It is a symbol of hope, they have just conquered Zod & crew, and they watch them fly away. The sun rise also symbolizing hope. Superman is holding Lois in the arm, ensuring everything is going to be alright despite Metropolis being in ruins.

Reeve didn't invent Superman, he just acted the heck out of him. I really like the compilation of Superman, but where's Cain? That being said, I like the new costume over the classic "Ma Kent" one. It's more regal, protective, "realistic" for lack of a better word, and does more justice to the muscle mass of the hero.

Yes, I get that's the idea, but the look on their faces and their pose is far more one of pride, and "this is OURS," which completely changes the feeling and scene.
