1.) how do you know it was the whole audience and not simply the majority of the audience? you can't say for 100% that every single person clapped unless you were there, did a head count, and asked every single person there if they clapped or not... and i doubt you were there

2.) the audience may of clapped, but it could of been simply out of respect for Cavill, and that doesn't account for the millions of people watching at home.

one man and one show does not account for every person... that's presupposition

if you are gonna be that nit picky

then how can you say you think the general audience is gonna have a problem with the trunkless look then?

you cant:o

no, i can't... i can only go with what has happened in the past.

i look at the electric Superman suit, the SR Superman suit, the Lives suit, so on and so forth

those actually looked bad tho this suit while different still respects the material and does'nt look bad

Kind of a lose-lose....one way he's wearing underwear on the outside, the other he's naked. Probably should have gone for a more radical redesign altogether, as some of us felt way back. As it stands, I think it's still Superman enough...and the actual quality of movie will still have a greater relevance. The better the movie, the better the suit will 'look'.

Whether or not it makes him look too much like Superboy, long red pants seems like the most logical answer, although thinking about it now, that might be a bit too much red. Blue boots?

Either change it completely, or don't change it much at all, really. This may be a bit too middleground for some. Makes it feel like something's missing.

did you watch leno:cwink:

the audience applauded when cavill superman picture was shown they loved it and even leno himself said the trunks are kind of dumb and was glad they were gone
Just because the audience applauded doesn't mean they actually liked it. Not to kick against anyone's heel, but shows like that, Americans are a strange breed. They clap and cheer for everything. And yes I know my share of American citizens and no I don't claim to know everyone, but just watch shows like Leno, Oprah, Ellen Degeneres (or whatever her name is) or any other 'talk'-show. It's not just the Americans, but people tend to clap and cheer out of politeness too. There's this particular celebrity in a show and they show something he is proud of, and people don't cheer him on. That would be awkward and even I would cheer with the crowd, even though I'm not a follower, because if someone is proud of something they did or made; Who would I be to not show him/her respect...

So yeah, it doesn't mean anything.

Hey...they clap for Leno...and laugh at his jokes.....

...he'd probably get them to love the Wonder Woman pilot, too.

there are ways to make it work with out red pants or trunks

some of the concepts on here have been excellent

There are, but nothing works better than the trunks. When you see a superhero, you see a cape and trunks. By a superhero, I mean like the general idea of what a superhero looks like, not any superhero in particular. It's an archetype that was sat by Superman...and now he's not even allowed to be that archetype because the kewl kidz think trunks are lame.

in the end my best way to change the suit would be to get rid of the belt and make the trunk just some kind of red portion of a one piece blue suit

it would still be keeping with the look of red trunks but not acutallt be trunks or pants

I still think that something like this could have worked better than what we evetually got.lol

^it is just painted on trunks basically might aswell go with trunks then lol

i am talking about the new costume... and how bad it looks without trunks

yes i do. Superman is still known for wearing trunks... thats part of his iconic look.

taking away superman's trunks is like taking away santa's beard

I disagree, my fiance and my father both did not realize he wasn't wearing trunks when I showed them the new costume, I kept pressing both of them to figure out what was different. My father ended up getting it, but the lady didn't, I had to tell her, and she is someone who told me she use to watch the original Reeve movie's to death when she was younger dreaming to marry Superman one day.

Now this does not mean everyone will not notice, I'm sure most will, but the trunks are no where near as iconic as Santa's beard! I would say the "S" on Sups chest is more at the iconic level of Santa's beard.

Unless everyone out there has a crazy passion for Superman as a character, and his trunks, I don't see it being a big deal to the general audience. My older brother (35) is a Sups fan, not as big of a fan as myself, but he is your casual fan, and he has no problem with Sups going trunkless, he thinks the new costume looks cool actually.

I was against a trunkless Sups at first, but I ended up loving the new costume. The artist who is making my Statue of Cavill for me, recently told me the more he studies the new costume, the more and more impressed he is with it, it's the work of a genious in his words, and I agree.

It comes down to whether your willing to except change or not, and there are those people out there (the die hards) who will never except it.

In the end it's all about story and delivery, I seriously doubt that people will stay home from seeing an amazing movie because Superman is not wearing trunks.

Ah, but did you show them the only officially-released photo of Cavill in the costume? The area where the trunks should go is totally covered in shadow in that image, so it's not surprising that your fiance and father wouldn't have noticed anything different.

I couldn't even tell when I first saw it whether or not there were any trunks, and I think that was the point: by showing what was by all appearances a totally faithful yet modern Superman costume, the filmmakers illustrated that trunks were not essential to making the outfit recognizable. When I finally realized that there were no trunks - only confirmed by set photos - it became clear at that point that it didn't matter, because before I found out for sure, I had been totally satisfied by the costume.

It really is a perfect Superman costume - just without the trunks. I can live with that.

Exactly.

P.S. Got a Superman DVD box set for Christmas and was watching the Bugs Bunny parody cartoon Super-Rabbit on it today. If you watch the cartoon, you'll notice that Bugs' Super-Rabbit costume includes a red cape, a blue suit...and no trunks. :cwink:
