Maybe this is where it all started? Carter as stated gave up what amounted to a less than $250,000 investment in a peanut farm. He is a Born Again Christian and his manner in public has never been anything but a hare's breath under saintly... Yet the GOP and it's media allies managed to convince America that Carter was somehow the worst president ever. The party that made some kind of proprietary claim to (Christian) morals, responsibility, familial loyalty etc. told the world a man that lived that life was not to be respected or honored.

If tomorrow a Democrat said opening doors for strangers is a good thing, millions of Right Wing Americans would stop opening doors for strangers as a form of protest. Opening doors for strangers would be labeled political correctness BS that only SJW do. There would be Twitter rants, youtube videos, and Fox News debates about it. That's how insane and stupid America is currently.
