Interesting. Would you say it is quieter than a PS3 Slim? Fan noise that is, not disc drive noise.

Pretty much everyone says the disc drive is dead quiet.

tbh.....I don't really know........lol.

My PS3 Slim was pretty quiet, too. maybe my PS4 is a tad louder when running games?

I'd have to pay more attention in the future ( to the fan noise ) before I can give an honest assessment.

I do know that both my PS3 and PS4 are quieter than my 360 Elite. Damn that thing is loud.........lol

I will say I don't mind fan noise (unless it's just disconcertingly loud), but a noisy disc drive really annoys me. I never had a problem with my 360 Elite, even though it sounded like a ****ing jet because the noise was constant.

I am told there is no disc drive noise during gameplay though.

yeah....the 360 Elite was loud.

sounding like a jet was my thoughts, too. even with the game volume up you could hear it.

The PS3 and PS4 don't bother me in the noise department. when I'm playing a game with the volume up, I don't notice the noise.

Only time I hear noise on mine is sometimes during stand by mode and am downloading something but other than that not much noise at all,Most of the time I am listening to my music(music unlimited)on full blast on my sound system but whenever I pause everything I never hear a noise at all and when I do during stand by at times it's not that loud and especially not 360 Elite loud

You lucked out, man.

I did some reading, and part of it, at least with the disc drives is that Sony uses three different drives, one of them is apparently inferior, or at least considerably louder.

What is Playstation Now?

Edit: I googled it. Those prices are awful. Not that I have to worry. I kept my PS3, and will continue to own it until it gives out. Then I will find another one and so on. Ive never understood the reason for selling old systems unless you have a serious space issue where you live. I mean, I guess I understand selling the really old systems, but selling a PS3 seems kinda foolish. It has some fantastic games and if you already own those games why sell the system and the games and then turn around and rebuy them for the PS4? Just keep the PS3 and the games and play them whenever you want to at no cost.

A lot of people don't own a PS3 and this is being used as a service to provide access to those games on other platforms. It'll extend to PS4, PS3, Vita and eventually televisions, tablets, PCs.....etc. PS3 games are what this is starting out with but eventually the library will grow to include games from across the PlayStation back catalog, including PS1, PS2, PSP, etc.... games. They have to start small and build from there. Not everyone has owned those systems and it isn't simply for people that did and sold them off. I think you need to look bigger to understand what they are doing and where they plan to go with this.

I can see the potential, and where it could go, but this beta is a racket so far. They've got a very long way to go.

I got kinda bored of my ps3 and don't play much as I used to so I traded it in to get the ps4..which helped me get it for over $100 less but then of course accessories and games helped too.

I'm interested in PS Now for certain games I didn't get a chance to try but wouldn't be streaming much even IF prices improve

The future of gaming is digital my ass.
I think a lot of companies are thinking everything will fall into line digitally eventually like music. But with music the convenience of having everything digitally is so much higher, especially if you don't listen to whole albums at a time and switch artist with every track. If you sit down and listen to 40 songs in one sitting that's 40 times you've saved yourself getting up and switching discs. With games you might not even switch once in a whole session if you happen to play the same game you played yesterday. The advantages are there but nowhere near what they are for music.

If I could get every game digitally I would. I much prefer it, and I've had too many disc drives crap out on me (PS2 and PS3 both needed it repaired).

I'm only going disc for games I know I won't want to keep or play for very long.

Call me old school but I don't see myself giving up on disc anytime soon. I have PS Plus and have yet to even download any of the free games they have offered me

Then you obviously aren't a PC gamer. As soon as MS or Sony create a Steam like system, digital is going to skyrocket in popularity. Its only a matter of time before the gaming industry looks like the music industry in terms of how consumers get their product.

my PS4 has been pretty quiet overall.

don't know if I would classify it as "whisper" quiet.

IDK, I think id call it 'whisper' quiet. Its a really, really quiet system. Both new platforms are super quiet.

He was responding to something about crazy prices for digital rather than that digital won't be popular at the right price. If they don't reduce price below what it costs to buy the physical product I don't think the convenience will win out even with a Steam like system (one of whose key attributes is rock bottom prices and sales) while the majority of the population doesn't have the money to buy as many games as they want. With physical even on a minimal budget they can play pretty much everything they want by buying 2nd hand and reselling or renting. Once they sort out price (and space..although that looks like it's being done) it'll happen, and Microsoft's system is pretty much designed for that from the ground up so they'll have to fall into line soon.

I was going to go all digital and now I'm not but only cause the downloading and especially installing takes forever for me,Took me 6 hours to download UFC and that's ok cause I left my console on standby over night but the f'n game installation took a day and a half with only a very small portion available with just 4 fighters..which felt like just an extended demo.

I bought Injustice:Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition on disc the next day and it took less than a minute to"prepare"or something then I was able to to play the whole game while an update was downloading.

IF they were to make the loading much faster or at least make the games opened up half like let us choose which portions to download and whichever have instant access to..then I'd go full digital!

I would say they are already close to here. Theres a lot more than simply good prices which are acting as a barrier to this happening

Consoles aren't PCs. Now, they are trying to bridge the gap, and I am sure that they will some day. But it doesn't look like it's going to happen any time soon.

If Playstation Now is the future of digital gaming, then god help us all.

Between the prices, and the streaming issues, you're better off just buying a PS3, and getting the games from eBay.

Its truly only a matter of time. Music went digital at an incredibly rapid pace, movies are heading there now, games will follow. Its all but guaranteed. Gamestop, one of the biggest retailers in the industry understands this and have started making moves to ensure their survival in the coming digital age. I mean there will always be that group who will want physical media, but digital is absolutely the future, theres no doubt.

Both Sony and MS have a LONG LONG LONG way to go before they even begin to equal Steam. PS Now is a great example of how far behind Sony is on the digital front(in terms of pricing any way) and MS is even further back(they currently offer little to no discounts on digital games nor do they allow preloading of digital titles). You're right that pricing isn't the only barrier, but its by far the biggest.

I see video games as being a different matter entirely. Their size alone makes it difficult. This streaming service seems like a good way to get around that, but it's going to have some growing pains. And you won't ever own the games you stream.

Digital may be the future, but that future could be well over a decade or more away.

Digital this generation has been one disaster after another. First with the Xbone's unveiling, and now with Playstation Now.

Aside from more consistent competitive prices, what does Steam as a platform have that PSN and XBL don't?

what makes the "Steam" system so special?

The only thing Steam offers over the 2 networks are the pricing, which is a gigantic advantage over PSn or XBL, and a deeper selection than whats currently found on either PSn or XBL, but I guess that can be chalked up to the PC platform. You could also say the layout of Steam makes it easier for users to find and download the games they want, but thats really up to the individual. Steam is just a better overall system, but its pricing is why it so far ahead of PSn and XBL. Its very rare that you could find a cheaper physical copy of a PC game than what Steam offers, with both XBL and PSn, its the other way around. Most of the time the digital is the more expensive option. The horrid pricing structure of PS Now is a great current example.

Yea compared to music there are more hurdles for games, but in the end it won't matter. An all, or almost all digital future will be better for the consumer and they won't fight that long once they understand this. There will be some early adoption issues, but ultimately, digital will win out and it more than likely will happen this generation.

TotalBiscuit had a great discussion on this topic, I'll have to find his video.

I will never go fully digital. I like owning things I pay for and having a phsyical copy of it.

Most people will probably accept, or even embrace digital, but I know there will always be a sizable minority who won't.
