Haha.

I'm enjoying this picture-fest of Joe Manganiello.

All it does is prove how 'meh' he looks for the part.

I was willing to ignore his strange look for the character, but his past typecasted roles and acting are mediocre too.

okay, if the main reason you don't like the guy as Superman, is because he has played a lot of meathead characters, and you believe he actually has the features to play that kind of character well...

... how else do you describe it? How can I put that so that it won't offend you?

I'm not just throwing names around and saying he sucks...
No worries man. You never offended me, I just thought it funny and odd at all the back and forth (not just you) amongst opposing supporters.
I dont get offended :awesome: In my line of work you have to have thick skin, and I do.

Joe Manganiello looks great in a beard, like he looks in True Blood....... but clean shaven??? There is something wrong with this face, he doesn't have that superhero look

Hamm would be perfect for Superman - if this was the 40s or 50s. He's definitely carrying that old school Superman look, but the reality is that Superman fans the world over have been exposed to Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, Dean Cain, Tom Welling, etc for the last few decades - and next to them Hamm just looks too old and sinister.

I'm surprised people keep bringing up Bomer also. Facially, yes he's got a perfect Superman face - but that's it. He's just too short at 5"11 and no matter how many camera angles & heels they use, or how much gymn work he puts in, he is always going to have the stature of a 5"11 person - he just would not be imposing or powerful enough for Superman.

The casting of Thor is showing us (physically at least, as no-one can judge Chris Hemsworth's performance yet) how to go. Asides from his height (6"3), the guy has huge neck and shoulder muscles and just looks like a powerhouse. That's the kind of size and presence they need to be looking for when casting the next Superman, someone who could stand toe to toe with Chris Hemsworth and not look small next to him. Can you imagine Bomer next to him? They'd be yelling Superboy instead of Superman.

Exactly.

Hamm just has a weird build and is more of a throwback Superman from the 40's or 50's instead of a modern one.

Joe M has a beak nose and is just not a good enough actor IMO. I would rather have Alexander Skarsgard from True Blood be considered ahead of Joe M quite honestly.

Give me Hugh Jackman, Jim Caviezel, Josh Duhamel or Alexander Skarsgard as Superman instead.

Plenty of us see it...

Big thumbs up to everything you just said.

And I actually really like the tone of his voice...

I always hope, but every time it even gets mentioned people are like 'not that i'm homophobic... BUT...'

While I do think he has quite a small frame in White Collar, I do think he could bulk up plenty... shall I quote the Bale pics from the Machinist again?

I don't really see why.

A pic was found of him kissing a guy.

He has been asked about it, but given no yes or no answer.

Everyone has kind of made their own minds up now, and they aren't pursuing it.

Nobody in the media is going to have the guts to make a big deal out of Superman being played by a man who's sexuality is in question... it would be horrendously discriminatory... they just wouldn't be allowed.

Seen it, and the game looks great, but if that insanely angry evil looking Superman is what we get i'll be rioting outside of the cinema.

I doubt that had much of an effect.

Though I do remember people going 'Superman's gonna be playing a gay guy' when Zack and Miri came out.

1. He's not openly gay
2. Maybe that's something that seriously needs to be looked at. We're supposed to have equal rights, and we are basically all saying that a gay man doesn't have an equal chance to land a leading role, regardless of his acting talent.

 He was the least believable as a superhero I have ever seen, let alone Batman... there was absolutely no range of emotion in Keaton... just a capacity to look a bit thoughtful.

You thought the depiction of Superman from the DC Online Universe game is evil??

Get outta here with that! :whatever:

I was the one who referenced Fox and Bill O. I agree with everything you just said, but we need to deal with reality here. MANY Americans are homophobic and xenophobic. WB already got a taste of unwanted controversy with the "Routh is gay" rumors and this film doesn't need that. WB won't chance it. It's a sad condemnation of our society that people couldn't accept a gay "actor" acting in the role of a straight man, but it is what it is. So with that being said WB is a studio and a studio is a business and a business needs to play politics to make as much money as possible. They ask themselves how do we not offend anyone with our decisions. Think of it this way; I doubt many homosexuals would boycott the film if a straight man is cast as Supes, but would any very conservative straight people boycott the film if a homosexual was cast? Would a foreigner boycott the film if an American is cast? Would a proud American boycott the film if a foreigner was cast? You see my point it's not worth the risk, and Showtime has flat out said as much. BTW the Fox news thing was just one example. If you've ever had the "privelage" of watching Bill O, or Sean Hannity or whoever on Fox then you know how they talk at their sheep followers. Bill O is known to incite boycotts with his followers, and can you imagine what they would say if "the liberal left wing media at WB has cast a homosexual as America's greatest wholesome hero? WB is also Fox's competition, so there's another motive. That's just one scenario I could see playing out. Again, it's sad that we live in a society that couldn't accept such things, but we do.

Your the one I was referencing with my earlier post below:

I think getting an actor who is shorter than 6'1 to play Superman would be a terrible mistake.

Superman needs to be a tall and an imposing figure.....period.

6'1-6'4 should be the ideal height requirements for any actor being considered for the role of Superman IMO.

Then again, this is the Superman Casting Thread where openly gay actors are being suggested as Superman candidates also. I have nothing against gay actors, but if a gay actor was cast, that would open up Pandoras Box and would create all kinds of crazy criticism, that the next film does not need.

I mean someone on here mentioned how the next Superman who is cast needs to be an American actor, because he was worried about the criticism that would come from evil hack "journalist" Fox News TV and Radio if a Brit or Swede was cast as the Man of Steel. Can you imagine the non sense that would come from Fox News if an openly gay actor was cast as Supes??

Ugh....

That pertains to the character of Superman, not the actor playing him.

"When the Man of Steel flies into theaters next week, he'll have more to worry about than just Kryptonite. After a cover article in gay and lesbian magazine The Advocate questioned the superhero's sexuality, rumors have been swirling that maybe he's not into Lois Lane and could be more of a Jimmy Olsen fan.

Don't you think Singer as a director had anything to do with the article?

It does not matter why or if the media is justified. All that matters is what they will do.

Joe Manganiello has the poerfect size and height the dude is 6'5 but he has too much of an ass hole vibe which is why he was flash Thompson lol

I completely agree that routh should atleast get a audition, i really think tom welling should get a audition as well especially knows christopher reeves wanted him when he was a consultant for the jj abrams superman movie that was scrapped.

agreed about welling, also now welling has interest in playing sups and wearing the suit. i still think he has been approached in some way.

That's exactly why I'm completely against him just from all the damn manips. He just looks like a big buffoon... nothing Supermanly about him at all.

I love this thread. People going on and on about how homosexuality is a disqualifier followed by pages of pictures of shirtless men.

Been a while since I posted. Busy lately.

Just wanted to drop by and say I'm all for giving Joe Mangeniello a serious test screen.

Yeah, he seems to give off a bit of a cocky vibe, but who knows? He is an actor, and there is every chance he could nail it out of the park.

Or should we just cast by manips and prejudiced opinions of actors?

He's a fan of the character, and has been since childhood so thats a few extra points in my book.

He is the right height, the right build, has a good face for it, AND he IS an ACTOR I always figured Superman could look Italian too. :cwink: His nose is just fine.

Mike-

Haha, yeah. He was cast as Flash Thompson for a reason.

Yeah, cuz he's 6'5", built, and can ACT, audtionded for the role, and landed it.

He could easily come of as nice and charming too.

Its acting. :cwink:

Height may be irrelevant to you, but having a large imposing physical stature isn't irrelevant for a role like Superman for many fans. We don't need a short, wimpy Superman with lifts in his heels or camera angles to make him look taller. We need a larger, long torso, muscular actor who fits the look. Physical stature can't be replaced by making someone simply look taller. Short, powerful build and tall, powerful build are two different things and Superman should have a tall, powerful build.

Agreed on all parts. Well said. :yay:

I agree, this thread is more like "How should WB give an audition for the role of Superman"

Is very rarely that a studio has an actor in mind when starting a movie (unless its an original story)

And Joe is promoting him self for the role, that must count for something (landing and audition, not the role)

haven't seen this Mangeniello fellow act, but he has a great look.....if it weren't for his nose. i hate to kick a dead horse, but his nose gives him a sinister look. there's just no getting around it. it's hooked, which is indicative of a villain...not a hero. if they were to get Mangeniello for Bizarro i'd be all for that, but unfortunately for him his nose seriously gives him more of a look of a bad guy.

On video his nose comes off more normal.

Video is different in than photos. In motion it looks a lot less manacing.

If its really an issue, being that we are talking about millions$, he could always get it fixed. That kind of surgery can be done over a weekend.

Not that he even needs it. See at least a few vids of his acting, its a lot less noticable in motion than in photos.

Makeup artists can also do a couple tricks to hide things. Not by slapping on a lot of puddy or anything crazy, rather just a touch of shading here or there, draws the attention away from it.

There there is also the art of camera angles, and yes this is a big deal for EVERY actor.

Any Cinematographer worth his salt is VERY aware of what angles make an actor look best, and which ones to avoid. ALL actors have bad and good angles, and there is an art to filming them to look best for the given role.
