SR may be a good and beautiful movie. Unfortunately, money talks here. And the truth is the movie wasn't as successful as WB expected.

Wow...I think Horn, Robinov and Lin were idiotic in the first place for having unrealistic spiderman type of box office expectations from the get go.

Thats there own damn fault.....

so a restart will be? fix the mistakes of SR and MOS will be huge, just as big as any restart

You really don't know that. Plus, sequels usually make less than the first parts. I want a sequel as much as you do. But we have to admit everyday that passes it looks we get more bad news than good news about MOS. And the problem here is that many people that watched SR didn't like it, and won't bother to watch a sequel.

Agreed. IMO, SR could have been done with a 100 - 150 million budget. It doesn't look and feels like a 200 - 230 million movie.

Superman as a movie or character didn't have to prove anything to start with. The budget should have been less.

the more I think about it they are preparing to tell us that Singer is leaving, they're just easing the blow. If that's the case then I'll view SR as the third act to Donner's Superman 1 and 2.

Same here.

that's a good way of looking at it

Drexx,

"Lol, what was the ounce of logic behind this gem? You don't make 400 million (do I even need to mention how HUGE that is?) without being immensely popular amongst the crowd. If the film was crap, it would have dropped significantly. Plain and simple."

Episode I made 431 million dollars. I love the film but would you call that film popular amongst audiences, Drexx?

How do you know that, box office is not a measure, it has very good ratings on yahoo and rotten tomatoe, the only people who seem to hate it are people on the internet, and they will still go see it in theaters and by no means the general movie going audience

Box office is a measure, to the studios.

Showtime,

That's the problem with the studios right there....

I think reaction from the core fans matter to the studios as well. If they see the core fans split, they've got to have a bad feeling about it...it certainly can't be a good sign.

It matters only because if they listen to the fans, it means more fans are happy, which lead to better word of mouth and repeat viewings.

This leads too...bigger box office receipts.

Bottomline.

No, doubt. Just pointing out that a split of core fans can be seen as an idicator for BO potential or explanation for low box office. You'll never see, "Hey, fans were split! Let's do a sequel EXACTLY the same way!"

If the fans were split just as they are today, and Superman Returns made 500million WW, you think the sequel would still be up in the air? :cwink:

Indeed. Look no further then then Fantastic Four which , despite mostly negative reviews and with many comic boog fans outright hating it , still got a sequel

I get the strange feeling that comicbook heroes are at the end of their cycle and Anime is starting up with Robotech, Astroboy, G-Force.

I personally don't think TDK will get a sequel, and TIH won't explode back like Marvel hopes. Iron Man will do great though. Hellboy gets a sequel and SR doesn't? "What kind of world are we living in..?"-Jack Nicholson

I think the split indicates potential/ faith in a sequel in the same direction. If it made 500 and the fans were split WB would still have to re-think it. It's about potential for the next film. No matter how much a first film made, if there are indcations that the core fan base is not interested in what comes next, then a studio will certainly move more slowly.

Think about Spider-Man 3. THere is a contingent of fans that did not like it and it has certainly turned off a number of them. There is talk of SM4. But the reaction from the fans, despite huge box office was not overwhelmingly positive. While it contains bigger issues, like director, cast etc.... It's not like SM4 is a go already. IF we get a SM4 with Raimi and Maguire etc... It will be a different kind of film than 3 or 2, because they will have learned something from SM3- despite huge initial BO, fans are looking for something different in another outing.

What about Watchmen, The Spirit and Wolverine?

Despite being "The WOrld's Greatest Comic Magazine" FF is not the crossover concept that Superman is. I think studio expectations for FF were met, plus they felt they could do a better film in a sequel, and I think they did.

The problem is that the world in which SR exists is a millstone to future films in and of itself. FF just needed to be a better film, SR has a conceptual flaw inherent in it's approach to the character and his world.
