Well, Sonic '06 was exceptionally bad. I think that really was a turning point for the brand. Granted, Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) had its share of criticism, but it was a spin off.

Sonic '06 was designed to celebrate and revive the franchise, and it was just a broken game. The mediocre games that followed did nothing to help. Although part of that was because the brains behind Sonic left SEGA during the development of Sonic '06.
critical reception is one thing, but if sales start to slump that's what means the decline of the franchise's survival.

Overexposure, and lack of quality control. I say Mario gets overexposed sometimes, but they don't release a mainline Mario every year. And even the spin offs have a very high degree of quality control.

At one point, Sonic had a major game every year for like five years. Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic and the Secret Rings (2007), Sonic Unleashed (2008), Sonic and the Black Knight (2009), Sonic Colors (2010), and Sonic Generations (2011).

And that's not counting the spin offs like Sonic Riders, and All-Stars Racing, sports games, and handheld titles.

While I didn't realize that about sonic and games ever year for a while.

PlayStation 4 system software update 2.50 will launch tomorrow, March 26, Sony Computer Entertainment announced.
The firmware, first announced earlier this month, brings the long awaited “Suspend & Resume” feature, system backup and restore, custom button mapping, ability to delete zero-percent trophies, Facebook friend search, sub-account upgrades, and other new features to the platform.
Find the full list of new features below.

  • Suspend/Resume* — Supported by nearly all of your PS4 games, you can jump in and out of your games with just the press of the PS button. Quickly switch from Rest Mode to powered-up so you can pick up where you left off.
  • Back-Up and Restore HDD to USB — Back-up and restore your hard disc drive data associated with users on your PS4, including settings, saved data, screenshots and video clips as well as games, patches and download data, to and from an external USB drive.
  • Find and Connect with Friends — “Yukimura” adds to an already robust set of social tools, bringing several updates to continue making PS4 the best place to play with your friends, including:
    • Facebook Friend Finder — Using your linked account, you can expand your network by searching and connecting with your Facebook friends.
    • Improved Friend requests — Friend requests and Real Name requests can be sent together in one step when adding a friend on PS4.
    • Streamlined Party process — The process to create a Party has been streamlined with a reduction in the number of steps required.
    • Find Friends who play your games — Easily view what friends are playing on each game detail page with a real-time “Friends Who Play This” section, which also highlights which friends are currently online and playing it, and if you own the game, allows you to jump directly into the game.
    • Join Friends directly from news feed — A new tile will be added on your What’s New feed where you can see what your friends are currently playing, enabling you to join in the game if you own it.
  • Share Earned Trophies and Optimize Your Trophy List — We know that Trophies are important to many gamers, so we’re bringing more control with how you show them off:
    • Automatic Trophy Screenshots — A screenshot will automatically be captured when a Trophy is earned, preserving the moment to share with friends.
    • SHARE Trophies — Players can share Trophy information to Facebook, Twitter or via Message by pressing the SHARE button.
    • Additional Trophy sorting options — Sort your Trophy list by Earned Date, Not Earned and Grade.
    • Delete 0% Trophies — Remove games from your Trophy list that have zero percent completion.
  • Improved and Expanded Accessibility Options — New options added to customize the user experience include:
    • Customized button assignments for DualShock 4 wireless controller.
    • Zoom for displayed pictures and inverted colors for all system functions, apps and in-game.
    • Text-to-speech for all graphical user interface, including Message and Party.
    • Enlarged text for all graphical user interface, including Message and Party, as well as the system’s browser.
    • Bolder fonts and higher contrast UI for all system applications (but will not apply to games or third-party applications).
  • Remote Play and Share Play — For games that support 60 fps, users will be able to automatically enjoy those games with 60 fps for both Remote Play and Share Play** on supported devices.
  • Automatic Installation for System Software Updates — Enable automatic installation for future system software updates.
  • Sub-Account Upgrade — Enable users 18 years of age or older with sub-accounts to upgrade to a master account directly on PS4, removing restrictions on chat and enabling users to add funds to their Wallet, purchase content and more.
  • Verified Accounts — Select game developers, producers, designers and community managers will be verified with a badge.
  • Dailymotion — Upload video clips directly to Dailymotion via the SHARE button.
PS Vita update 3.50 and PlayStation App update 2.50 will be released alongside PlayStation 4 update 2.50, adding new accessibility options, including enlarged text, increased contrast and more. The update also enables PS Vita to support 60 fps streaming for Remote Play.

Is it true you can use your smartphone as a second screen? Also we can't change our username right? All these updates seem cool.

Oh nice, the update comes tomorrow

I'm sure they're still talking about the username change stuff but it's not happening yet.

And where did you hear about the second screen stuff? I use my phone to turn my system on and as a keyboard for typing messages (I guess that's second screen not sure) but if you're talking about seeing what's on the TV on the phone (like Vita remote play) I haven't heard of that yet.

The back up featur is the most welcomed feature for me. Ive been waiting to upgrade my HDD till they added this

for the backup, I wonder if we can backup the whole game to the external drive or just game saves.

read the notes zenith posted above. Its both
Oh snap, I doubt this will be the case but it'd be cool if I can give a digital game to a friend of mine. But I'm sure they're locked by user accounts.

locked to account and PS4. It should work the same way it does on the PS3. If you try to restore an external backup onto a new system, you will not only need the original account holder on that system, but you'd have to activate it as one of your allotted 2. If you have no problem with that, then its just simpler to do the traditional gamesharing by giving your friend your account info if you trust him (or do it yourself on his system) and let him download the games.

Yeah it makes sense it’d be locked by an account or something.

I only gameshare with one person and that’s my best friend and so it wouldn’t be any issue. We already researched gamesharing on PS4 and it’s a bit different than PS4 and it’s not as simple as PS3. It’s something about making your friend’s PS4 your primary PS4 and vice versa. So everything you buy on your account is available to them and you can play them but one of you has to be offline or something weird like that. I might look for some more info on it since you made it seem as simple as the PS3 version and maybe I overlooked something so we'll see.

ah, yeah. it does say games.

but it seems we won't be able to "run" the game from the external drive like you can on the X1?

Like you said PS app lets you turn on/off your PS4 or as a keyboard typing message using your smartphone. I leave this link here

You can download this on AppStore/Googleplaystore.

Hmm ok yeah I have that app and use it all the time. Thanks for the link

I'm just not sure about seeing second screen stuff on my phone, like my actual PS4 screen. I'll check later tonight then. I've only done that true second screen stuff on my Vita. I think with tablets, there's some kind of option or future option of plugging your PS4 controller into it? Or am I imagining news I heard about? :hehe:

I'm really eager to see how the "enlarged text" improves the browser.

No we won't which is unfortunate but not a surprise

Button mapping is great. Really don't know what that suspend mode is. I'll have to play with that.

Target is selling their PS4 Last of Us Bundle with a $50 off gift card from 3/29-4/4, along with their BOGO 50% off sale on PS, Xbox and PC games.

Like, turn off / unplug?
Hmm no. If you're playing a game and need to take off. You can turn the system off in suspend mode and when you turn it back on, you'll be in the same state, as in the game you were playing didn't close and you pick up right where you left off.

It's better to get a Vita so. Great way to use it as a second screen.
