The Official Punisher by Rick Remender / Punisher MAX thread

The prominence of the Punisher has declined dramatically. That's why he's Marvel's redhead stepchild. He can barely support one ongoing. He can't support a film franchise. And overall, I think that most people are just done with the character because he really isn't all that deep to begin with and then you have people such as Corp and myself who refuse to look up to characters such as the Punisher and Wolverine while idealising non-lethal heroes.

I think most people are done with the the punisher in film.
because of marvel's commitment.

yeah but when you have kurt sutter director and writer of the "shield" and "sons of anarchy" you give him full control of the movie,,
Kurt sutter vs lexi alexander,, wow thats an easy win.

they didn't and it cost them a ton with the story because they never let kurt write punisher script alone "punisher warzone".
lexi was making the villians corny.

I'm just saying 2 great tv shows with a small budget kurt did
and I never seen 1 chessey villain in the shield or sons of anarchy. with punisher being only allowed 21 million budget.

electra Box Office
Budget: $43,000,000 (estimated) got 43 million?? ummmm I don't see her fan-base twice the size as the punisher??Box Office

I do agree marvel doesn't like lethal hero's like ghost-rider, wolverine, and the punisher.

how do have 2 marvel blockbusters films out in the summer of 2007 and not 1 punisher warzone trailer , when the movie was finished in feb of 2007?
Ironman and The hulk (ed norton reboot)

but hey at least they got the trailer out for "Ninja assassin" 1 month before.

sorry marvel dropped the ball.

Looking at "PunisherMAX," the character had been out of the standard Marvel U for so long because Garth was so strongly putting his stamp on a world all its own for the MAX Frank Castle. Now that "Frankencastle" has wrapped up, how have you been approaching the idea of the Punisher in the Marvel Universe versus where MAX is going?
Alonso: "In The Blood" is Rick Remender and [series editor] Sebastian Girner's closing salvo on the Marvel Universe "Punisher," after which series goes to a new editor and creative team. As for "PunisherMAX," now's as good a time as any answer the pressing question we've been hearing from the fans: Where the $%#$ is it!?
"PunisherMAX" resumes in February 2011, with Jason Aaron and Steve Dillon back in full swing. The series has been on hiatus because Steve had a personal crisis to deal with that, along with his work on "Ultimate Avengers," proved to be too much even for the superhumanly prolific Steve Dillon – and we decided it was worth waiting for him. The team's chemistry is too special and "PunisherMAX" is too important a book to our line – we couldn't abide the thought of a fill-in artist. So this February it will be coming back strong. It's unfortunate we had to take that break, but judging from the amount of people out there pining for its return, we're optimistic it will come back strong and ship monthly.

I still think the delay with Punisher Max was a marketing idea to let Remenisher play out as it wasn't doing well. However there will be a new 616 punisher ongoing, I wonder who the creative team will be and the direction? No white gloves and boots please! :yay:

Jim McCann has my nomination. I enjoyed his work on Hawkeye & Mockingbird and since that's pretty much in limbo now he's got nothing to do.

Andy Diggle would be a good choice, cause that guy is a lot better than Shadowland indicates.....

Actually, Marvel loves their lethal heroes like Wolverine and Deadpool. The problem with the Punisher is that he used to be very prominent, but now the character can just barely handle a regular 616 ongoing and a MAX ongoing. It has more to do with while Wolverine and Deadpool are typically mutli-dimensional characters, the Punisher on the other hand, asides from when Garth Ennis handles the character, he's very one-note and generic. It's sad that his DC rip-off counterpart, the Red Hood, has more character within him than the Punisher. Marvel needs to bring in more writers that can deliver characterization on par with Garth Ennis to the Punisher, or else the character is doomed to obscurity forever.

As for the Punisher: War Zone, Marvel didn't drop the ball on it, Lions Gate did. They only made that film so that they could keep the film rights to the character, the same reason that Roger Corman Fantastic Four film was made.

Why would Marvel want to associate themselves with it? It looked terrible, they really weren't going to get a lot of money with it since they didn't make it. And besides, if the film bombed, Lions Gate would just give up on the Punisher and the rights would then revert to them.

In the end Marvel wins with the failure of Punisher: War Zone because now Marvel Studios has the rights to the character, giving them free reign to do what they want with the character.

I'd be interested in Keiron Gillen having a go myself as his Phonogram and Thor was very good. DnA as their Punisher Year One and other Punisher work was excellent. Chuck Dixon would be good too if they gave him another shot. Of course I'd like Ennis back if possible.

Ennis did a LOT of time on Punisher, I don't see him coming back unless it's a one shot or mini.

Gillen is on the X-Men side of things now.

I think Chuck Dixon is DC exclusive isn't he?

DnA would be a good pick now that they're out of the space line but I'd like to see them on bigger stuff.

Yeah most of these are not realistic I admit but I would be interested. I cant see Ennis back for at least another 5 years but one can hope.

Dave Lapham or Ed Brubaker (sp?) would be interesting too as they have both had interesting takes on the character. I have only read Shadowland by Diggle which I have been a little underwhelmed with it TBO but the Losers was meant to be good. Not familiar with McCanns work, what else has he done?

Also what artist would you pick - I think Dillon would be a much better fit for 616 than Max. Id love to see Goran Palov or Fernandez return.

Im curious as to whats going to happen with Max too hopefully sales will be stronger when it returns but didn't Aaron say his Punisher story will be 3/4 arcs long?

Chuck Dixon and DC don't get along now due to Batman R.I.P.

I'd rather see Bendis and Maleev work on the Punisher than Moon Knight. I think that the Punisher would be a great compliment to their work on Daredevil.

Hmm cant really see the appeal for Bendis myself but I wouldn't like him on the Punisher personally. Too much smart talking for my tastes and not enough action though Maleev's art would work. I hope the new team has the Punisher kicking some ass as he certainly hasn't been in the 616 for a loong time.

Ian Edington would be a good choice too I think for writing chores. I'd like to see Hugh Haynes back on the Punisher too I havent heard of anything he has done in years though he was one of my fav Punisher artists back in the day

what happened with RIP?

Lapham would be a great pick for Punisher. His work on DeadpoolMAX do far has been great and he comes from a crime-themed book, Stray Bullets. I was able to read some of Stray Bullets and it was outstanding stuff. I checked his online bibliography and he did a DD/Punisher mini called "Means and Ends". I'll have to find it, it was supposedly collected in trade format.

As far as artists goes, yeah, I love Parlov and Fernandez. But as I've gotten older it's become less about who draws the book and more about who's writing. As long as the art looks decent I'm fine with it. I judge the book by what's not on it's cover.

Yeah I read the Punisher/DD crossover he scribed - while I had a little issue with how the Punisher was portrayed it was good and the final fight with DD was brutal. I havent read any stray bullets but I know it was well received, though his Terror Inc stories were good and his current Crossed series is very dark. Agreed: the writing is the most important element in a book - if it has good art too all the better. I think the style of the art does help to create the mood - which I would prefer someone like Parlov on Max, but I dont mind Dillon as the story is good.

Axel Alonso on the return of PUNISHERMAX

Glad to hear that no only is Max returning, but Frank'll be back in the 616 universe as well. I was worried that after this run with Remender, it would be limbo time. (Not the fun one sadly, though a Punisher limbo contest would be....strangely hilarious) As for the writers, I'm pretty open to who'd go forward with their version of Frank. I want to see him continue to grow (I really hope they keep Henry, I think a supporting cast is a great thing for Frank and having his partner be around the age of a son could make for some great moments if Frank eased up on the poor guy)

Frankly (hah hah) Brubaker would be intersting as well as Aaron. I just don't want us to go back to Fraction's "Evoh rah baddy's raite! I yam ha monstur~"
Frank shouldn't be shaken about what he is just due to a stern talking. It should be a reflection based off of a situation gone bad with a mission (like accidentally recreating the incident that killed his family in a fire fight with thugs would be a contender, but a "too easy" one since Frank is a tactician) Also, please, can we avoid portrayals of Frank as either a psycho (usually the problems of guest writers, not series hangers on) or a complete and utterly cold d-bag to his allies. I know the guy is distant and dead on the inside, but I think if Henry stays, he should pull things back a bit. I don't mean teary eyed hug fests, but a little show of appreciation and respect.

A head nod, sharing of beer as the two of them celebrate a grand mission being complete would be beautiful in my eyes. Now I didn't mean to sound cheesy but I really think the father-son angle could be interesting. Either way, the two of them were quite fun in Deadpool's Suicide Kings.

Anyways, I've shared my feelings of what direction Frank should go in in terms of missions and stories in a previous blog, but basically, I think that he should mix the world or real crime with the fantastic nature of the MU-- A weird, normalcy. Look at the Atlantean Drug Hook in Heroes for hire. That is what I feel Punisher should be involved in. I don't want him completely severed from the fantastical or science fiction aspects of the MU, I think it wouldn't benefit him. I loved how after a while he embraced the weirdness and added it to his arsenal. Procuring villain tech was a brilliant evolution to his tactics. :)

Aaron's run, at the moment, is three arcs long. The third arc, called FRANK, will start in March i guess, if all goes well. I don't know if he's gonna stay on after that, but I hope he does. After the bumbling inconsistency of the first three post-Ennis arcs, it was nice to have a stable writer who understood the character, and it would be nice to see him stick around longer than 3 arcs.

I'm not sure how I feel about Remender's Punisher anymore. His first arc was badass, the second not so much, and I completely ignored Franken-Castle(and hearing that Frank doesn't kill Daken really irked me. Stupid editorial mandates.). Now with "In The Blood", it just seems that Frank is way to cold a human being, and he felt very one-note and uninteresting. And the potential twist with the woman in black leather isn't making me bright eyed with optimism. The two Jigsaws seem cool. But we'll see I guess.

I'm still unsure how the Punisher should be handled in the 616. I enjoy the Spider-Man and Daredevil team-ups. Those are always fun. But it seems to me that, atleast in the older Punisher series, despite being in the 616, his stories were always grounded. And I think he should stay that way. Having him involved with these big events seem like a waste, as he's kind of ineffectual. Snipe Norman Osbourn in the head? Cool! But it wasn't gonna happen, for obvious reasons. Kill Daken? Same thing. I wasn't really fond of sending Frank an army of resurrected Z-List villains just so he could kill them all again, either. But at the same time, Frank using villain-tech was pretty nifty and I'd like to see more of it.

What past Punisher stories has Aaron done?..I can't remember.

apart from the Max ongoing I think the only other Punisher work was a christmas one shot that was excellent. it has a chris Bacello cover too

I thought I would post this here,, if we here more I'll make a thread right now it's just a rumor.

Marvel Studios Bringing Ant-Man, Maybe Punisher to Life
Elizabeth Grunewald | 13 Dec 2010 4:57 pm
Filed under: elizabeth grunewald, kevin feige, marvel, marvel studios, movie, rumors, upcoming

Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, recently gave an interview to the internet, and said a very little about a whole lot.

The L.A. Times recently hosted Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, in an online chat. Users asked him about upcoming and current productions, and while he didn't reveal any big spoilers, Feige did give a heads-up on smaller details and upcoming projects. In terms of in-movie detail, expect to see Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man in a new suit in The Avengers. Feige joshed, "Joss [Whedon, director of The Avengers] would kill me if I gave anything away," but then went on to say the suit would continue to evolve. In Thor, audiences will see what Feige relays as, "the best romantic chemistry in a Marvel movie" between Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth. Apologies there to Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner (Daredevil).

Feige also touched on upcoming projects, but did so very cautiously. He said Edgar Wright's (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) Ant-Man was going to be one of the four films "tak[ing] up the next year of [his] life" (the other three being The Avengers, The Runaways, and Iron Man 3). When asked about the Punisher, Feige confirmed "he's back in the house," but neglected to specify whether he was in the movie room, or the TV room, or just languishing in the basement.

Most disappointing was Feige's passive consent that either Marvel's not developing any female superhero projects, or that they're under real tight wraps. When a fan asked if we'd see any non-Black Widow women under the Marvel banner anytime soon, Feige evaded, "I love female heroes too and would love to bring many more to the big screen in the future."

It's been confirmed a while ago that Disney/Marvel has the rights to the Punisher back and they are developing a cable TV show for the character.

Yeah - hopefully this will materialise into something concrete. The character has the potential to be something excellent on TV but it needs the right treatment. Probably the serial nature of television would suit the Punisher better. Im really interested in the approach that they will take - I think taking the first season to show the characters genesis and only at the end of the first season becoming the Punisher.

Maybe marvel will talk to kurt sutter again and give him control this time.. Make up for the lexi screw up.

Ah a Punisher TV series ! Weekly Frank ! Hbo style , be A dream come true...

Wanted a TV series even more than a movie, be great to do A MAX style series, see the making of Jigsaw, and maybe the Trust and the the MAX run by Ennis in there too....

Maybe it's because Marvel's new website sucks balls, but I can't find ANY info regarding PunisherMAX in the Feb. Solicits. I know Aaron and Axel Alonso said it was gonna be back on track in February, but I can't find it on the website.
