Well, Iron Man 2 was a mess in my view and Marvel's own Hulk didn't do any better than the Ang Lee/Universal version.

Plus we've had the typical studio politics - a recast Rhodey/War Machine and also a recast Bruce Banner, and all the behind-the-scenes dramas that went with those manoeuvrings...

Iron Man 2 wasn't as bad as Wolverine or X3. X3 was the wrapping up of an entire trilogy. Iron Man 2 was just the second installment of a trilogy. Yeah it was a step down but it was still an alright movie. TIH was also leaps and bounds better than HULK. Marvel really hasn't made a stinker yet so bravo to them. After Thor, they obviously know what they are doing and have a good grasp on their characters and how to make a solid superhero flick.

I do agree that all studios have politics. It's just the business. But I am more confident in the company that made the comics in the first place coming in and demanding a comic movie be made a certain way than a studio like WB, Fox, or Sony whose executives have never read a comic in their life coming in and wanting to do something they think will make more money.

For anyone doubting the atrocities movie studio execs can commit...go back and look in the past 10 years and see which superhero movies were given creative control to their director and which ones were micromanaged by the movie studio execs.

Especially since he has yet to utter a word in any of the footage I've seen so far. That's very strange since in these kinds of films the villain is a big selling point. Even Hector Hammond eventually got a line of dialogue in one of the lastest GL trailers(thought they'd never get to that). Loki talked in the Thor trailers, I'm sure red Skull will get some dialogue in the second Cap trailer(he better:argh:) but not a whisper from Shaw or any of the rest of the Hellfire Club. Very unusual.

My feeling on this is that since they already have Magneto countering Xavier's views, they used him as a villain of sorts in the trailers. Still didn't explain the lack of dialogue from Shaw in the trailers though. But it seems like from the early reviews, he's getting praises for his performance.

Except Matthew Vaughn has creative control so he was calling the shots. The only thing Fox wanted was the movie delivered in time for the release date.

Well hindsight is 20/20 isn't it?

Here's what Devin Faraci (from CHUD) Tweeted about FC:

I loved X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. Best X-MEN movie yet, best superhero movie in years, best Marvel movie since SPIDER-MAN 2.

I hope they drop the old X-MEN movie continuity and just keep going with this one. I really am surprised at how fully I loved this film.

I feel like I only want to tweet about X-MEN all day. Jennifer Lawrence!!!! So good! So beautiful!!!

Seems like he really loves it.

devincf: I want a prequel to THIS prequel, a whole movie of James Bond-esque Magneto wiping out Nazi war criminals. Fassbender is awesome.

I'm amazed because Devin is always SO hard on film..

Yeah, he's not an easy customer to please. He also didn't give a good review for Thor, but I'm surprised that he loves FC this much.

Is Devin still with chud? I used to frequent chud.com and I always enjoyed his articles but the sites now filled with non-sensical generic content. :(

He may have left. I noticed there's a different website listed in his twitter bio.

In my opinion Marvel Studios just likes to play it safe. All there movies carry the same formula and have the same light-hearted tone.

Well, you would certainly expect Marvel to be more concerned about respecting/following their comics closely (though even Marvel makes changes). The danger here is in following source at the expense of making a movie with depth and meaning and wider appeal.

Is slavishly adhering to source the key? X2, The Dark Knight and a lot of other non-superhero films that are well-respected (Children of Men is one that springs to mind) are not like the source material at all. They make drastic changes.

Yea i figured. that's too bad. what's the website on his twitter bio? maybe that site's worth a look.

That's his dig at The Dark Knight! LOL I love this guy!

Just my opinion, I think Marvel has yet to make a film on the level of X2 or TDK.

This X-Men praise literally came right out of left field! This is so hard to believe but my butt will definitely be in a theater seat June 3rd.

I'm curious

"Even better than Spider-Man 2, Iron Man or any Marvel movie so far in my opinion. Ambitious, smart and when it's good, it's very good. Not Nolan level though

What exactly is nolan level? What must a movie do in order to reach that seemingly unreachable goal?

I'm pretty sure this will have better character development, more drama, better pacing and overall be more fun .... not to mention the action will be better than nolan's 3 last movies combined.

So ... what must a movie do in order to be considered better than the dark knight movies?

AJ, from ExtraTV here in the states:

@AJCalloway: About to screen X-MEN First Class. I hope this is good. #ILOVEMYJOB

@AJCalloway: X-MEN FIRST CLASS - EXHILARATING

Nobody said that slavishly adhering to the source material is the key. Quit trying to put words in my mouth and turn around the argument. Secondly, you proved my point in that giving directors creative freedoms and allowing the studios to not micromanage means a good movie. Iron Man changed up a ton of things too and it was a great movie. Favreau was given tons of room to do what he wants and look what happened.

My point with Marvel is that at least they know what they are doing when it comes with script, director, and actor choices as all of that has to go through Marvel Studios for the green stamp. I could really care less that Norton was fired because he wanted more creative control. That doesn't bother me. What bothers me is a terrible movie. I think Marvel stepped in a little too much with Iron Man 2 and the Avengers schtick but they quickly learned their lesson on that one and corrected it while Thor was being written.

Now it seems that Fox has learned their lesson. It took them a while but hopefully the great reviews and a good box office will show them that micromanaging will hurt your bottom line.

Well for my money X2 at best reaches the bottom of Marvel's own efforts(TIH).

TDK? That abomination doesn't exist to me.

I love X2 but I don't think it is as good as TDK, SM2, or IM...imo. Iron Man is a pretty damn good movie and RDJ was fantastic.

Marvel makes good popcorn comic book films. They're fun.

TDK and X2 are just fantastic films in general. My gold standards for this genre.

SM2 hasn't aged well at all. Watching it now, it's a campy mess full of non stop cheese and over acting.

I like how everyone is so surprised that this is probably a great film, just think about everyone involved, between Vaughn and Singer I knew this would most likely be a return to form for this franchise.

I'm stunned that Devin liked it so much. He views Spider-Man 2 as the best of the genre, hands down. To say that this film is on that level (for him)...stunned!

Could First Class overtake my beloved X2? I honestly didn't think it was possible...(even though I knew with the people involved, it'd be better than X-Men, Last Stand, and Wolverine).

...now, I don't know what to expect. I've been wanting a return to grace of the X-Men franchise since X2 and to think that this film might, just might surpass that...my expectations are through the roof now.

Thanks a lot, Devin (sarcasm).

marvel films are good but not anything more than just good films they dont feel challenging in any sense no risks and all their films have the same formula
