So, is this Instant Game thing part of PS+, or is a separate purchase? I've read stuff about it, but I'm not sure on that.
Part of PS+.

Every week or so you have the ability to download free games they announce in the IGC which you're entitled to as long as you are subscribed to PS+.

Ah, I see. So, the $49.99 is just what having PS+ totals to at the end of the year?

No, its an upfront fee. You either pay $18 for 3 months or $50 for a year.

One Year of PlayStation Plus Value In Free Games: $1854.86

psplus-epeen.jpg

Sony is celebrating one full year of PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection, and posted the image above showcasing all 64 free games offered since Instant Game Collection launched.

That's a lot of games for subscribing to PlayStation Plus for just $49.99 a year. This got me wondering... just how much does that $49.99 get you in value? Now that I had all of the free games offered right before my very eyes, a little bit of lazy Googling and lazier mathematics through an Excel spreadsheet I whipped up gave me the answer I was looking for.

Ready for this? In just one year of PlayStation Plus—all the free games pictured up top—are valued at roughly $1854.86.

That number may seem precise, but I admittedly cheated a little. If I had to hunt down the current price of 64 games, it'd have taken all week. So what I decided would give me the most accurate figure I could get was if I went by the price of each game at its release. That means, retail PS3 titles, unless they were launched at a discount price, are $59.99 a piece. Now I know that there is no way you're going to pay $59.99 for inFamous 2 so long after it released, but seriously, are you going to nitpick that much about this estimated value? Especially when you paid less than the full cost of one retail PS3 game for over $1800 in free games? I didn't think so.

I used the same "price on release date" formula for PS Vita, PSP, and PSN-only titles as well. And if you think about it, there's even more value there since some of these games are cross-buy titles that give you access to both a PS3 and PS Vita version of the game. The Walking Dead was a tough one since it released via PlayStation Plus as episodes, so instead I just wrapped it up for its retail price for the disc version released late last year.

Can't believe Sony gave away that much money's worth of games in just one year of PlayStation Plus? And for only $49.99? Go ahead, check my math.

now the writer overestimated as the retail games weren't full price when they were offered and only the first 2 episodes of TWD were on Plus, but still that's great value

Never understood the hate on the PS3 controller I really like it, while it might feel a little light it does the job really well.

It's too light and flimsy compared to the PS1 and PS2 controllers, let alone the Xbox controllers.

On a related PSN note...Apparently Sony hates anything with the word "Apocalypse" in it. Mainly because I've been trying for days to get my PSN name to be Benpocalypse and Sony simply won't allow it.

After I enter it and click submit it says the following...

The Online ID must contain alphanumeric characters, can include underscores or dashes and must be between 3 and 16 characters in length. The first character must be a letter of the alphabet

Weird...

I can't believe I'm going to be stuck with SuperistSquirrel as my username.

It's part of PS+. They add games every month that you can download for free. If your PS+ subscription ends, you can not play the games until you start your subscription again.

I've honestly went through about 10 PSN names and created 10 different emails. I'm not satisfied with any of them.

I'm so hard to please....

I know what I want to change my name to, but I don't want to create a new account if there is a possibility of them letting us change them in the future.

Lol, that is odd.

Ew, well, don't care much for the sound of that. I kind of thought there may be a hitch somewhere, though, with the deal.

$50 a year for access to 60+ games is a fantastic deal. At least you don't lose access to those games forever if you let your subscription lapse.

It is a good deal, I wasn't saying it wasn't, but if you lose access to it without a PS+ subscription, I consider it a con. A small one, for the value.

It's not a con if it's detailed beforehand. Every time you "purchase" an IGC game a window pops up reminding you that you can not play the game if your subscription ends. IGC is part of the subscription, not a hand out.

it wouldn't be of any benefit for Sony for people to just pay $18 for a bunch of free games when they see something up there they like and then keep them without paying for the service. I think the best comparison is to a rental service like Netflix. You have access to all that movie content as long as you are a subscribe but lose it when you aren't.

Doesn't sound like a con at all. Sounds like an incentive to keep people paying for +, which is how it is supposed to be.

If it's being billed as a rental service, I guess. Otherwise, when I download something, I prefer to keep access to it, regardless of the circumstances under which I downloaded it. Just a con for me, personally. Not bashing this or Sony.

Okay, you caught me, I'm a stealth MS fanboy, trying to burn all Sony goodwill. I'd gotten away with, too, if it wasn't for ThePowerCosmic

I think a yearly subcription is much better since you get new games every month
