The Dark Knight Rises The Official Jim Gordon / Gary Oldman Thread

the acting in that scene was incredible. I hope he doesnt die.

Don't you think Oscar talk is jumping the gun a little, considering we've only seen about 60 seconds of footage? :whatever:

I took it as not necessarily Oscar for TDKR, but for something by that time (which could be TDKR).. the idea is that Oldman needs an Oscar! He's a brilliant actor.

This. I reckon he'll get at least a nomination for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (and yes, I am saying this based on a trailer).

The oscars, irrelevant and political as they may be, do represent the peak of acting accolades.

Oldman definitely deserves one in that respect.

Eh. I wouldn't say he's a bad actor, but I wouldn't say I've seen him in anything that's been brilliant. Granted, I haven't seen a lot of Gary Oldman films, but I would hardly call his roles in BB, TDK, Red Riding Hood, The Book of Eli, The Unborn or Harry Potter brilliant.

Once again you put your keen and penetrating mind to the task and as usual come to the wrong conclusion.

Have you seen Sid & Nancy, Dracula, or Leon? Even JFK for that matter?

I'm not an idiot. I know what you're saying. A) Those films sucked, and he must of known it when he first read the script... Why would a brilliant actor sign on to a ****** movie? B) His role in those films, bad or not, were not brilliant. Interesting. Well-done. But they were not Christian Bale in the Fighter or Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood.

Firstly, his acting range is definitely something to take into consideration aside from focus on particular roles. He is a brilliant actor.

Secondly, I encourage you to check out his other roles to be convinced of that acting range and also that overall he does good work.
As far as i'm concerned, half the films you mention were inherently lame for various reasons - although i'm convinced Oldman's presence is likely what would make them worth watching before knowing how they would turn out. I went to see The Unborn just because of Gary Oldman and the potential for it to be a cool horror flick (it wasn't, but Oldman made me smile).

*ahem* True Romance

He out-acted almost everybody... minus Heath (who had the luxury of a showy villian performance)... in TDK.

If Halle freakin Berry deserved an oscar then Oldman's long resume is crying out for one. A nomination at least.

Because money.

Christian Bale was in Shaft.

Daniel Day Lewis was in Nine.

Brilliant actors often take less than stellar roles in ****** movies because they'd like a paycheck to CONTINUE pursuing challenging, deep roles in amazing movies.

Like Oldman's new role in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. That will be an Oscar worthy performance, I promise you that.

EDIT: And really, at this stage in Oldman's career he's basically proven to EVERYBODY that he's an amazing actor, and can do pretty much whatever he wants.

You know what Gary Oldman probably enjoys? Lots and lots of money. And, honestly, probably has fun even in those terrible movies. Not every great actor is incredibly selective in their work. Doesn't mean they aren't great.

Laurence Olivier was in Clash of the Titans (Which I love, but not exactly up to Olivier's calibre of material). Orson Welles did a voice in the bloody 80s Transformers movie.

I did not know this lol. I will have to check that out lol.

As I admitted, I haven't seen all of his on screen roles, and it sounds like I've missed some of his best work.

I also don't want people to get the impression that I think he is a bad actor. By no means.

But from what I have seen him in, and from the 60 second bed-ridden clip of TDKR, he's not exactly on my list of top contenders for best actor next year. That's all I'm saying.

Christian Bale was in Shaft.

That was kind of early in his career (2000 to be exact). He didn't have the impressive resume then to pick & choose the "meaty roles", but I'm sure he took it as a paying gig. I'd be very surprised if he took a similar role now.

I tend to think that aside from making money (which I am thinking isn't terribly important at this point with the kind of opportunities he gets) he does go for those roles because he enjoys them, and doing what you enjoy regardless only shows integrity as an actor.

Damn... even Gary Oldman blew me away with his acting in a teaser trailer.

Oscar tiiiiime!!! (Not for TDKR though clearly... the academy would NEVER!)

And The Oscar Goes To.... Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight.....

Gary Oldman is absolutely outstanding. I think the top three actors of all time (yes, I'm serious) are Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, and Gary Oldman.

Well he did choose to do Terminator: Salvation...

Probably paid for his kids Uni fees, so at least he got that out of it.
