did Variety attach any names to those roles though? it's one thing to throw out character names, it's another to throw out actress names...especially associating them with an unknown character.
QUOTE]

I forgot if they attached specific actresses to the characters but they did through out a number of actresses , and I don't think Hathaway was even on the list but I'd have to go back and look. But yes , the article threw out the characters and actresses who could be up for the roles. I tend to think as with Selina Kyle , all the actresses are trying out for one role:Lois Lane. A few of them may be blonde but we have to remember , the last actress who played Lois, Kate Boseworth, was also a blonde, but she wore a wig.

Another example is that everyone assumed Stone was playing MJ because she usually has red hair. That's why i'm not gonna jump on this no Lois train without an offical announcement . The web has been getting all kinds of facts wrong with Spiderman , Batman, and Superman.

oic...thanks for that info Frodo Baggins of the Shire!

They said naomi watts and eva green were all but officially cast in the parts.
well, i kinda hope they're right about this scoop. as much as i want to see Lois done properly, this actually might be the best move to keep Lois interesting. she can be introduced halfway through the movie so her character can develop in a potential sequel and still have plenty to do in a third movie. it reduces the risk of her character becoming stale in a third film.

And I find it hard to believe they'll go with both unknowns for supes and lois.
i'm with you. i think they'll be going with a fairly accomplished actress.

I just hope the LA Times' Hero Complex will shine a light on things. I have a feeling more or less, it won't be about casting but more of an interview with either Zack Synder, David Goyer or Henry Cavill himself..

Diane Kruger all the way as either Kal El's Kryptonian mother Lara or as Daily Planet gossip columnist Cat Grant or as Lex Luthors bodyguard Mercy!

Make it happen Snyder cast Kruger in any one of those roles above.

Lois Lane or not, I want Diane Kruger in this film. BTW guys, chill out a bit on the no Lois thing, the article doesn't say she's not in the film, but I wouldn't put it past the writers to have made her part minimal for the first film, and if there's a second expand her role. Deep breaths in.......................now relax. Remember it's not the amount of screen time that matters, it's what part in the story the character plays. Lois might only play a small part, but it could be a vital to Clark and the story. Just chill guys.

I'm with you. I would love to see Diane Kruger in this film.

I think she will wind up playing Lara, Cat Grant or Mercy. I'm hoping that it is as Kal El's Kryptonian mother Lara. :word:

I wonder if Biel will be popping up? I still remember that report that got taken off the internet about her as a lead candidate/possibly Lois.

I actually would stay away from her, but it did kind of make sense as a WB choice in some ways.

The more I think about a made up character the more I accept and like it. Everyone knows that Superman and Lois Lane end up together in the end so even if they don't emphasize their relationship in the first movie I don't think it would really cause much confusion. I do want Lois to be in the movie but if she sort of took the backseat for this film it wouldn't kill me. Another benefit would be that it would help the general audience realize that this movie is in no way connected to any of the films before it.

Diane Kruger would make a great LARA.

Personally, I LOVE this news. No Lois Lane = No major romantic subplot. It's either going to be a Rachel Dawes type situation OR focusing on Jor-El/Lara.

This could also suggest a small amount of Lois Lane could mean it will be a good 45 minutes to an hour before seeing Cavill in the actual Superman costume. I actually would love that.

Diane Kruger, Alice Eve and Rosemond Pike are all older than Cavill.

That makes me thing they could be in the running for Lara, a love interest for whoever is playing Jor-El.

It could definitely be a different take to play up the huge Kryptonian story.

I'm definitely getting a Rachel Dawes type feeling with this news. We all know Superman eventually gets with Lois, we've seen that story before, a curve ball is exactly what the character needs to rejuvenate it and get the ball rolling. Like with Nolan's Batman you don't need to start off with the status quo, but it's important to finish with it.

There will be a romantic subplot. It might not dominate the movie, but it will definitely be there. Cavill will attract female viewers on his own, there's no doubt... but romance will surely bring more.

And you could argue that the romantic approach didn't work for Superman Returns, but that felt more like a jealous old boyfriend/stalker thing than anything else.

eve, kruger, and rosamund's ages don't matter, as they'll likely only appear in this movie. unless they're playing someone like lana lang. even then though...

Essentially Lana would serve as Rachel though right?
but if this blonde character is the lead one and she ends up being Lana, that would require spending a significant amount of time in Smallville.

If the film is origin based, even with Lana it doesn't mean time would be spent in Smallville. Hint: Clark travels the world. He learns other languages and cultures quickly, he also develops his powers and decision making abilities, however he still come back to Lana to share what is going on.

Everything is just rumors. Ill rather wait for something official. The only thing thats official is that henry cavill will play superman, other than that people can only speculate.

I don't care how long it takes for Clark to get around to wearing the suit as long as it happens like this

Since the What's Playing article made it a point that none of the actresses listed are American, I assume we're not talking about Lana as the main lead if she's in the film at all. Pretty much the same position as Lois as far as we know.

I'm guessing this unknown female character will be someone Clark had some relationship with between Lana back in Smallville and Lois in Metropolis. Which city or cities this happens? We don't know yet. We could be dealing with a Lori Lemaris type of situation.

With this, over the course of the film(s), we can see Clark grow not only simply in the aspects of natural growth as a person or a superhero, but in his relationship with loved ones rather than sticking with only one girl or pining over her all the time.

Of course this could all be wrong and moot. Just simple speculation.

How does not being american disqualify them for playing lana?

Well, I find the character pretty limiting since she's mostly "the girl from back home." If reports are true of going a similar route with Birthright, I'd say it's more likely that the female lead is someone he meets outside of Smallville and may not be an American character.

because there is already a huge stink about Superman being played by a Brit...and all the woman rumored to be on the short list for Lois are American (none of them are European). not to mention, Diane Kruger has yet to show that she can speak with an American accent.
