I don't even understand his complaint since this is about RE1 one anyway. Does he want the original PS1 edition or some ****? I really don't know.

I never understood why they made RE0, instead of giving RE2 the REmake treatment.

RE0 was probably the cheaper of the two options. It was, I'm guessing, made on a tighter budget and not from the main team (if you believe rumors, it existed purely to satisfy a contract stipulation with Nintendo so they could have more freedom with RE4).

Plus, while many people assumed it, there was never any official plans, as far as to my knowledge, to remake the entire catalouge of existed RE titles. I think the idea was always to present the beginning of the series in the best way while still making the rest of the games available via cheaper ports. I seem to also recall that Mikami said it was a passion project for him to redo RE1 again for whatever reason, and the deal with Nintendo allowed him to realize it. RE2 was also done by a different director.

there were plans for a prequel game before RE1 even came out. The original idea was to put it make it a cartridge game and put it on the N64 bc the partner zapping system relied on no load times, which they couldn't do with the PS. Development for it stalled for years and they eventually put it out on the GC

There's some videos of the N64 version up on YT like this one

Yeah, I actually wikied it right after I replied to see what there was. Did not know how long of a development cycle it actually had:

While the original Resident Evil was still in development, the idea for a prequel came up shortly after the 64DD disk drive peripheral was announced in 1995. The 64DD's low sales four years later eventually made Capcom decide to develop Resident Evil Zero as a cartridge-based Nintendo 64 release. The real-time "partner zapping" system was designed to take advantage of the console's unique features and strengths, namely the lack of load times necessary for optical disc (non-cartridge) based gameplay encountered with the PlayStation.[2]
After the script had been completed in early 1999, the production of a Resident Evil title for Nintendo 64 was revealed to the public by Yoshiki Okamoto, the president of Capcom's screenplay company Flagship.[3] Resident Evil Zero was officially announced at 20 percent completion in January 2000, after which it was presented with a playable demo at Tokyo Game Show.[4]
The game was expected to release in July 2000 and reportedly had an atmosphere close to the first Resident Evil.[5][6] However, development began to slow down when it became apparent that the data for Resident Evil Zero would not fit on a single cartridge.[7] Production then shifted to the newly announced GameCube, with the concept and story carried over but all of the data recreated.[7] The platform change was confirmed in September 2000.[8] The game's final version was developed by Capcom Production Studio 3 with support from outside company Tose.[9][10] As a result of the transition to the GameCube, it was delayed so that the environments could be upgraded visually.[2] Scenario writer Noboru Sugimura was called back to make some changes to the story.[11] The character designs were also adjusted: Rebecca for example lost her beret and shoulder pads while Billy received a new hairstyle.[12] The GameCube's use of optical discs reintroduced load times, so the programmers had to use sophisticated programming to make the "partner zapping" system work.[2] Capcom announced its intention to release a game demo in Japan around August 2002.[13]

Looking good.

Wow, it just hit me that this is a port of a Nintendo game and they aren't putting it on the WiiU

Yep. My guess is that whatever contract Nitnendo had holding the game expired. You can maybe assume there never was one, but I think they would've released this alongside Code Veronica and RE4 when they got digital HD releases if they had no restrictions.

I am just saying it would make more sense to just do 0 - 3 entirely then just 1. I imagine a lot of people would buy a next gen HD Port collection of all of the original games then just 1

To be clear, this a HD port of REMake for the GCN, not the PS1 original. HD ports of the original 1-3 aren't possible, from my understanding, and neither RE2 or RE3 were remade in the same way as RE1. Zero is the only other candidate for this kind of HD remaster treatment. 2 & 3 would basically have to be remade completely, and there's no way that's happening without being released as standalone packages for full prices. Way too costly an endeavor just to throw into a HD collection. Most remasters are just cheap and dirty ports with minimal effort.

EDIT: And worth keeping in mind that this is a digital-only release as well. Only the PS3 version will get a physical release in JP, so there's not really a collection possibility in that sense.

I just hope it will do well enough, so Capcom considers going back to basics.

Being realistic, I would be pretty stunned if this game pulls even half of the nearly 7 million that RE6 sold. It's big selling point is the novelty of coming from a Nintendo-only past for a lot of people, which will maybe push it to do more than the usual HD remaster, but I wouldn't expect more than that.

I want it to do well, too, but because it's a good game. I have no illusions that it'll have any impact on Capcom's direction of the RE franchise and see it for what it is: a cheap port, but I'm glad more people will get to experience it.

Being digital only in the western market, we likely won't even get sales numbers to compare

I'm interested in seeing how they price it. It should be about $15 but I can live with $20. Definetly no more than $30

How much were the RE4 and CV HD releases? I would hope about the same, but I could see a $5 bump up due it's novelty and all.

If popular enough, it might just give Capcom the incentive to make future instalments more like the past.

REmember how devastated they were that it didn't as well as they hoped and things became RE4, because of it?

Hopefully it'll give them food for thought if popular.

lets hope it has some new features and not just an graphical upgrade

also i'll be that fan where the hell is the res evil 2 remake, and the ff7 one

jesus both capcom and squire have been on a finical downturn for years and both of these games are just printing money

Lol, if it manages to surpass 7 million copies, maybe.

New features are a widescreen option and a new control option that makes character movement smoother.

damn i was hoping for some new modes or costumes or anything. guess this another wait till ps+ or price drop

No Wii U release kinda pisses me off. My 360 is on the fritz and I don't have any of the other consoles. This was a Nintendo game to begin with, why not do a Wii U release. It's not like it'd be the only RE game on the Wii U.

I vote the should do a remake of all the resident evil from playstation 1 and let the graphics and game mechanic be like this game.

I noticed that as well. A port of a Nintendo game comes out on every platform but Nintendo's current home console. Odd, but not too surprising considering the lack of support 3rd parties have with the WiiU

OH MY GOOOOOOOOOD!!!!!!!!

This is INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!

Holy hell I can't breath. I can't breath. OMG OMG OMG. Thank you baby Jesus!

REmake on my new consoles!!!!
