I want a tall, athletic Luthor this time. Wright is a bit dumpy.

Wright is brilliant but I agree, need someone a bit bigger. I don't think he necessarily needs to be extremely athletic but I definitely want a Lex who is around the size of Laurence Fishburne.

Johnny Depp would be a great Lex Luthor .

Tim Burton's version was canned in '98.:o

Jason Isaacs, Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, Billy Zane, Paul Bettany or Matthew Goode

since for lex luthor it could be an older actor or a younger actor, it doesn't matter, so i'd go with just the best actor between 40ish and 60 that is just good all around and that can be serious for once... like daniel day lewis but i think i'd like to see a very interesting luthor that could be charming but can be intense...

so either sean penn or edward norton would be my picks

Yes, that's the kinda names we need in the supporting cast. A Nolan-sized cast.
If course, they might steal focus.

For some bizarre reason, I think Matt Dillon would be a great choice as Lex Luthor. He can be a real slimey bastard when he plays bad guy roles.

I think he would work well as Lex Luthor.

He honestly looks just like Gene Hackman bald.

Same. I like Sean Penn, but that manip makes him look a bit too much like Hackman.

Christopher Eccleston anyone?

Have no idea how his American accent is, but he's a terrific actor.

Penn is too old. :o

I still say Tom Hardy would have been our best choice, but unfortunately he's probably going to be in Batman 3, so unless his role there is Lex Luthor in a cameo we can forget about him being Luthor.

However, if it's a Nolan alumni we want, my left-field nomination would be Joseph Gordon Levitt. Physically he is not very imposing, but he can come across as being very intelligent and sophisticated and he can also pull off the shaved head look. He also has experience playing a villain. While Lex Luthor is a much more subtle character than Cobra Commander, Levitt has at least demonstrated that he can be evil on screen and not just a lovable geek.

Probably? Tom Hardy has been confirmed to be in TDKR by master and commander Christopher Nolan. And while JGL is a fantastic young actor, I think Luthor needs to be older, more imposing. I wouldn't cite Cobra Commander as a terribly credible role either...I'm still kinda shocked he was in that movie to begin with.

Agreed, I think Luthor should be middle aged. Joseph Gordon Levitt is a great actor but way too young and not nearly imposing enough. Luthor should command a certain presence and I don't want Superman to dwarf him either when they're in scenes together. I really just can't take a young Luthor seriously, such as Rosenbaum in Smallville.

And it just sort of struck me... there may be a small, very small, but still a chance that Luthor may not even be in this film.

If you have a middle aged Lex, then Superman should be middle aged too since Lex and Superman are the same age. And since we're apparently going with a younger Superman, I think it's about time we got a younger Lex, too. After 5 movies with a middle aged Luthor who didn't even resemble the original character, I think that it's time that we changed things up and actually followed the comic. If Superman is going to be in his 20s, then Luthor shouldn't be older than 30.
