Can anyone tell me why Big Boss has that large scar on his chest?

Edit: Also, why is it that once captured, enemy soldiers are suddenly on my side?

well in the world of espionage most people switch sides after you've caught them and convince them(reason very) to do so and they always pushed metal Gear is that (well the soldier version) though their(soldiers) usually hard to convince unless their merc's (which all it will take is money to switch sides.) And but most depending might or might not, depends on what their goals in life are besides their job(if their not the soldier type and may just want out of the life ) or try to make some sort of deal as long as they stay breathing. most soldier don't like keeping or being prisoner's so once they have what they want from you info wise. well I'm sure you know the rest. yeah they don't show it in the game. but that's why it's a game. might not be fun to see all that in the makers minds. If that last question about switching sides was rhetorical, then just ignore it . hehe

The scar symbolizes the title of "Boss" I believe. It passes from The Boss to Naked Snake at the end of Snake Eater. Like, the "scar" leaves the Boss and goes to Naked Snake.

As far as the enemies switching sides thing goes, that seems like a missed opportunity for Big Boss to do something shady like send them to a "reeducation camp" camp or something. I mean he has to become kind of bad guy at some point.

There is a brig , prison cell for anyone who does not switch sides with big boss. It will take a few days in the cell for them to change their minds and defect to big boss.

That scar actually gets explained during the story, it's an interesting little plot point...

Yeah, the scar thing is...weird. The MGS3 stuff is certainly still in the supernatural category. The thing slithered off of The Boss' chest and onto Big Boss' in some cutscene I saw.

But, then that scar on his chest serves as an actual practical plot point (like sexton said).

Just another live action video.

Also metalgearsolid.com/rising has been updated.

I just started playing Peace Walker, seems pretty cool so far by the way, but is there any circumstance where you don't want to just hit auto assign on your dudes at the base?

The real organisation comes from when your base is filling up and you have to fire troops. It's a throwaway mechanic up until then, pretty much.

I still need to finish Portable Ops. It's what slowed down my intended run through the series

Now they NEED to have Raiden say, "dead or alive, you're coming with me."

I haven't played any of the portable versions of Metal Gear, but from playing the big four I get the impression that they're largely focusing on the idealist side of him. I think that's fine, it's more interesting to muddy the waters and paint of the bad guys in a better light, but it's easy to forget that he did switch sides at one point (which many Metal Gear fans will have never experienced first hand).

I think it would be better if they told the story of how Big Boss became the villain from the first Metal Gear game so they don't devalue his status as one of the series villains.

I'm actually beginning to think Kojima wants Rising to fail, with the almost nonexistent marketing this games getting and the fact that they keep stating its getting a 2012 release date, it doesn't look good. If I wasn't a huge Metal Gear fan I would have completely forgotten about this.

Nonexistent? What are these videos and website updates about?

Too little, too late in my opinion, we still don't know much about the gameplay other than vaguely thinking that it might be like bayonetta because it's Platinum. I think KojiPro really dropped the ball on this one.

There's no reason for Kojima to set this up to fail when he could have dumped the project entirely but he didn't. That to me shows that he still does want this project to do well otherwise he wouldn't be putting his face out for it so much.

He can't be trying all that hard now can he?
Typical marketing goes as such:
Teaser-Announcement>Trailer>Preview>trade show>in depth preview>final ad campaign>release.
The fact Is that there is a significant amount of gamers who have gone almost a year with **** all information about this project.
Anyway you cut it (heh pun) its still been poorly handled.

And when they DO get something... They'll complain about it.

Gamers.

Yeah, he wouldn't let it go on after scraping the original Rising concept. It would make no sense to tank it at this stage, he would have just let it die then.

The game doesn't launch for several months. They're clearly gearing up for some kind of media and/or info dump, plus E3 is right around the corner. Relax, let them worry about marketing the game.

we still don't know much about the gameplay

You hit things with your sword. You cut things with your sword. There are multiple weapons in the game. You can grapple and throw enemies. You can perform wall-runs and do Vanquish-esque sliding moves. You will go up against a variety of enemies of various sizes with varying abilities.

He can't be trying all that hard now can he?
Typical marketing goes as such:
Teaser-Announcement>Trailer>Preview>trade show>in depth preview>final ad campaign>release.

By the time the game comes out, the marketing cycle will have been: teaser > announcement > previews > trade show (E3 2009) > previews > trade show (E3 2010) > trade show (TGS 2010) > silence > teaser > consumer show (Spike VGAs 2011) > previews > teaser (this is where we are right now) > previews? > trade show (E3 2012) > previews > final ad campaign > release.

So yeah, once this thing is out, it will have gotten far more media coverage than many other games out there.
