Days of Future Past The Official JANUARY JONES/Emma Frost Thread

Awesome, thanks. Was getting worried with some of the early reviews saying she doesnt have much to do that a batlle between the two of them wouldnt take place. Glad to hear it does.

Yes I knew about that. Still doesn't explain why people say that she 'doesn't have much to do.' Perhaps that's a matter of relativity.

The psychic battle was originally going to be like that gravity defying scene in Inception. Once Vaughn saw that film, he scrapped it, but I don't know what he replaced it with instead. I hope it's better or at least just as good.

Me too. Maybe since weve seen her in that cell she is away from whats going on in the story for awhile.

Here's a snippet from a review on Emma Frost. Sounds good to me. That is definitely who she is.

A revelation is how well Emma Frost is handled. Blatant fanboy eye-candy, the skimpily-clothed and overtly sexual character is shown to be a strong survivor in Jones' hands. There are some brilliant moments of manipulation and deception, but First Class throws in some deliberate touches of sexism to remind us of the period.

Potential spoilers in the link, so don't read it for those who don't want to know. It's a well written review though. Otherwise read more: http://www.thisisfakediy.co.uk/articles/film/x-men-first-class1#ixzz1NKgtaC7S

Hey guys I found this earlier in a review :) Here's what was said about Emma Frost over at http://www.dogatemywookie.co.uk/?rev...atrical-review:

"January Jones could very easily have been the buxom blonde wearing skimpy attire just because she’s pretty but even Emma Frost seems to get a character arc stronger than the protagonists of many a film..."

I love Emma Frost as well, but a character arc for her is more than what I could have ever asked for... especially since arcs are usually saved for the main characters. I have faith!

Oh and if a character has an arc she can't just be standing around saying a line here and there ;)

I came across another review - can't remember which one - that mentions that although her outfits and sex appeal will ensure that teenage hormones keep running, ultimately Emma Frost is 'bland' and 'lacks screen presence', and does not have a backstory. But that's probably no surprise: having no backstory that is.

I don't think I would have to agree... She looks to be a strong, formidable element as far as I'm concerned.

It's always been the case in these ensemble movies that the henchmen/women don't get full backstories. It's just not possible. Mystique had one line of dialogue in X1.

Fans of the characters and their long-developing histories in the comics simply have to accept that a 2hr film doesn't have time to give us the life stories of the other characters.

Although there are fewer secondary/tertiary characters than in X3, I feel that the approach in this film validates my arguments that X3 couldn't possibly have given us full backstories on the fan-favourites introduced (Juggernaut, etc), which has been a complaint from many of those who hate the film.

It's taken us five films to get some backstory on Mystique and, even then, her origin isn't fully covered in First Class.

We'll perhaps learn more about Ms Frost next time around. Interestingly, she was going to be an old flame of Xavier in Singer's never-made version of X3, and that idea doesn't fit at all with First Class so Singer is contradicting his own overall 'vision' for the series. There are things in FC that go against all the existing films, and things that tie in to all the existing films.

I don't 'hate' the last two films for those reasons; while they seem more vibrant and more 'out there', I do because they were improperly executed, couldn't match the same level of gravitas and heart as in Singer's.

I can accept that some characters don't necessarily have to have backstories. Lady Deathstrike was great and memorable. She had presence, in my opinion, and had a certain level of pathos that I could sympathise with as well. So she doesn't need to be deep; the audience just needs a 'point of entry', if you will, to relate with her. The issue I take with that reviewer is really because he is calling her bland and lacking screen presence.

From my own accounts, watching her in behind the scenes footage, etc, I don't find that to be the case at all.

As for Mystique - oh yeah, it doesn't matter if she's not fully explored, what HAS transpired with her is just fantastic. You can tell they've really brought a lot of depth into her role.

I can't recall such a 'point of entry' for Azazel or Emma Frost. There is usually some crucial moment, as you say, that gives us an insight into motivations etc. Even in X3 we had Psylocke yelling 'They want to exterminate us'.

I read 1 negative review about Emma Frost and it was the 1st XFC review that I read. But hello Mystique wasn't that great in X1 but she got better after that, so hopefully Emma is like that too.

What goes against things from the first 2 X-Men films? Does Magneto not help Xavier build Cerebro?

I can't tell you without spoiling things, so I won't.

They are mostly things that fans would notice more than the mainstream.

:( Could you say at least that one could watch XFC, X1 and X2 and not see a big continuity discrepancy?

It's down to personal taste how seamless you think it all is. The film is a loose prequel that also serves as a sort of reinvention.

What's interesting to me is not watching those three films together (and trying to imagine Fassbender morphing into McKellen etc) but seeing how FC itself can take its own story forward, because it leaves you wanting more.

Well they can definitely fix things up with Second Class and Third Class about the continuity problems. Its not that hard.

I wouldn't say there were continuity 'problems' that need fixing. There are things that the hardcore fanbase will notice and nitpick over, like we already mentioned in X1 Xavier says he was 17 when he met Magneto.

Right but does he flat out say his age in the movie? Like "Hello I'm Charles Xavier, 24, my hobbies include knowing your secrets.." ?

I don't recall such a line, no! Just wait and see the goddam film! :woot:

So we get little insight into the way Emma Frost is, is that what you mean? I don't necessarily mean a backstory, but a reason for her being there just would suit me fine.

Well, she says something (can hardly recall it though) in the scene where she is in the cell and cuts the circle out of the glass. But, personally, I didn't feel she was very fleshed out... I'd need to see it again to be sure, a lot happens in those two hours...

Does Emma Frost wear stockings at all in this flick? I'm drooling in antici...pation
