Spider-Man The Official "I Loved Raimi's Spider-Man' Thread - Part 1 of 99 Luft - - - - Part 13

I think a lot of fans thought Lizard would make sense to have but it also would still be real hard (despite, even considering after Gollum) to do the Lizard well with the tech, and the depiction we got in TASM that supported that view.
I think by that point VFX was at a place where a CGI Lizard in Raimi's SM4 could have looked incredible. After all, this was after Gollum, Davy Jones, the Na'vi in Avatar, etc. But it also would have helped if Lizard was the only CGI character in the film besides the CGI Spidey double, and even then Raimi would probably have done some of it as practical effects. I don't know how it would have went down in Raimi's SM4 with Vulture as the main villain but I've always thought that if Lizard had to share a Spider-Man movie with any other villain then a no-brainer choice would be Kraven.

I wanted Raimi to do The Lizard so goddamn bad. And from early on, too, bc the 2002 movie got me reading a lot of the early Lee/Ditko stuff.

I honestly would’ve preferred a third movie with the Lizard over Sandman/Venom/Harry’s Pseudo-Goblin.

I hate to admit it but back in 2006/2007 I was one of the s***head fans that Avi Arad warned Raimi about who wanted to see Venom in a Spider-Man movie. At the time I was happy, but happiness is fleeting when you come to the realization the final product isn't all that great. I do very much enjoy Spider-Man 3 but at the same time I wish Arad had just let Raimi do his own thing.

Why do people keep blaming Spider-Man 3 being bad on Venom being included, and not how Spider-Man's origin story (that was told perfectly fine in the first movie) was retconned and ruined in order to try and manufacture a "personal connection" between Spider-Man and The Sandman. Sam Raimi has as much responsibility for Spider-Man 3 sucking as Avi Arad and Sony do, because as far as I know that storyline was his idea.

Yeah, there are problems on almost every front as far as 3 is concerned, and bizarrely at the time, we seemed to condense it all down to “omg what a stupid dance scene.”

I never said Venom being forced on Raimi was the only problem but it would have felt much less cluttered if the only two villains were Sandman and Goblin Harry.

And yet who'd have guessed years later Gen Z would go ape**** for Emo Peter.

I really would have loved to see the lizard or and vulture in the series. I was really disappointed with Spider-Man 4 not happening: for me I really enjoyed Spider-Man 3 and I think it’s underrated.
I also wanted them to continue the series. Even if Raimi, Tobey and/or Kirsten didn't want to come back for a fourth movie I'd have preferred a recast set in the same continuity, like Batman Forever. I remember being disappointed when the news broke that they were completely rebooting Spider-Man.

Imagine your younger self’s surprise to find out that they would then reboot that reboot in four years time.

They were rushing Sam and he couldn’t choose a script that was good to him so it didn’t work out unfortunately.

Even in 2012 the concept of any incarnation of Spider-Man being incorporated into the MCU seemed impossible, much less only four years away.

I remember reading that Dylan Baker also really wanted to get into the Lizard role eventually, but that never ended up happening.
It's like Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent in Batman all over again, only just a little worse because he spent two movies under the assumption he'd be up to bat as Lizard.

What’s even crazier looking back is that Garfield landed the role in 2010 and was out by 2015. The Snyder folks act like Henry Cavill is the single most short-changed actor in film history, but at least he got a full decade-plus in his role.

I remember the days when TASM reboot was coming out and people turned against this trilogy only to go insane when they found out Tobey was coming back for NHW. Let's be honest, ALL Spider-Man fans were going insane for Raimi's Spider-Man. I'll give Watts credit, he continued on Raimi's story while book-ending it. It basically felt like Spider-Man 4 for his character.

They're just sour because Henry didn't get a triumphant return like Garfield did with No Way Home. :o

Happens almost every single time. A new adaptation of a comic book character comes out, and a lot of fans immediately declare it the best while deriding the ones that came before. Sometimes fairly, but more often than not, it's basically "new is better than old".

To be fair, if the Raimi films hadn’t ended on such a down note, I’m sure the recency bias would’ve been a bit more muted.

I remember that. Probably the most heartbreaking movie biz press release in my entire lifetime.

He had several years and from all that he couldn't come up with a story that he thought was good enough, pretty good at least OK reason to move aside ...

I remember during the development there was quite a lot of buzz that JAMES ZODIAC VANDERBILT was such a great writer who was going to make such a great and original script, not sure how much he actually ended up contributing to TASM but I think since then he has lost a lot of hype and Fincher has gotten even more of the credit for Zodiac.

I really loved the Raimi movies and would have gladly taken a fourth; though I would have preferred Kraven and Lizard as villains over Vulture and Black Cat.

But it was so exciting when they announced a reboot, and they were naming it TASM. I remember all the speculation and was so optimistic that it would be a live-action version of Ultimate Spider-Man or, even better, Spectacular Spider-Man. We’d have our Raimi trilogy, a love letter to the original Lee/Ditko days, and were about to get a "modern" Spider-Man that could coexist with the early MCU films (especially considering Avengers Tower was supposed to appear in the NYC skyline in TASM).

But, alas, it didn’t quite turn out that way. But the potential was there…
