they've done and called Superman, right? I mean, Superman fans put up with 10 seasons of Smallville for one shirt rip, they are gonna take anything DC/WB puts out at this stage.

It's a damn shame. Superman deserves better than a sellout costume and a movie made only because of a lawsuit.
