Days of Future Past The Official X-Men: First Class Box Office Discussion Thread! - Part 1

The promos for First Class here in the states were limited to TV-Spots and pretty much only tv spots. I'm not sure how much Fox spent on promo, but I can't imagine it was all that much.

I'm surprised not more folks are talking about the turnout for Green Lantern. They must have spent much more for marketing cuz I saw their promos for weeks on end.

It's not just box office but having to count how much they had to promote.

I saw pretty next to nil promos for FC.
I laugh at 'Green Lantern's box-office returns because I don't want to see a sequel (especially due to that lame post-credits scene). 'First Class', however, is doing really good in my eyes. This movie will definitely hit 300-350 million dollars worldwide and there will be a sequel because Fox was expecting original 'X-Men' returns from it so that a sequel could do more. People who are talking negatively about 'First Class's box-office returns need to wake up and realize that it isn't the colossal failure that was 'Green Lantern'.

And nonmonetary bonuses: I know it all boils down to money, but DAMMIT, FC made me fall for Fassbender and I tracked back and saw his past work and now looking forward to his future career. And how I was so curious about McAvoy's work in Wanted that I saw it only cuz of FC (I'd seen his other work already). I never have any inkling to buy DVDs of films but when FC 's DVD comes out, I'm definitely buying it.

FOX knows the movie is doing OK, not doing a sequel would just be bad business, "Green Lantern" just proved that a well-know franchise is better than risking things with new superheroes, "Green Lantern" had an amazing director, a bona-fide star, lots of promotion money, better production schedule, IMAX and 3D screenings, and it still underperformed. FOX should announce at least plans for a sequel, if not for the fans, at least just to piss off Warner.

This was the only ad I saw for First Class in NYC:

And I kid you not, it was up for about a week or 2.

NYC was covered head to toe in ads for X3 and Wolverine, much like it's currently covered in GL posters.

Fox took the cheap way out on marketing. All they did was release a bunch of rearranged trailers, rearranged photoshopped posters, no artwork, no giveaways, no Hollywood premiere. They started tv spots like exactly 4 weeks before opening. It seems their marketing schedule was as tight as their production schedule.

In hindsight, perhaps it was a smart move. The less money spent, the more money earned?

I have to agree that it was a smart move, especially if they plan on justifying money for a sequel. Half of the tv spots were on the Fox channel.

And yet, I talked to someone on Thursday who still had no idea Green Lantern opened this weekend.

I suspect those GL ads will be switching over to Harry Potter ads this week.

There was an X3 ad on the subway station on 44th Street for months. I think it was still up there when the DVD came out.

I would have rather they spent less on the marketing and focused on just making a good movie then going all out on the marketing and having the movie flop like what we're seeing with Green Lantern.

If a movie is truly good, it can make up for the bad marketing.

I agree. I was so utterly sick of seeing Green Lantern ads everywhere.

Well, it'll be at 300 million by next weekend. Unless it just STOPS MAKING MONEY after next weekend () I don't see how it won't reach that. . .

I think with the great WOM it's getting, FC will do fantastic on DVD/Blu-Ray & through rentals. Sort of like Batman Begins, it did okay in theaters but did great after it's theatrical run.

Heres hoping ^

How much would you all estimate from DvD sales?

I don't see why it can't reach $200 million internationally. Especially since it's been out for only 3 weeks and it already in that vicinity.

I say another 20 max. 15 more realistic. It needs another 37m to reach 200m. I could be wrong but I don't think it will make that much. Here's hoping though.

If it were to decline every weekend by 50%, that's already an additional $20 million. I don't really know how they calculate weekend totals for foreign countries, but I'm pretty sure this doesn't include weekdays, so there's still a little bit to add there. I think it'll get really close as the weekend holds hopefully get a little bit better. Some foreign countries have large overall multipliers.

There was a huge Green Lantern billboard here in my city...it was torn down before the film even opened, which i thought was a bad omen!
