I loathe the concept that Jor-el sends Kal-el off with an adult size Kryptonian suit......reeks of "Your destiny is pre-planned, laid out and known by me."

Another poster...or maybe in another forum...also prefers that it is home-made by Martha in that it further reinforces that it is the Kents that make Clark Superman, and not his Kryptnian physiology. As if like with STM, too much emphasis is made of some sort of pre-ordained destiny that Jor-El assigned to Kal-El, instead of being more for just survival....and his values/character from being raised a Kent are what contribute more and led to his own decision to become a hero/protector/etc. I think there's some validity to that. I don't know if it'd really make a difference to a movie audience...and they'd rather have what's 'cooler' onscreen...but as an avid fan, yeah I could see how Jor-El's presence/importance has somehow overshadowed some of Supes' earthly upbringing in the movies.

Or he's just passing down the family crest and culture in a sentimental way by giving him a piece of Kryptonian clothing. I mean that doesn't reek of manipulation but just a last minute passing down of an heirloom to his infant son.
I do think it's okay to have something as a memento to represent JorEl when the baby grows enough to understand. It's sweet. Like a dad leaving his infant son his military uniform jacket before he heads off to some final battle in which he will likely die, or what have you.

I hope not.

Superman's powers should be biologically based. he's not a "tech-based" hero like Batman or Ironman.
The suit may help enhance his natural abilities.

I think it is sort of like giving a girlfriend your sweatshirt when she goes away to college or leaving your dog with one of your t-shirts when you go to work. I agree with you. I think that is the route they will/should go.

The rocket containing baby Kal-El blasts off into the deep sea of space.....

JorEl: Farewell, my s....

Lara: Found it!

JorEl: Wh....?

Lara: The battle uniform you wanted to leave with Kal...y'know with these special functions in case of trouble.....

JorEl: That's the one?

Lara: Yeah it.....wait....where'd his halloween costume go....?

JorEl: His what?

Lara: Y'know...the cute little thing with the red boots...?

JorEl: .....um.......

Lara: ....wait, where's the baby...?

JorEl: .....oops......

Ah sentimentality.......Difference is Zod is wearing the same suit just different in color.....so it seems to me that the suit is more functional than sentimental, and as you mentioned it's used in battle. Sending along a suit intended for such a specific use implies an expected need more than just pure random sentiment.

....... the girlfriend is going to college and you give her snow boots.....you are planning on it to snow.........and you are expecting her to use the boots when it snows.

Interesting tho.....if Jor-el is bequething a battle suit to Kal-el purely as a sentimental momento of his family and of Krypton's heritage, what exactly does that say about Kryptonian culture?

Either that, or fashion variety was one area where Kryptonians lagged behind.

Like the Kryptonian plumber shows up...in tights and a cape...."What seems to be the problem, ma'am...?

And yet even in tights the crack still shows. :o

Lets make the example a bit more apt.

So if my dad puts his military uniform as an heirloom in my spacepod right before Earth blows up he expects me to fight in a war? You don't see how it can just be a final act of sentimentality?

Of course it could be.....but I am bringing a prejudice to the table based on the fact that iterations with a destiny concept for Superman have already been established, and placing a Kryptonian Battle Suit in Kal-el's starship seems to fall in line with that concept.

I don't think it's a battle suit...it looks more like...well...a jumpsuit or athletic wear...or pajamas.

I think it's basic kryptonian garb that's ultra durable and easy to clean and everyone wears in one form or another

Martha made the costume from his baby blankets in STM. Lara wraps him in the blankets, the costume is visible as he starts towards the arctic. They were subtle about it, but if you knew your Superman, you knew what it was. In fact, it's the first thing in the movie that I noticed they got right when I first saw it as a kid in 1978.

How could Martha have made it if Clark never left the FOS during Jor-el's years-long educating, at the end of which he had the costume and flew off? And if he had it beforehand when he left the farm, why would Martha make, and Clark carry around, a costume for a role he had no idea he was going to fill before he left for the arctic? Doesn't make sense.

...maybe in this reboot, Martha makes Clark his three piece business suit instead!

At least this would be plausible since there is no way she could make the Superman outfit.

Tomorrow night we will be able to say that MOS is coming out Next Year!

feels better somehow....

I'm pretty sure Clark had to leave the fortress during the time (18 yrs?) at least for a little bit...he had to go to college and get a degree to land a job...unless he got some sort of Kryptonian diploma that worked. :D

Not every incarnation gave Clark a degree. Presumably, in many incarnations, Clark had no degree and was given his job because he landed a story.

There's a line that can be heard at one point in the Donner cut of Superman II, where Jor-El says something to the effect of "Your mother Lara has sent with you three blankets, red, yellow, and blue, their protection will ensure your strength" and it was originally part of the 12 year journey scene in the fortress. In the script, it goes

"Your mother, Lara, has sent along three
blankets of red, yellow, and blue.
United in a single garment, their"

The end of it is missing though, but it probably ends the same way as in the Donner cut. It seems pretty clear that the idea was to have Jor-El instruct Clark to make the blankets into a suit.

Not that I’m defending it (‘cause when you think about it, it’s somewhat odd and problematic)…

…but it’s fairly clear from the movie that Clark was sequestered in the FOS for years. At the end of the “vision quest,” Jor-El mentions that 12 years have passed. That puts Supes at age 30 – a good (Jesus-esque :cwink:) time to start a career. Doubtful that he would have gone from the FOS and then entered Metropolis U for a four-year journalism degree.

What about the one in that movie?

They said they hired him because he's the fastest typer they've ever seen :whatever:

One of my biggest issues with both the Donner films and Smallville, is how Clark Kent even gets a look in at one of the greatest newspapers of the world without any real experience of even having a job, let alone journalism.

I mean, we can't say for definite with S:TM because we don't know what happened in offscreenville. I supposed in offscreenville he might have earned loads of experience that got him the job and they just never mentioned it.

And their ace reporter is the one who can't spell....quite an operation they're running there, right?

That's how I always saw it...that his life mainly revolved around the FOS training all those years, but he must have gone to school at least part-time and saw mom a few times. Because just being there, and no-where else, for 12 or so years straight...:wow: Training or no training...that's dangerous. :D
