well it's good that most people aren't having issues, but it just sucks (for people like me and thundercrack) to be on the sticky end of things, you know. sony definitely is hurting man, way more than microsoft. they've got deeper pockets so they can afford to give out all these deals. even with the playstation brand doing so well these days, sony is barely making any money. they better pray and hope that their momentum never drops, because honestly, i do not think the xbone is that far behind in sales.

and bro, i don't know why i have to keep repeating this to you but i'm saying only for q4, this holiday season, there aren't that many exclusive options on playstation. and i've also said like 3 times how I love lbp and that i'm gonna get it either way, but the average consumer probably does not see it as a blockbuster playstation franchise. unless however, lbp3 propels it into the best selling entry in the series, which is what iss was for the infamous series. so i don't why you're constantly saying there are options that i don't like.

and i think microsoft's doing well at catch up. they did outsell the ps4 for one week in september in europe. the standalone version of destiny sold better on xbone even though a lot of people probably got it for free. and halo's going to be a system seller, far more than lbp has been.

First, yes Sony as a whole is having struggles, but that's why they have created some structure in their corporation getting ready to sell off some of the weaker aspects. Their TV line will go soon, the more they shrink and focus the better they will do. Regardless their gaming division is doing very well.

Second, MS is hurting too, they are much better off but they just fired 20,000 people a record for MS. Their main bread and butter is Windows and Windows 8 was one of their first massive disasters and really has hurt their company. Unless they turn it around it could get worse. They have Apple (bigger than MS now) and Google circling around them too.

Third...no X1 is not close in sales. That's not even debatable. It's a fact. Right now the PS4 is outselling it 2 to 1. In other words 2/3's of the sales between the two are to PS4.

But there are choices for the consumer. And yes some will like those choices. And clearly the PS4 with out bells and whistles of "bundles" has still outsold the X1. I understand you are saying for the 4th Quarter...I never said otherwise. My point is yes MS has more choices, but Sony does not need the choices as much right now because of the word of mouth and the snowball effect. If they start to get hurt and struggle for sales that's when big deals like this come out.

The reason MS has so many choices is because they are hurting so bad. They are not cutting their console in less than one year 150 dollars because they love you. They are doing it because they can't sell their console and are trying everything to get it sold.

Also between the exclusives of MS and Sony none of them are huge selling, the Halo stuff can be bought (minus the Halo 2 remaster) on the 360, and it's nothing new. It won't be some massive seller like COD. The big games this year are the third party games, AC, COD, FarCry, Dragon's Age. So the exclusives on either side won't help as much as some think.

Wow...they out sold the PS4 for ONE WEEK. Xtreme you seem to just ignore facts and numbers. Sony is still whooping on MS. That is why they are giving all these deals, they need the sales. Now will they eek out in November/December...maybe. But that's about it.

If MS was doing well on catching up Xtreme...they would not have cut the price another 50 bucks. They are hurting if they do that. It's business 101. They are not doing it because they love people and want to spread their kindness around. They are doing that because they are not catching up and hoping this will help.

As for what it will do in the long term we will have to wait and see.

these next 2 months will be crucial for MS, that's for sure.

I have no doubt the PS4 will continue to have strong holiday sales. and most likely, it will continue to outsell the X1.

but the X1 HAS to have a very strong showing. if sales are lackluster even with all the factors going in it's favor, that would be very telling........and very unfortunate.

Wait. Sony is going to stop selling TV's?

Sony makes a quality TV, I'll give them that.

I do think Microsoft has made serious steps towards making serious gains. I think the final sales of this holiday season might surprise people. The PS4 does have a serious advantage, but I think that's starting to wain.

Microsoft got the memo Sony got after the Xbone's launch. Gamers care about games.

If they can keep this up, i.e. implementing **** that people actually want, they will catch up. And of course Halo 5.

No I don't think they have sold off the TV division yet, but they have talked about it. I bet they will. The thing is the Sony thing is not waning. People keep saying stuff like that because it's a dry year. When things like Bloodborne, The Last Guardian, God of War, Uncharted start coming out next year....ya you will see a lot remembering why they went.

The thing is MS does not have even close to the number of in house devs as Sony does, and making games is not over night. It will take years to have a lot of that set in. Sony has had that memo for a long time, even before the PS4. People seem to forget that's what pulled them ahead in the PS3, and they have not forgotten that with the PS4.

People really just seem to forget every single generation of the first dry year of a new launch. People have said the PS4 is waning since Titanfall's release.

MS will definitely do better than they have been, but I laugh if people think Sony is just going to magically hit rock bottom.

MS won't drown or disappear either. I think they may make some strides this month. I don't think it will change the game as much as some think even if they do win the next few months.

they should just kill their mobile/ cell phone development

Apple & Google are bigger now but Microsoft are still one of the world's biggest companies while Sony has shrunk to Nintendo size from being a global titan.

Microsoft's share price has almost doubled over the last 3 years (while Sony's has stagnated) on the back of cloud which has outweighed any failure of Windows 8. And in the office space, companies are still using earlier versions of Windows rather than moving to a new alternative and will likely skip Windows 8 altogether until the next one that they deem worth their while comes along. So if they can keep the market to themselves till then the income will be right back (Windows 10 is looking a lot better). They have lost out on the home consumer market and have been way too slow on mobile and that's what's seen those other 2 companies speed past them.

And these job cuts (and of course I hate whenever they happen) are sensible corporate strategy rather than forced, Microsoft aren't anywhere near bankruptcy. If Sony had wanted to stay as the leading entertainment brand they should have fired and got rid of many of their other traditional but poorly performing divisions decades ago. Instead they have bled year after year and put pressure on the more successful divisions all this time and stopped it from getting anywhere. Thankfully Playstation is doing very well for them.

Momentum is too important. They might catch up in US if everything goes in their favour for a good while and even then it would take years and Halo 5 being a slam dunk. Europe it would take Godzilla, and Japan it would take Godzilla, King Kong, Goku & Chuck Norris to get onside to compete.

Oh yes, they have. And they probably will. That does not take away from their gaming division. And how well it's doing. MS is not near bankruptcy but that does not make their gaming division any better in terms of sales.

Sony will be cutting their TV division and phone division I'm betting in the next year or so. If they focus on smaller things again, they always could rise back up. But still MS has massive competition from Google and Apple.

But again, in this forum we are talking of these gaming divisions. I nowhere said Sony is doing great.

Trust me it was one of my papers I wrote in grad school, on how much Sony has bled in the past 10 years.

But their gaming division is strong, and one thing that may keep going.

should Sony just spinoff the gaming/entertainment division?

should Sony just spinoff the gaming/entertainment division?

I would say possibly. I think if they focused on film/video games, and maybe a few other things it would be for the best. The phone market is too saturated and controlled by Apple, Samsung, and Motorola. The music world is controlled with the Ipod pretty much. The TV world Samsung has done really well with. Sony still rocks with their speakers, I would say maybe keep that.

I think they need to do what Apple did when they were bankrupt (Sony's not there yet) is really slim things down and focus. Gaming is their strongest area, and I think if they purely focused more so on that it would really be good for them.

yeah. it just seems like everything else is dragging the PS4/gaming division down.

No it's not dragging them down at all. They are doing well, it would just help the over all company as a whole. It's gaming division is doing very well, it seems people keep forgetting that around here. That and they are making money off of each PS4 since launch I believe.

But as a whole company ya they have things they need to fix.

yeah. think I worded that wrong.

meant to say, everything else is dragging the company as a whole down, while, as you say, the PS4/gaming division is doing good.

it sucks always hearing about microsoft laying people off, especially all the while when they spend billions of dollars to buy stuff like mojang.

but yeah I'm aware microsoft is making these decisions because they are desperate, not because they care about us but the point is that they're swaying is actually working. when sony was in a similar (and even worse) situation with the Ps3, they didn't do anything at all to try to sway consumers. all they did was cut the price in a year because they HAD to. they were losing exclusives left and right and kutaragi didn't give a flying rat's ass to try and secure any that were left.

and OK, you got me on pretty much everything else.
Sony has shrunk to Nintendo size from being a global titan.
damnnnnnn, really?

sony makes the best tvs. i hope they don't cut that division also.

Sony's TV's have always been good. I might even be getting a Sony for my next one. But that division has cost them tonnes over the years. Their sets have always been relatively expensive compard to their specs and Samsung in particular have been offering very good sets for less. It is finally seeing some positives though and they are expecting 4K to give them a big push. They probably shoulld have gotr rid of it ages ago but now that they've powered & suffered through, they might as well see if the future tech can save them.

yeah. I remember when my family made the switch to hdtvs several years back, price was one of the factors that led us to get Samsung tvs instead of Sony tvs.

Well I said years! And even then only in the US and only if everything goes Microsoft's way over those years and if Halo 5 is a generation defining multiplayer game. I had thought that quite a possibility after the disappontment of Destiny which could have been the one but it looks like CoD might get some of that spotlight. The momentum is still all Sony & PS4 and it's going to take huge efforts to change that and even once changed years till Microsoft can think of catching up on overall units sold, and only in the US.

I know you weren't saying Sony as a whole were doing great. I was just saying that now Microsoft as a whole company are doing well after having been crap for years under the old CEO (Ballmer) who completely conceded the battle for the home consumer and was half a decade behind on smartphones and tablets. Microsoft has pushed ahead through cloud and that is what is making them relevant again and the next Windows should see companies upgrading directly to that and skipping on Window 8 entirely (ie they aren't permanently lost customers). Apple & Google are ahead and strong competition for them, but Samsung is also top competition for Sony. And we both agree that their gaming division particularly since the launch of PS4 is looking like a real bright spot (which is also why activist shareholders of Sony keep wanting to spinoff the more profitable divisions).

yeah. I remember when my family made the switch to hdtvs several years back, price was one of the factors that led us to get Samsung tvs instead of Sony tvs.
I have 4 large Samsungs in my house now. Just great value.

Anyone else suffer from a sound issue since the 2.0 Patch? I get no sound from my Monitor, and the resolutions 720p and up are also unsupported.

their tvs are better than samsung's and a lot of people don't realize it. samsung's pretty much become the new sony.

I didn't quite follow that sorry. You're saying Sony's TVs are better than Samsung's but Samsung are basically the new Sony when it comes to TVs?

I haven't bought a Sony set for a long time but I'm considering it for my 1st 4k (or possibly 4k film projector if I can afford it...probably not right now actually) as they have 4K films downloadable/installable on hard drive already and I want to see if this PS TV thing is good. Samsung have overtaken Sony's position on TV's sure. I'm not sure who makes better TVs overall now but Samsung's have definitely been better value for a fair while.
