I'm thinking of picking up a PS4 in a week or two. Has Gaikai been released yet? That's the only thing stopping me, really.
Gaikai will be used to power PlayStation Now which launches its beta this summer in the US

Okay, so will it be something I download or update later this year? Think I might just pay in full for the PS4 instead of selling the PS3 then.

It'll most likely just be an app you download from the PSN store. At launch it will feature key PS3 games, and you'll have the option to buy/rent titles to stream.

At launch it will just be PS3 games or PS1&2 too?

Which is odd as that's the one most likely to cause problems. I guess the rationale is that if that works then PS2 and PS1 games should've a piece of cake

Btw any word on the VitaTV coming here or will that end up being one of the many cool Japan only PS devices?

Sony is going to have their GDC presentation at 5:45 PDT. Rumors indicate that they're going to announce their VR headset then.

GDC: Sony Dives Into Virtual Reality With Project Morpheus

Sony on Tuesday lifted the curtain on Project Morpheus, a prototype virtual reality headset that works with the company's PlayStation 4 console to present gamers with a fully immersive gaming experience.

Project Morpheus was revealed at the Game Developer Conference here in San Francisco, where Sony will be giving attendees demos of the prototype headset starting on Wednesday.

..................................

"I have long dreamed about VR and the possibilities it brings in regards to game development. This new technology will deliver a sense of presence, where you as the player actually feel like you're inside the game and your emotions feel that much more real," SCE Worldwide Studios president Shu Yoshida said in announcing Project Morpheus.

So here's what we know about Project Morpheus before braving the sure-to-be long lines to take it for a spin at GDC. It's a head-mounted device featuring a 1080p-resolution display with a 90-degree field of view. Built-in sensors, specifically an accelerometer and a gyroscope, combine with the PlayStation Camera to "accurately track head orientation and movement, so as your head rotates, the image of the virtual world rotates intuitively in real-time," Sony said.

The headset works in tandem with Sony's DualShock 4 wireless controller, the PS4's primary controller, and the motion-sensing PlayStation Move wand. In addition to the immersive visuals, the VR headgear also features Sony's new 3D audio technology which "recreates stereoscopic sounds in all directions and changes in real-time depending on your head orientation," the company said.

I'm not really into this VR thing.

I think VR could be as big a deal to gaming as 3D technology was. All of the impressions of the Oculus Rift have been super-positive, and this seems like a very similar thing, only backed by a bigger company. I'm really excited about it and hope it lives up to its promise.

When the hell is Oculus Rift going to be released btw? Seems like it's a permanently in development technology lol.

I don't know if VR is going to be big yet given the resistance to change and additional peripherals (& their costs) still shown by much of the gaming community. Once you have VR something like Kinect and motion technology in general would be awesome. I know I'll be really interested in all this but I'm not sure that gamers as a whole will be..yet at least. And it seems already too splintered with the Rift being on pc and Sony & Microsoft doing their own thing. I think it had most potential if an outsider like those designing Rift made something that would work well on all the platforms with the co-operation of the platform owners.

Interesting but not sure yet,Can't wait to see the video and photos of it in action

I don't know about Rift. I've heard rumblings that the consumer model is pretty close to being finished, but who knows?

VR will definitely be a niche thing, at least at first. If it takes off with the the enthusiast crowd, then it might branch out a little more. With regards to it getting too splintered, I'm not really sure what you mean. I wasn't aware Microsoft had a VR thing in the works, but Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus seem to be largely the same thing. It doesn't seem much different to me than making sure a game works with a Playstation controller as well as an Xbox controller; Two different products from two different companies, using different parts, designed differently, and with some differing functionality, but they're based on the same principles. It's just up to developers to make sure it works on all the different models. Maybe I'm simplifying it too much, but it seems like an apt comparison based on what little we know about these things.

I don't know if that would really do much for an outside observer. It seems like the kind of thing you have to experience for yourself. I don't know how videos, and especially still images could convey virtual reality.

All my of activities under What's New shows my name and Facebook profile pic,I had put my Facebook profile in which was my Zorro one but then I went back to just my gamer pic and it worked,Then the next day I changed my Facebook profile pic to one of myself and now my activities shows that one and my name.

I signed out of Facebook,my profile just shows my gamer photo,I changed my first&last name under my PSN profile info,Checked through other settings and it still shows my real name and FB photo,I changed my privacy setting to where only I can see my own actives.

Seems like it's been in development for a decade! Or maybe I'm just impatient.

Oh right, I think I misread and thought you were saying it would become mainstream. Agreed then. When you said 3D tech I 1st thought you meant 3D like the Arkham Asylum stuff and then reread and thought you meant the 2D to 3D upgrade within games from the PS1 years. I’m very interested myself and hope it gains support. At the last Eurogamer expo there was a demo of a guy (I think general audience member but not 100% sure) using a VR headset combined with motion tech. He was walking side to side forward and back and I can’t remember if he had a controller in his hand or was using hand motions and we could only see the game on the big screen not the VR view. Whatever it was though it seemed very advanced.

I was thinking the multiplatform guys like EA would be on board with developing for one standard VR system like Rift but if each platform has their own proprietary version that requires unique programming and effort I don’t know if they’ll be as likely to bother. I mean I don’t really know how the programming of these works across platforms but it seems historically console-specific peripherals are most often really used to their full extent mainly by exclusive games or specific games made with using the tech as their primary reason for being made (like Kinect games) rather than the multiplat publishers.

Oh and the Microsoft thing I only heard about yesterday for the 1st time actually after the news about Sony doing one. Just found a link:

For one, my big concern is what that will do to a person's eyes and Im surprised more people arent concerned. having a screen that close to your eyes cant be safe. I already wear contacts. I can see one's eyesight deteriorating even more with use of these things

Upcoming PS4 Update to Add SHARE Enhancements and HDCP Off
Here at PlayStation, we listen closely to your comments and requests, which are weighted heavily when looking at the future of our platforms. Since PlayStation 4 launched, we’ve heard a lot of great feedback from you about what you like with the platform and what you’d like to see us work on. I’m happy to report that, as a direct result of your feedback, we’ll soon be bringing some of your most-requested features to PS4 with a system software update in the upcoming weeks. These features and additions will help make your PS4 even more socially connected by further enabling you to customize your most epic gaming moments and granting even more options to show them to your friends.

This upcoming update will add a rich video editor with a simple tool to personalize your video clips, and you’ll also be able to export to and save the videos and screenshots you create by pressing the SHARE button to a USB drive. In addition, this update will add an HDCP off option for capturing gameplay via HDMI, a feature we’ve previously said would come after launch. We recognize that some gamers want to record and share longer clips of their gameplay sessions, and we’re excited to deliver this option with PS4. There’s a lot more coming in this update as well, so stay tuned for more—there will be plenty in the update to excite everyone.

As part of a separate system software update in the future, we have been working with our partners at Twitch and Ustream, and will also be adding the ability for Twitch broadcasts to be archived – another highly requested feature among PS4 fans who are taking advantage of the SHARE button features. These broadcasts will be also provided with a higher resolution of 720p, so PS4 fans can enjoy live broadcasts with clearer images. We’ll have more to come on these updates and more in the coming weeks.

I could give a crap about VR. These things will end up launching for 299.99 and no one will touch them.

I'm not really opposed to thing, just completely apathetic about it. Just don't care, because I'm very happy with my 1080p bigscreen TV. I'm even using gaming headphones, so I'm really comfortable with my gaming setup now.

The update seems like one step closer to allowing us to use USB to view video files

When does octodad arrive? I saw it playing in the shops for a bit but I can't see it in the ps4 store. Is it delayed in australia?
