The Official Stupid Question Thread: Marvel Edition

My shop probably has it for like a buck. I'll check next time I go there. '80s and late '70s issues are usually reasonably priced.

The 80's were moderate in terms of crossovers, the big item at that time was the limited series. I must have about 20 of them and I didn't get them all by any means.

The end of the 80's were big with crossovers. Here are the ones I came across for DC and Marvel in the late 80's:

Marvel Comics

Secret Wars: ('84)Not really a crossover; but, it would lead to the next big one.

Secret Wars II: ('85)This was Marvel's first, really big crossover. Sadly, it wasn't that good.

Mutant Massacre: ('86)What became a big Marvel staple, the X-Men yearly major crossover. This was the first, but except for a few exceptions, these mainly stayed within the X-titles.

Fall Of The Mutants: ('88)Another X-Crossover.

Evolutionary Wars: ('88)This began Marvel's new trend for the next few years. Big crossovers within their annuals. At first, these would go in all the annuals of the year; but, by the 90's, we'd get numerous crossover events in various annuals, being limited to 4 different annuals to complete the story.

Atlantis Attacks: ('89)The next big annual crossover.

Inferno: ('89)Another X-Crossover.

Acts Of Vengence: ('89)This began in December of '89, so it just makes the grade. Cool concept, but from people who read it, I have been told it wasn't that good. If I remember right, we did get Cosmic Spidey during this one.

DC Comics

Except for Crisis, I didn't really read any of the DC ones. In the late 80's, I had stopped reading comics, and didn't come back until the early 90's.

Crisis On Infinite Earths: ('85)DC blew Marvel away with this crossover. Say what you will about DC, but this is still one of the best I ever read. Secret Wars feels dated...Crisis is still excellent. I'm still in need of a few of the crossover tie-ins for this one, too.

Legends: ('86)I would love to hear what other people have to say about these next crossovers. I have most of these comics, but have never read them. They mustn't be anywhere as good as Crisis; because you just don't hear them bragged about.

Invasion: ('88)Two events this year. This one is smaller, with only three issues of the main title; but, it did crossover into 17 of DC's other titles.

Millenium: ('88)This one came before Invasion, and was an 8-issue weekly event that crossed over into 22 of DC's regular titles.

I'm so curious about this story. I've read the Spider-Man issues, which gave us Cosmic Spidey... and they were good, and the Uncanny X-Men issues that gave us Asian Psylocke, but I'm curious about the core Avengers portion. The only issue I have is a Captain America issue that had Magneto vs. Red Skull due to Skull's being a Nazi and Magneto's being persecuted during WWII. That was a great issue. I just hope the rest of the stuff was as good.

Acts of Vengeance is one of Marvel's best crossovers, as far as I'm concerned. But I've only read bits and pieces of it as well, since it was kind of an unorthodox crossover consisting primarily of villains simply appearing in other heroes' comics besides their arch-nemeses'.

Also, I hate the annual crossovers. It's a b**** to try and find all the annuals that comprise them. :argh:

Whatever happened to Douglock anyway?
I remember way back when he was wandering around,.. then he dropped off somewhere within the two months of an Alaskan Alpat (Me,.. not the comic) And I never saw him again,..

After reading the latest X-Force, I've got to wonder, how would one go about
reimplanting X-23's claws
?

Whatever happened to Douglock anyway?
I remember way back when he was wandering around,.. then he dropped off somewhere within the two months of an Alaskan Alpat (Me,.. not the comic) And I never saw him again,..

He eventually realized he was fully Warlock, just with Doug's thought patterns or something like that, and became fully Warlock again. He had his own title for a short run (it was actually pretty good) but then vanished for years. He then showed up in the pages of Nova during the Annihilation Conquest event and was involved in the final battle against Ultron. He disappeared again after that for a year or two and just showed up 2 issues ago in the new relaunch of New Mutants, and will be joining the team there.

Is he relatively similar in New Mutants to how he was in Annihilation: Conquest? I loved seeing Warlock again in the latter.

We'll probably see something with Doctor Brudda Voodoo touching on post-Katrina New Orleans in his series since he's based there, but I was wondering if we've ever seen Gambit react to the near-destruction of his hometown.

I can accept JJJameson getting by with the horrendous libel and erroding credibility he gets away with on a daily basis. But how does he escape jail time for things like funding the Spider-Slayers and the Scorpion, who actively endanger public safety?

Well, if what happened in the last issue sticks, it might be a short run for him on the team.

I guess so, just maybe minus a certain part of himself.

So he's dead now? F*** that X-Men bulls***, man. The cosmic office should've kept him. :argh:

I hope he isn't, cause like I said, that seemed like too quick of a return for him. Since he's been used in so much of the promo material for the book, I'm hoping something will save him and keep him around.

For the old folks among us: Were the '80s a crossover-heavy time? I'm not talking necessarily about big events, but just characters appearing in other characters' comics.

Really, are we (who were not born in the 1990s) considered old now? :cwink: I can't recall much the 80s but I do remember a lot of the 90's and I think that, that was more of a time of very robust amount of crossovers, many of which involved Spider-Man. The Round Robin "Side-Kicks Revenge" was one of those, it had Moon Knight, Nova, Night-Thrasher and (a less Rated-R) Punisher. He even made it to the pages of X-Force for some arc? And he fought Magneto while he had the Captain Universe powers. I don't remember this level of guest-starring or title hopping being quite the case with any other MU hero?

Thank you very much,...
hmmmn,... I wonder what the Doug thought patterns "think" about Katherines sacrifice?

I'd be VERY shocked if Warlock were dead. And yeah, he's like he was in Conquest... which is similar to how he used to be back in the day. I also wish he would have stayed in the Cosmic scene as well, along with that other one he raised... I forget his name... that took over a Technarky or whatever that big thing was.

But yeah, he's back. And I highly doubt he's dead right now.

The 70's and 80's..and, yes, even the 90's were filled with those instances. In the 70's and 80's, Marvel really tried to get new comics more interest by having their main stars make appearances in the other comics.

Let's look at three of my favorite comics from the 80's that I had subscriptions to: Dazzler, Rom, and Micronauts.

Dazzler: Issue 1 had most of the Marvel Superheroes in that one: Spidey, X-Men, Iron Man, Thing. then, you see other characters, like Hulk, Power Man and Iron Fist, and Angel, making appearance in later issues. The next bunch of issues had villians which are more famous from other comics: Dr. Doom, The Enchantress, Absorbing Man and Galactus.

Rom: Rom became very big when he had the X-Men show up in 2 issues. His was pretty popular, I think...and, I can't remember how many characters showed up in his comic, but I remember him making an appearance or two in other comics, like Power Man and Iron Fist. Also, Galactus showed up in his comic, too.

Micronauts: I remember Swamp Thing, Nightcrawler...and, then they even had a miniseries where they teamed up with the X-Men.

Plus, during this time, Marvel Team-Up and Marvel Two In One was real popular for me.

90's was huge, like you said. Remember all the UK books? They got popular because they had the big names in Marvel in those books. (Death's Head II) Plus, other comics that were new, like Ghost Rider and Deathlok is filled with those special guest stars.

I loved it. Especially since you got really weird crossovers sometimes. Like Thor, X-Factor, and Power Pack all crossing over in the '80s. Totally random set of comics but still awesome.

Yeah, these days... you get Wolverine and Deadpool... and that's about it :)
