Caleb Landry Jones will play the Banshee in 20th Century Fox's origins pic "X-Men: First Class," marking the first time the mutant has been introduced to the bigscreen franchise.

And in a second key casting, Nicholas Hoult will play the Beast.

James MacAvoy and Michael Fassbender topline "First Class," directed by Matthew Vaughn.

Conceived by Bryan Singer and written by Jane Goldman, "First Class" introduces Charles Xavier (MacAvoy) and Erik Lensherr (Fassbender) as young men, when discovering their powers for the first time and before taking the names Professor X and Magneto, respectively.

Caleb stars in David Fincher's upcoming "The Social Network," from Sony, and Eli Roth's "The Last Exorcism," from Lionsgate. Previous credits include "No Country for Old Men" and CBS pilot "Gimme Shelter," from producer John Wells.

Fox declined comment.

this is good he is a great actor i just saw him in A Single Man

Meh, I think it's going to be weird seeing a McCoy/Beast this young. I know in the original comics they were all supposed to be teens but they sure as hell didn't draw him looking like one before his accident.

Well, the guy is like 20 or so..about the same age as Aaron Johnson right? Hank was known to be the oldest of the group, but not by much.

It'll be alright--it's hard to tell by the pictures how they'll portray their ages against their real ages.

Either way, I think I'll wait another week before I believe in this..

In relation to Johnson's age, Hoult doesn't exactly line up with Beast's quip to Wolverine, "I've been fighting for mutant rights since before you had claws"... but I'm okay with that.

I don't know how I feel about this. How hard is it to find a young Kelsey Grammar????

It's just sad thinking that Kelsey Grammer got only one shot to play Beast and it was in a half assed film. I thought he was absolutely perfect in the role. I understand they're going for a younger group in First Class so I knew Grammer wouldn't be asked to come back but it's saddening.

This is fantastic news Hoult is one hell of an actor. Really enjoyed his early performance in About A Boy and I've yet to see A Single Man so I'll probably check that out as I've had it in my watch list anyway.

He can be very likable something Dr. Hank McCoy must be. I think he'll nail the role.

Fox/Vaughn are really outdoing themselves with the casting.

This guys got a nice looking resume...

Hoult is a great actor.

X-men fans are in for a treat.

He's probably one of the top up and coming UK actors.

Could a moderator please change the title of this thread to "The Official Nicholas Hoult/Beast Thread" as the casting news was already posted in the casting threads? Thanks.

I first saw Nicholas Hoult on Skins and since then, I've known he will be perfect for a Marvel film. At first I had him pictured as Harry Osborn in the Spidey remake but this is perfect.

I can also see him as Light Yagami in a Death Note movie :woot:

Done.

He's easily one of my new favorite actors. Im excited for this news

I don't think Cyke and Jean will be in this unless they are kids. Beast is too young... also is Emma Frost confirmed? Best save the staple characters for a sequel to maintain interest. I'd just focus on Magneto and Xavier.

Yes, she is. And Cyke and Jean have to be in this. They're two of the main characters.

Oh yeah Alice Eve right??? Just that Beast was a lot older than everyone else in the trilogy. It's the **** like this that makes me believe they are completely scrapping continuity and starting over. I can't buy this as a prequel if there are glaring inconsistencies with the ages and time frames of these characters from Wolverine and the OT, but to each his own.

Well, it's never really clear how old Beast could be in X3. He could be anywhere from 35 to 55. With all that makeup, it's hard to tell.

and he couldn't possibly be that much older than everywhere else and still flipping around and everything.. :p Like I pointed out, we still don't have any confirmation on the rest of the characters like Cyclops, Jean,...etc. He may turn out to be the oldest of the group by the time this is all confirmed.

Hank McCoy was a key political figure. Yeah there are young studs in the White House, but it was pretty obvious that he had AT LEAST 5-10 years on the rest of the X-Men. He seemed like more a contemporary to Xavier than to Cyclops or Jean. I realize audiences won't get wrapped up in that, but again, what is the time frame they are working in here for a so called prequel? McAvoy probably has only a decade on these actors and that is fine with someone like Beast, but he has to have more than a decade on Jean and Cyke. That's just painfully obvious to me. Yeah the movie magic and makeup, but then why not go for a seasoned actor for Beast if he is eventually going to be the blue fur ball anyway? Of course they cast some like Alice Eve who is basically the same age as McAvoy so I am thinking Wolverine is definitely out the door. My thing is, even if Angel, Rogue and other characters that came later in the series don't show up here, I still think it can be a reboot that simply chooses not to recycle those characters.

I agree---but what makes you think that this is ruining the continuity so far?

I know it's easier to make older actors appear younger, but even though Hoult is barely 20 years old, I think they have many tools at their disposal if they wanted to age him up a little.

Lord knows he's hot (thank you A Single Man for those extended nude scenes), but he just doesn't seem like a correct fit for the part. I don't know.

He is talented. We shall see.

It's somewhat ironic that Fox has said they're releasing misinformation and that Nicholas Hoult is playing Beast in the same day because not too long ago, I suggested Nicholas Hoult for Proteus.

Just saying.
