Superman Returns New Dougherty and Harris Interview

I hope these two stay far far away from Superman from now on. Collectively they are the three most incompetent people to be working on Superman. By the looks of this movie they just have no clue at all.

Again, MOST people think the movie was good and many, many think it was great.

So you should keep in mind that when you say things like this, you're speaking for the vocal minority and nothing more.

To Steelsheen, you OBVIOUSLY did NOT like the movie to be spitting out the crap you are. Let's not pretend, eh? I have my own issues with the movie, but I still think Singer and co. did a good job with it. I certainly do not want to strangle any of them, nor do I think Singer should be banned from future Superman movies. Just the opposite, actually.

Uh, yeah... I like Batman, but Emo is overused, worse than Goth.

So what now, he can't express his opinion because he represents what you think of as a minority?

I personally liked the movie, hey it's Superman - the biggest hero I know. BUT - the movie was not epic, not a legendary movie like the first one. And what makes this movie a 7 and not a 10 is because of the screenwriters. They had a great concept, cast a great Superman and Lex, but the main villain story and the pacing of the movie was no success. They did the work of a slob. No perfection and lack of creative touch.

I think an extended version will be even better, but it wil not be a legendary movie that either.

The writers did not do a good enough job. At all!

Why would Superman go away right after he tells the President he would not forsake his duties one more time (end of Superman II). Why did he not tell Lois, this is Superman for christ sake! And just how was he able to lift an island when he was infected with kryptonite? He should not be able to walk. They could have done more with the Lex beating Superman (why not let him be beaten in public, THAT would have made an impact on the audience. Why not let Lex tell him that he has a son etc.)
The whole Krypton island thing was pretty lame. Even Atom-man and the stupid computer in Superman III was more creative then just another land scheme by Luthor. Why not let Lex be more like the businness genious he is in Smallville? I loved Kevin Spacey, he did a good job, but the Lex character is far more interesting in Smallville. They should have him running for governor in SR. THAT would be a nice change for Superman to adapt to (Hey, when Arnold can, clearly the worlds greatest criminal mind can).

They lack the creative touch and they are just not capable enough for the job. It was clear already in X2 (what saved that movie was the Wolverine side-story which already was written by other Marvel writers).

ha.... while watching the movie, it actually occured to me that Lois might of been better being 40-something and that Supes hadn't aged a day (might of been a good way to get a more appealing actress... Courtney Cox perhaps?) Its funny that it was an angle they actually discussed. I'd love to hear what other far-fetched ideas they played around with.

Great article, thanks for posting!

If most people thought this movie was as epic as you seem to think it was it wouldn't be staring a huge loss in the face and an ass kicking by pirates this weekend. Thank you for playing.

Lord of the Rings, Fellowship of the Ring (a far more epic movie) earned less than Superman Returns did in 7 days...

...people ARE allowed to have their own opinions, there's no need for you to try to convince them otherwise.

LMAO perhaps you should follow your own advice here because you seem to have to either downplay anything bad said about the movie or outright attack peoples opinions that think it was a bad movie.:down

you must be getting me confused with someone else. i've never tried to presuade anyone from having their opinion. i HAVE stated my opinion as opposed to their opinion but i don't go around making smartass comments like "you must be blind" and "are you crazy?" i simply state my opinion about the movie....not my opinion about the person.

whatever. i dont have to prove myself to you. my review is on my sig if you have any qualms about how much i like/ dislike this movie. if you think i'm spitting crap about a movie i say i like you should try reading my reviews of movies that i hate (if i even bother with a review).

to me everyone is entitled to an opinion, no matter how extreme they may be on either side of the spectrum. this place is for a discussion about the movie, about what one likes or doesnt like about it. if you cant take the heat, get out of the kitchen.

If I met those dudes i would say "Hey I wish I had your job. I'm jealous."
Then I would say, "Did you guys every read a Superman Book?"

hey i liked the movie. i've seen it 4x already. but just because i like something doesnt mean i'm blind to its faults.

and dont worry, i dont ask any of you guys to strangle Singer, like the movie or not. i will take the sordid task right by my lonesome.

You and I are of the same mind Steel. I've seen it 3 times (soon to be 4) liked it...but was bothered by the faults in much the same way...so I'll help ya :D

UMMM posting after every negitive post trying to refute it is trying to force your opinion on people and trying to spin that as not forcing your opinion on people is classic.
And anyone can easily search your posts and see you do alot of refuting any negative posts.

Just because I'd love their job doesn't mean I wasn't rooting for them to make a great movie. They wrote a bland story.

I think that the script on paper looked really good. It just didn't pan out the way it should of.

I thought making Superman a 'savior' was too blunt for me. It creates all of these contridicitions and makes you question everything about Superman. Why does he stay in Metropolis? Why does he refer himself as a savior (kinda cocky)? If they were going for a Jesus angle, I wished it was more subtle.

we can we lay off emo? I was emo back in high school. Thankfully now, I'm INDIE!

Seriously though, emo chicks are hot. Give them some credit.

EMO is the word....let's keep it in fashion. Surely that's going to be the only way to describe the sequel if there is no action :)

Superman Returns in someways reminds me of the Hulk, though the backlash wasn't as great: A movie that tried (and suceeded in some parts) to be more than a comic book movie. Something more spiritual...

The issue is that sometimes the filmmakers try TOO HARD to be something that they're not, and result is sometimes lukewarm. Just like Hulk and Superman Returns.

When he called himself a savior it wasn't cocky. He SAVES people. Savior: person who saves.

It doesn't always mean the next Jesus Christ.

Well, Singer, Doherty and Harris did come up with the whole concept behind Superman Returns while they were in Hawaii together.

Okay.

One who is openly gay and the other two supposedly gay.

Figure out the rest.

That "vacation" may have prompted a lot of emotional thinking for the writers to develop their EMO Superman.

I've always had a feeling that the writers were gay. It was just..pretty obvious. I'm not judging or anything. It's just a weird facination.

One time I was being hit on by a gay guy. What? I'm good looking, I'm sorry! I went to my girlfriend's house to tell her how much I love her. Then we made some love.

That's the spirit! :)

Unfortunately for Harris and Doherty (or Singer), there wasn't a "girlfriend" to go home to.

So they decided to bed the gay guy who hit on them.

LOL.

just plain interesting!

I heard that Singer is a party animal in West Hollywood.....I heard...mind you!!!

It's so funny to hear a bunch of fanboys moan about getting rid of Singer. That really is ridiculous. I love how most people here think so highly of their writing and film producing skills that they presume to degrade a man who started the superhero film reniasance. I am glad not to make an ass of myself like that. SR is far above many other superhero films, and certainly above X3. I am not so hyperactive that I can't appreciate a personal emotional journey into Superman lore. It was a film that I enjoy the more I see it ,and it had the right amount of action. My ONLY complaint with the film is the missing scenes. I believe an extended cut of SR with all the journey to Krypton and the farm scenes will be an even stronger film. So no I love SR it is a perfect building block for the future films. Mike and Dan wrote a fantastic story which is built off of hundreds of Superman vs. Luthor confrontations. Routh's Superman is more in touch with the characters roots than the most current incarnations (Smallville, Lois and Clark) Bring on the sequel, I'll be there as well as everyone that bothers to post on these boards no matter how much they fain disinterest, and that is a fact!
