Spider-Man The Official "I Loved Raimi's Spider-Man' Thread - Part 1 of 99 Luft - - - - Part 13

Does anyone have Sam and Ivan Raimi's very early notes on Spider-Man 3? It'd be dated 2005 or maybe 04. I used to have it on my old computer until it crashed.

It's basically an in-depth analysis of what the themes were along with mapping out the plot and how it all connects with the characters.

I went on a hunt because I had the making of book that included this (nice book altogether), and while I no longer have the book, I took a pic of that page like 7 years ago haha. Found a poor quality version which I've made as legible as possible:

^Pretty weird they wanted to go so dark so soon (focus on Peter and Mary Jane's flaws including his pride driving them apart as well as Peter wanting revenge over Flint) after Spider-Man 2 was so embraced.

Though Raimi didn't want to specifically use Venom (though he does fit with the themes) or Gwen (he would have used a different girl in her place), the story and roles, including a lot of what people dislike, seem to pretty much be what he did want to do and have.

The Uncle Ben retcon probably would have happened regardless and I doubt that would have been popular in any scenario. That said, Vulture as Sandman's cellmate is a much cleaner thing to integrate than Venom and all of its surrounding story. Sony should have just waited on Venom.

I think if Venom was going to be integrated into the story they could have went the Ultimate Comics route and make a friend of Peter's become Venom.

Obviously Ultimate Eddie Brock and Franco's Harry Osborne are not exactly the same but there's enough similarity that it could work. Plus the Eddie Brock we got in SM3 is universally disliked. Two villains on one.

You're the best! Thank you!

I'm going to definitely try to get that book now.

Best look at the original mechanical web-shooters.

In my opinion, I honestly think Raimi and Webb should've made a deal with Sony for a saga sequel other than a trilogy like similar to the Harry Potter series. A movie saga could've been better so that both directors could've expand their storylines other shoving all of them in one movie. They could end their series until Part 7 or Part 8.

That's cool, the skull prop was out there for sale a few years ago. I wish that death would have stayed in the movie. Would have been spookier and especially driven it further how that could have been Peter if he didn't let go of the suit. The creepy human/symbiote skull seems like more of a Raimi touch, too.

Nice to see more of that creepy skull. I wonder why that fate changed. Perhaps it was a little too Raimi and didn't make it past the censors.

According to IMDB, Test Audiences thought it was too traumatizing so they had to go and do reshoots which is how we ended up with what we got. The Sandman confession with his family was supposed to happen before the final fight with Venom as well.

Shame. Traumatic Venom bone death would have been so much cooler than Eddie throwing blindly himself into a pumpkin bomb disintegrating. Although it was kind of fun to see a pumpkin bomb disintegrate somebody again lol.

I really wish they would’ve released the cut of the movie that was shown to the test audiences back when they Re-Released the Trilogy on Blu-Ray/4K back in 2017 to hype up Homecoming

As much as I appreciate the Editor’s Cut I can’t help but feel somewhat robbed.

As the nerd who petitioned for Spider-Man 3.1 back in the day, I am both very grateful for the Editor's Cut, and a little disappointed by what it still omitted. I don't recall if there was ever much explanation for its release after the fact, but I followed it closely prior to release and it was first dubbed '3.1' on the Japanese listing that first announced it. I wonder if this was a translation thing, a simple title change, or perhaps that Sony intended Raimi involvement first, and he wasn't interested in any revisions.

There are quite a few things I'd still be curious to see. Honestly I don't mind Eddie's death as is, never have, but a more gruesome one would be fun to see.

Still one of my favorite teasers:

Its interesting that the black suit ripping scene had no cgi in that trailer. Was the trailer with early version of Venom officially released or did it leak? Venom looked so different in that.

I think it was leaked since there were some unfinished CG shots on it, but even then the trailer had 240p quality at best.

I think they called it 3.1 because they didn't know what to call it at the time but I knew something was up when the Run Time was shorter than the Theatrical Version.

Editor's Cut was an earlier version of the movie. Someone on the Blu-Ray.com forum (his username is Hardback247) was able to get into contact with the editor of the Spider-Man films back when the cut was first leaked on Amazon (ironically around this same time in 2017) and here's what he said:

I asked him about why the Aunt May scene was removed and this is what he said:

"It is a good scene, but we went back to an earlier version of the movie that existed before this scene was shot to create this alternate cut. In the original version of the script, Peter made up his own mind to try to make amends with Mary Jane after he rid himself of the black suit."

Why not have the scene where Flint’s family comes in during the final battle and tell him to stop fighting Spider-Man, and that Penny is incurable?

"That was cut long ago because it made the third act too slow. Plus, the goal of this cut was to go back to a version where the characters made their decisions themselves."

Were there any thoughts to make an even longer extended cut and include the other parts of the sandcastle scene and other rumored deleted scenes?

"No. This will probably be it. The big thing was fully restoring Christopher Young's great score from start to finish. The new edit was a bonus."

I’m just saying that there is so much more you could have added to this Editor’s Cut to improve the movie. Make it an actual extended cut.

"Not in my opinion. The movie is better shorter."

I also Emailed him back in February 2018 about the Editor's Cut and here was his response:

Thanks for your e-mail. It's impossible for me to answer all your questions as I don't remember all the reasons myself. All I can say is making any movie, especially at the studio level, is a long process full of many compromises. Too many people are involved and they all have their own ideas about what's best for the movie. And sometimes the ideas are bad and damaging to the movie, even though everyone thinks they are making the movie better. Therefore, I consider myself blessed to have the opportunity to correct some of these bad decisions years later in the "editor's cut" (which, by the way, was not really an editor's cut, it was just an earlier version of the movie that I thought was better than the one that was released theatrically). That's why things like the doctor scenes didn't appear in this version. Both Sam and I decided the movie would be better without them, mostly for reasons of pacing, so I did not want to reinstate them into this revised cut. The goal was not to create version of the movie that included everything that was shot, good or bad, but to restore the movie to a better version that existed before everyone started meddling with it. Right or wrong, it's my idea of that best version, and I'll take full credit (or blame) for the contents. So in that respect, maybe "editor's cut" is a valid label.
I doubt if Sony will ever want to do another extended version, and I don't think Sam would authorize it anyway.

Best wishes,

Bob Murawski
