I'm playing MGS3 Subsistence again, and I finally timed the opening 3.5 hrs of the game (from opening cutscene to the end of Naked Snake and Eva's first codec conversation, sans Para-Medic movie trivia). Guess how much of that was approximately gameplay. I guessed 45 min, but it turned out to be half an hour more than that (I replayed the opening whilst skipping all the cutscenes and codec calls). Still, a ratio of gameplay to cutscenes should be nowhere near 1:2. Everyone already knows MGS3 takes its sweet time to get going, but I just felt like sharing some numbers. After a couple of days I plan on pulling a Fenris and explaining why Subsistence is my favorite MGS (full disclosure: I have only played MGS 2-4, and I started the series by playing the PS2 games in reverse order), when I'm actually awake and free to do so.
Also, MGS3 is chock full of awesome scenes, particularly any where there is CQC involved, or Naked getting his hand/arm/eye injured. Not to mention the 2nd time Naked makes Ocelot look like a fool, saying that he doesn't have what it takes to kill him, and then Ocelot pulled the trigger to no avail. Snake's a boss for being able to know how many shots other people have left in their weapons. Also, when Eva asked Snake why he stopped her from killing Ocelot, if he'd said something like "because he's in the next 3 games so I can't let you create a time paradox" instead of "he's still young", that would have made for an excellent joke cutscene.
