The Official Metal Gear Thread - Part 7

The highest rank is named after one of the main characters.

Doesn't seem like a huge leap really.

It's a huge leap. It's like saying there's a canon score on Pac-Man. Ranks are just scores; there's no relation to the story.

Well then your pretty much in a T3 situation:

Tough ******* Tron

I have no idea what this is supposed to mean.

You're playing the game as a maniacal nuclear terrorist who murders.

You had to kill the first three too.

Big Boss can murder all he wants, but I still want the option to play non-lethally through the game like I always have had. I don't get what the problem is with this.

Pac Man= continual gameplay no matter what

Metal Gear= defined ending with rank showing how well you did, the best being a playable character.

Yeah. Same thing.

Tough luck.

If the game were lethal only, it's because Kojima has deemed it must be especially since you're playing as a bad guy. Does it bother you you can't kill people in Batman? Or sports games?

Also you haven't always played non-lethally. It's only an option for 4/7 games.

The horn gets bigger :funny:.

And this is the Big Boss I've been waiting to see. Stark-raving mad.

Yeah. Same thing.

The type of game doesn't matter to scores at all. So, yes, the exact same.

Tough luck.

My luck is never tough. Plus, we don't even know if it's a thing or not, so I don't know why you're saying this.

Missing the point. It's how I chose to play, and I want to keep that option. It doesn't matter what Big Boss does in the story. If Big Boss kills in cutscenes, or if there's a sequence where you're force to kill, I mean okay. But, in general, I've always chosen to play that through the general gameplay sequences and would be disappointed if were taken away just...cause? All these other examples you give make no sense in the context of the argument.

Really, just your whole argument doesn't make much sense to me. The gameplay and story do not, and have never really, had that direct a correlation. It doesn't matter that Big Boss is going to be a killer or whatever. That doesn't really mean that me, as the player, has to have options removed.

Also you haven't always played non-lethally. It's only an option for 4/7 games.

Let's not nitpick. It's become a standard thing for so long that you know what I meant. I don't feel the need to write "when I could" after everything.

So now he's called Venom Snake, not Punished Snake?

V takes on a new meaning. Victory, Peace, 5, and now Venom. "V has come to" definitely refers to Snake.

That's what I was thinking as well. That trailer was totally crazy. This is not the Big Boss we played in GZ anymore. The dude lost it.

Also, I'm a few hours in MGS 3. I just met Eva in the place we met Sokolov the first time. I love the running gag of Ocelot acting like he's boss, only to be beaten like a freaking rookie. The cutscenes are really long in this one, way longer than the ones of MGS 2. To think they are even longer in MGS 4.... But since they are so good, I'm not complaining.

I was kinda surprised though, when Snake beat Ocelot on his own in a cutscene, instead of letting me beat the punk. Talk about an easy trophy to get! Also, I made a video of GZ, and I'm very proud of it. As soon as the ps4 allow us to put our videos on youtube (which should be soon now) i'll put it here. It's a funny video, I'm playing like a bull, using every stuff possible to beat the enemy, like throwing a soldier on his pals, or ko'ing one with a clip of ammo.

Course it is.

I never said the game was lethal only. I said it seems plausible there's incentive to kill.

If it were you could always just not engage anyone. By y'know... sneaking.

Solid Snake can only kill in MGS1. Liquid Snake "You enjoy all the killing, that's why".

The gameplay itself wouldn't actually change. Aiming stays the same, shooting stays the same, the NPC going down stays the same, abducting the body stays the same.

Let's not nitpick. It's become a standard thing for so long that you know what I meant. I don't feel the need to write "when I could" after everything.

The alert system has been in position longer and that's gone. And that's an actual gameplay mechanic.

Course it is.

You can be snide all you want, but it's the truth. It's just a score at the end of the game. Unless you really think that they gave Snake the title of Big Boss at the end of every game off screen.

I never said the game was lethal only. I said it seems plausible there's incentive to kill.

Well, then I don't know what you were trying to say with "tough luck" then.

If it were you could always just not engage anyone. By y'know... sneaking.

Okay? Sneaking is part of what I do, it's part of playing non-lethally. Not like that really matters to the point, though.

The gameplay itself wouldn't actually change. Aiming stays the same, shooting stays the same, the NPC going down stays the same, abducting the body stays the same.

Never said it would change any of that, did I? It's just a aspect of choice that I prefer to keep. I never said that it was going to be some game altering thing, as you seem to have taken it. But it's still a choice, something that the player can chose to do, and I see no reason to take that away for some kind of psuedo-meta correlation between gameplay and story that the games haven't force in a long time.

The alert system has been in position longer and that's gone. And that's an actual gameplay mechanic.

Well, that doesn't really make any difference to what I said there, but where did you read there would be no alerts in TPP? I've only played the side ops in GZ, and there were alerts.

I'm friend with Kojima's gardener, and he told me truth about Chico and Quiet. Chico is NOT Quiet. But Kojiùma intends to introduce time travel in this game, and quiet is really Chico's mother coming from the past.

That explains quite a lot.

So your complaint can still be summed up as "I don't want to do something I'm not be forces to do".

You got the same alert system from the other games?! You need to return your game, it's faulty.

Chico = Quiet began on 4chan as a joke because of the serious hypothesis of "Kazelot".

No idea why the joke one got traction though.

I can see you're not even trying to discuss anything now.

Well, yeah, what's different about it? I mean, the HUD isn't there, so you don't see it go from red to yellow to blank, but the guards goes through the same phases as always, I thought. There's the red alert of being seen and in the open, followed by the passive stage where they're looking while you're trying to hide, and then back to regular patrol.

And I'd prefer you answer it without all the condescending snide bull****, and if you can't, just leave the answer to someone else.

Were you ever really "scolded" for killing people in previous games? You got better rankings for non-lethal and stuff, but the game itself didn't really punish you for being lethal. I would be disappointed if there wasn't a non-lethal option, if that's what you're getting at.

Your rank is often diminished a decent amount for killing people. I'm fine with non lethal stuff being there but if this is Big Boss's DARKSIDE moment.. Let me go dark side. Don't slap my wrist because I shot a guy in the head rather than shooting him in the butt with my stun dart.

I mean people shouldn't be punished or feel they HAVE to kill people in this one either, but still.. I want Big Boss to not give a crap about the lives he's taking at this point.. I want to feel like Boss feels he deserves this.. this vengeance.

Hasn't Kojima already said you can choose whether or not characters live or die in Phantom Pain?

Remember how Big Boss is supposed to represent an oni (japanese mythological ogre/demon)?

In Japanese mythology there is a story about two ogres: a red ogre and a blue ogre. The two are the closest of friends but the blue ogre wishes to befriend humans, who are scared of him and want to drive him away.

To help the blue ogre, the red ogre attacks the village and the village is saved by the blue ogre. Still best friends, the red ogre tells the blue ogre they can no longer be seen together, because the humans will lose their faith in thr blue ogre.

Perhaps this explains the split between Kaz and Boss, representing the blue and red ogres respectively.

Hasn't Kojima already said you can choose whether or not characters live or die in Phantom Pain?

I don't think that was in reference to lethal or non-lethal gameplay, but after main characters dying within the story. I mean, I think it's ********, but I do believe that's what he was talking about.

I just realized how ****ed up it would be if Big Boss uses memorial diamonds to finance Outer Heaven.

Selling the remains of your fallen comrades? Can we say dark ****?

Oy, I think I need to suck it up and play/watch Peace Walker.
