The 'race' issue...

There's literally no one alive who looks more like Goku than Chatwin. It'd be ridiculous to suggest he should be limited to race alone and not similarity, but the 'haterz' are persistant.

There's 2 billion people in Asia. You mean to tell me that there's not one man over there that resembles Goku???????????????????????????

That's one of the dumbest things I've ever read on this site.

we disagree on a lot of things but i can totally agree with you about Jon Foo. aside from his nose, he's pretty much what i expected Goku to look like and he has the martial arts savvy to back it up. i'm sure his acting is rusty, but considering Chatwin isn't that great of an actor himself...i would've gladly accepted Jon Foo as Goku. he gives off more of a Goku vibe than Chatwin probably will in the movie.

here's a demo reel of his work for anyone who's curious.

foreal though, i wish the labeling would stop. not everyone here that doesn't like the direction of this movie is a hater. many of us have valid reasons and concerns.

It's just a movie though. It's not life or death. But apparently it is to some of you who go on complaining until the final release and then continue complaining afterwards. I'm getting too old for this ****.

casting Goku white was destined, they knew he would be white the moment they brought the rights, making him white is a brilliant idea, bringing a white-alien into a Asian influenced society given a Asian name shows how different he is from everyone, unfortunately they messed that with the Americanized high school setting

Casting Goku white was ******ed. He was obviously meant to be or look Asian.

yes.....we're all on life support because of this movie. :whatever:

look, it's simple....if people are allowed to react positively to what they see coming from this movie without being labeled or ridiculed then the people who react negatively should be treated with the same respect so long as they give valid reasons and arguments.

I'm getting too old for this ****.
really??? the way you're acting, i'd say your username is pretty appropriate for now.

it's not ******ed or ingenious, it's simply a matter of marketing. it's pretty obvious that if you're marketing towards an American audience and you want to maximize your profit then you'd be better off with either a black or white actor and everyone knows that Goku's not dark skinned.

imo, "ingenious" would be casting a qualified actor who is ethnically ambiguous.

I'm just at a loss for figuring out why you've been at this so long even though the movie's done and in the can. Yeah I'm fed up and am acting out. My apologies. You're not a bad guy... Carry on. I'm out...

good on ya mate.

just because this particular movie is done and in the can doesn't mean we, fans, can't influence future movies. i do this because i care about what people think about dragon ball and i wanted this movie to be greater than what it's turning out to be. i want people to strive to do more than just accept the exploitation of their favorite series.

If this movie was made in Japan then it would make sense to make Goku asian but since it is made in America and Goku looks white (to me) in the manga/anime I dont have any problem with him being white

He has a great look for Gohan but then again so does Chatwin

Yeah, I actually agree. Both Jon Foo and Justin Chatwin look like anime characters come to life. I'd probably be more irritated with the casting of Chatwin if he didn't look eerily like Goku in the flesh.

*ahem*

Jon Foo is a great martial artist, I think he would have been a better choice for Goku, I wouldn't even mind seeing him as Vegeta. I recently watched The Invisible, I didn't find Justin Chatwin's acting bad, with that being said, things may work out with him as Goku.

I read on the front page (thread??? is that what that **** is where people yell FIRST!!!! for some reason?) people complaining about too many white people, and goku is white...

i mean, to me, Goku could be any earth race really. he is an alien. a sayan. so it could be portrayed by any race on earth. to me, white is the best choice for goku, compared to the show. i mean its obvious in the show that Chi Chi is supposed to be more asian ( i say more asian because its not blatant, but is insinuated bc of her hair). now i know this is an iffy tight rope im walking on here... but whats the deal? what do you think about the race issue...should goku be asian? should the movie have more asians than whites?

IMO, i think they got the casting right on, race wise. bc goku could be any race, and these days 'white' is 'generic' so to speak.

i dont feel the casting is, in any way, a injustice, or a problem. but apparently other people think so....Im not hating on those people, just wanna know what the real deal/scoop is...

Ok before I give my opinion on this subject I would like to know your opinion on a few movies from the past and how you though they were cast

1. Spawn

2. Daredevil

3. Wild Wild West

4. Men in Black

Just a few questions

To expand on this so people would understand and those have not read or seen the original.

1. Spawn: Terry Fitzgerald in the comics is African-American but in the film, he is played by a white dude D. B. Sweeney

2. Daredevil: Kingpin in the movie was played by an African-American actor Michael Clarke Duncan but in the comics is seen is a bald white dude.

3. Wild Wild West: in the Original show, Jim West was played by a white dude but the update movie he is played by Will Smith. This was very controversial cause the disapproval from the original Jim West and the creator of the show.

4. Men in Black: In the comics, Jay, Will Smith's character was a blond dude.

goku looks more asian than white to me. black spiky hair, martial arts gi, eats noodles with chopstick like a pro. he just seems asian to me.

That was the point I was making. I just want to keep this as a debate, and not turn it into an arguement like a lot of threads on this subject turn into.

But yes there was a lot of stink raised because of Daredevil , MiB and Wild Wld west.

And to this day most people dont see Isisah Bradley as the first Captain America.

IMO, Chatwin is an ok actor, but it would have been much better to have Foo, he is already skilled in martial arts, a few of the movies that he has been in were movies done overseas, so this could have been his big break. He somewhat unknown here, but who knows, maybe Tekken will make him a little more well known

Hmm there is a movie called Ninja Assassin which was suppose to comeout next year but now is nowhere to be seen. What happened? Seems like the asian guy they casted is doing a lot of voice over since he might have sucked a lot initially.

I haven't really been able to look at Goku's character as being "Asian" ever since someone suggested to me that he's supposed to be a racist caricature of Caucasians. It's probably not true, but still it did somewhat color my thinking (no pun intended).

wow...whoever that someone is couldn't have been more wrong.

well what does a westerner normally look like in anime?

the closest thing person i can think of who was definitely white in dragonball z was the ring announcer...

They weren't referring to Goku's appearance when they said he was a racist caricature, but more specifically his character. He's big, not very bright, has a huge appetite, is foreign (from another planet), comes from a conquistador culture, and lastly-- and this one is probably the most controversial-- he is "half ape." Like I said, I don't think that it's true, but it definitely seemed odd to me.

Goku is based on The Monkey King charcter from the 16th century chinese Journey To The West book which its self was inspired by ancient chinese folklore and mythology.
